I think this goes here because using a company name is a way to help distribute games (like if people like a game, they might look at other games from that company)...
How do people come up with names for their game "companies"? I want to tag my games with a company name, but I can't think of anything. Where do people get their ideas from?

From a group of friends all happening to find that they like the same object and mental images. In my team's case, it was wolves and a shadow of one silhouetted against the sky. Yup. So, we got NightWolf Gaming. Name has stuck since sixth grade, which is like six years.
With some of my more private projects, I use my initials, or I seriously go: "A creation by Joshua N Boren."
Expand. If it sounds lame, then it has a chance of being cool.
Seriously, what kind of name is EA or Blizzard?

The best thing to do is make a name, then google it and search the web...if no one has it, then you can use it for yourself, otherwise pick a different name. These companies that people have mentioned aren't really companies at all but rather they "said" it was....making a real company requires trademarking the name and symbol, in order to that, you cannot have the same as another real company (hence the searching you should do). If you don't get the trademarking, then if it's a good name, you may lose it to someone who does....and if you accidentally front a true company, you might get into legal trouble.
If you don't get it trademarked, I suggest you just pick something random and garbage (that you are willing to throw away)...wait until you have a real company trademarked and then just re-sign all your games under it.

Coming up with a good game "company" name is hard.
I made few games together with a friend of mine, and we made up the "company" name with our name initials + "games". So we got "PC Games". Now it seems kind of a lame idea.
I've had many others in my mind too, but they failed even more.

Actually, you can found a company here and now (at least in the UK) and you don't even have to tell anyone to make it official. Of course, unless you trademark it you could lose the name to somebody else, but trademarking isn't actually a legal requirement to call something a company.
I think it's pretty pointless having a company unless you're commercial, though, so in my current game I'm just calling the people working on it the Feudal Dev Team. (Feudal being the name of the game in question)
If you do want a company name, try and think of something catchy, and preferably relevant. But catchy takes priority.

I plan on just using my name, and it will become a brand similar to as if it were from a company (Though, I am making programs, not games.)
If worse comes to worse, just use your name, then add Games or something to the end. You'll get props for being an indie developer.

My company name "Chees-E Ink." was completely a pun. Originally I planned to make not-so-serious media, which is why I used a name suggesting that the work was cheesy and the "Ink." part is a pun of "inc." (the originaly logo had a spilled ink jar)

If you're really interested in company and product names in terms of branding, do a marketing course. There's a lot of research done on branding and it's pretty interesting.
If you just want to come up with a name, just ask your friends, give it some time, think of something personal or in relation to the type of games you're creating. Though if you can't even come up with a name for your company, I don't understand how your company could be successful, seeing as creativity is one of the cornerstones of game development.
Also, realize it's not actually a company, you're probably referring to trying to find a name for your game development team, which can consist of just you yourself.

There are lot's of ways to come up with good company names.
Just thinking of random words and adding STUDIOS, GAMES, PRODUCTIONS, or SOFTWARE after the word.
Virus Productions
Mayhem Games
Fat Lady Singing Studios
All of those I came up with within 4 or 5 minutes.

ByteAlity Productions is a name I thought of years before I even knew Game Maker, as soon as I started making stuff in BASIC I wanted to give it a name and ByteAlity was the first I came up with. It's supposed to be a portmanteau of "byte", standing for the fact that it's about digital stuff, and "vitality" meaning that it's somehow good (

). Productions is chosen because it's broader than just games. The problem with the name is that it's quitre easy to pronounce the wrong way, but it should really be pronounced like "byte" + "ality". Well, surely it's not a name already in use.

Make it easy to remember, unique to avoid confusion and getting top-spots in search engines. Something that will work with your, work.
For example, look at id's name, I'm pretty sure it suites there common-style of games. Raven Software, a dark name to for someone who generally makes dark-ish but graphically awesome games.
Epic Games, because there games are epic

My "company" name is Instant Arts. Because, I thought of it was I was 10 (almost 6 years ago) and went with it. It's instant and it's really good

Writing down a list is always good, then reading over it, combining names is always fun.

been thinking of a name for 2 years, can't find any good ones.
For me, a name has to be 6 things:
Original
Meaningful
Catchy
Something that would make people excited about the product
Not anything with a inappropriate double meaning.
Flexible, eg "Bloodbath games" or "Rainbow software" would not work, even if we planned on making gory games.

Plasmide Games"
At first it was "Plasmzorg Games" as a joke but then we changed it to something bit more serious

Also, i got an idea of a really cool logo with all kinds of plasma types of swirls and things, so we took that as our team name. Also it wasnt already taken so it was really good.
We are releasing our first commercial game early next year

My company name is 'orange08 games'
Here's how it happened:
When I joined this forum I named myself orange08 because I liked oranges and it was the year 2008.
Then I saw how other people made themselves out to be companies by naming themselves things like Daman productions or Blachrat studios.
So I named my company 'orange08 games'

I was going to leave this topic alone but the more member/company names I see around here the harder it is to ignore..
-please, FOR THE SAKE OF FLYING MONKEYS look up your name in the urban dictionary just to make sure it isn't a racial slur (I have seen on here) or slang for some body part (yep seen that too)
-If you are going for a totally epic sounding name please please don't make it rhyme with butt or farts (seen that too)
-Be careful if you share your name with a song or movie or something. At least make sure it doesn't conjure up bad Celine Dion lyrics or corny acting.
