Dimension Text is a simple extension which allows you to draw text with effects that make the text seem slightly higher or lower than its background. Its fast, simple and effective. I won't go into detail, because its pretty straightforward. Both downloads have a relevant help file and a commented .gmk. Here's an example of what it can do (not including shadow effects):
