The Story so Far:

There was once a time of peace when the crystal of life protected all living things from the shadows. But one day, that all changed. The crystal of life shattered, sending its shards across the world. The downfall of the neum race had begun.

Neums now faced powers they had never confronted such as natural disasters and monsters. In the midst of the confusion, some neums turned against the others. These rebel neums were called Devil Neums for their devilish like wings. Now under the command of Yggarous, the devil neums conquered town after town of neums.

The hero belonged to one of these towns, and after seeing his people die he decided to avenge his people by defeating Yggarous. The hero endured a perilous journey in order to reach Yggarous and his army. When he did, he single-handedly defeated the Devil neum army and its greatest warrior "Fel".

The story of Aftermath starts as the hero fights Yggarous.

THE KAPPTIN
I really like the graphics in the intro, when the guy is talking to you.
The first intro text scrolls too slow.
Your walking-down-slopes doesn't work when going left, e.g. that rock to the left of you when you start the game (you can't walk off it).
The wraith is pretty bs. It's basically eyestrain in boss form. I think one of the versions of him is the "real" one and the others are fakes? I couldn't see any visual difference though. Also, the yellow shots are a huge pain to see against the yellow background.
I don't get what the yellow gates want. It says "30" on it, but I don't have 30 of anything even though I can open it. I think it's the yellow orbs. If so, you might want to give the player a number of yellow orbs that they've collected so far.

In terms of design: I know you just want to make "this type of game" but you could try to innovate, or at least to make the powers interesting. The first to powers (the ability to duck and the ability to push brown blocks) are really boring, and the really amount to "the ability to go to the next area". So it's really just like a linear game, except you can also run around randomly (and get lost!) if you so choose.

I got to the green spider boss. This game is alright, it has some cool things (like the ribcage passageway that appears as you walk into it) but generally it's just not interesting enough for me to want to play it through.
The sticky controls also hurt its playability a lot for me. It's extremely important to fix that, if nothing else.

Sticky controls:
-Can't walk to the left down sloped surfaces.
-Your guy stops when you enter a new room and you have to let go and re-press the left/right movement key (especially annoying for jumping up to a room above).
-Sometimes it just seems kinda sticky, when you're jumping and trying to change directions in midair, especially more than once.
I suspect you used a system where you check when the key is pressed and released. If so, you might want to consider switching to a system that checks each step whether the key is down.

Thank you very much happy.gif theres alot of things here that can change for the next version (Especially the system that checks each step whether a key is down.)

I cannot get past the spider boss because of STICKY KEYS!

The Nuem does not stop even after I let go of the key!

Here's the review I posted Here and Here:

Crystal Universe: Aftermath Review by Arkatox, who is also known as MakutaZarnax

Okay, I just gotta say this. . . .

Pros: Really fun, great puzzles, graphics are pretty cool (except for the neum sprites), and interesting story. just a really great game.

Cons: The game gets hard pretty fast, and the neum sprites could've been alot better (only he couldn't help that, because he wanted to use the same type of creatures that he used in the first game). Also there are alot of glitches.

Gameplay: [7/10] A little annoying at first, but you'll catch on quick.

Story: [7/10] I didn't really like how everywhere you went everyone was dead, especially when you finally caught up to where the refugees were supposed to be, and you find out that a creature that you could beat in just a few tries had killed everyone. But, overall, it has a pretty good story.

Graphics: [8/10] The graphics actually were pretty good, except for the neum sprites.

Sound: [9/10] Oh man I love the music! The music is some of the best in-game music I've ever seen in Indie Games!

Overview: Crystal Universe: Aftermath takes place (I believe) a few years after the first game (which isn't very good at all). You are a Neum named Seth, and you start going out on this adventure (assigned to you by some mysterious being) to stop the evil guy from the first game (I don't remember his name, but I know it started with a Y, and had 2 Gs in it). All of the sudden, when you get back to your town, you find the town destroyed, and dying Neums everywhere. You find out that some evil creature with superimortal powers (that's so powerful that it could destroy a town in just a minute or so) came and brought it's wrath. You think it's the evil guy from the first game, so you continue your journey. But, soon enough, you find out that the creature is something totally differant (man it's WAY too intelligent!). Everywhere you go, you find dead neums and places destroyed by this evil creature. You're the only hope for the universe!

Overall Score: I'd say an 8/10.

Now there's my review! Hope you like it!

I'm glad that you actually understood the storyline and that you liked the game xD. Also you say you beat the creature that killed the town in a few tries (SPOILERS: aka last boss, Lycron; the giant blue flying monster). Thank god, I was starting to think it was too hard xD

If your bored you might want to check out all the secrets as well, like the old tomb hidden in the temple or the tower of trials above the temple entrance.

It actually was very hard, but I still beat it after like 10 tries. You could edit to make it easier, because almost before it was halfway beat, it started using like impossible attacks.

What I ended up doing near the end, was just staying at the bottom of the stage dodging (and regaining health. I suggest getting the regain health ability before fighting him), and only attacking him when he was near me.

I actually found both of those . . .

I also accidently made the mistake of telling my brother (who hates spoilers) how to get the skeleton key.

I'm currently at the cave right past the tree.
JMchaos
Ah, your supposed to get the health regen first. Either way I'll be making the bosses easier for next version also changing the health regeneration position to somewhere easier to find.

Be careful with the spikers in the cave they are kind of bugged and end up damaging you every time you damage them.
Arkatox
I went to the tomb (that's in the temple) way too early!

I could beat most of it, but the Undead King killed me within like half a minute!

So, of course, I moved on in the storyline to save that boss for later.

After I beat the tree, I went back to the temple that's in the middle of the firey place, and the statues came alive! I couldn't even get to the save point in that place! I'm assuming that because the statues move now, I can now hurt the boss at the end of that area.

Hey, I probably shouldn't get much further, 'cause I'll probably need to restart the game when the new version comes out.
JMchaos
UPDATES(1.09):
-The bugged enemies arent bugged anymore
-The statues in the Forbidden Tomb wont always turn to monsters
-The endurance at the end of the tower now has 10 waves instead of 15
-The Sand Wraith is no longer so much of an eye strain, neither is the Spider

Bosses that are easier::
-Gzemnid(Flying eye boss)
-Undead King
-Great Mother
-Sand Wraith
Arkatox
I forgot to tell you: I got to the Fire/Ice boss, and after about 5 (or more) tries, I got to the combined stage.

I actually got there with like 5 health left.

I really think you need to make them easier also.
JMchaos
You should really get more upgrades then =P. If I make them easier it wont be much.

Either way, the walkthrough is almost done happy.gif It should help.
Arkatox
I've got all of the upgrades that I could find!

And I can't beat the Tower of Trials, because I can't figure out what to do.

I can't beat the Undead King (well I might be able to in the new version).

I can't beat that boss that's beyond all of the statues that awaken, because I can't even get to that boss anymore.

I've got pretty much as far as I can go in the Duel Arena.

Man, there's nothing to do but move on--- straight into Fire and Ice!

Okay, I'll download the new version.

Did you fix the saving-taking-too-long thing?

EDIT: Ooh, Page 2!

EDIT2: Please sometime release a soundtrack, because the music is simply awesome!
dcco
A la question - Where is version 1.09. The download link gives me 1.06, and the saving is taking AGES. At this point, I could probably do laps outside waiting for it to finish saving.... I refuse to play until this is fixed, because.... I like saving.
(I had to fight Gzemnid twice)

Also, the fire-ice boss wasn't that hard. None of the bosses really were, you just had to focus on how to kill them fast and how to lose minimum health.

The sticky controls and long saving are my two major complaints. One other thing I hate is that some of the bosses are IMPOSSIBLE to defeat without getting hurt, the patterns simply come randomly. One particular example is when Magmite shoots out fire that comes at you with WAY too much fire, trying to hurt the damned fire and ice thing during the third part of the battle (you cant dodge that much. no.) Certain combinations of attacks with Gzemnid.... etc. As the person who played through AUS on Insanity, I don't appreciate games that do this. Same goes for the minefields - I find it easier to bash straight through them, because flying through them has such horrible controls, I can't be bothered.

Other than that, I really like this game, it has a wide variety of bosses, and despite how quickly I fight them, there aren't many.

THe levels are WAY easier than the bosses, except for certain annoying switch puzzles. Ducking is EXTREMELY Gimmicky, and so is crate pushing.

New Update!
Rainsong
Played through most of it. Pretty good, especially seeing as the only real flaws are bugs.

Graphics: 4/5. Minimalist, original, effective. Need I say more?
Sound: 3.5/5. Music is good, midis are not. ;p
Gameplay: 3.5/5. 4.5/5 if all bugs get fixed. Interesting difficulty curve you have there. Goes from easy as pie to 'HOLY CRAP!' in a very gradual, balanced manner. Controls still stick on occasion, particularly when changing rooms, though. Having bugs that force a restart aren't particularly nice, either...
Controls/dynamics: 2.5/5. You're making me whip out my wacom just to save?! Having hotkeys, control changes or something similar for the save points couldn't hurt. Why make the user switch to the mouse when just pressing 'S' or even 'down' at a savepoint could suffice. Spell system isn't bad, but the numbers feel ever so awkward. Other controls work as needed.

As a little help, some things that need fixing.
-The save function. 30+ seconds by the time you enter the crystal... and that's HALF the time it used to be?! There is no excuse. If you havn't already written a custom function/script for this -- one that counts ONLY the important variables -- do it. Its tedious, yes, but will save you LOTS of griping from players.
-The floaty statue things. And certain smashable blocks. The former would force a restart if they didn't kill you... but then I already sent details on both.
-The ducking glitches. But those are funny more than harmful. ;p

dcco
Suffice it to say that downloading the update fudged up my game? I can no longer double jump or press the 1, 2, 3 buttons at all. I'm sure this isn't your fault or whatever though. Maybe outdated save.

Having said that, from what I HAVE played of the game

Does it Work - 8/10 - I haven't found any other bugs other than above. Well actually, maybe a little... But it works.

Graphics - 6/10 - Other than the particles, the graphics fit well. This does NOT mean the graphics are good. Sure 'minimalistic' is okay, but I found much of the graphics to be bland, or total eyesore. The generic brown with black outline (or was it generic green?). The weird bright bricks in the sand place. The strange transitions... Yeah.

Music+Sound - 8/10 - I'm never a good judge of sound, so let's give you a generic four. I like the music, though. Sound doesn't mean much to me though.

Gameplay - 5/10 - The only thing that kept me going in this game was the bosses. The stages are all generic, frustrating, boring, and easy with some really annoying puzzles dashed in here and there. The bosses were however fun and unique, but the collision for them and enemies felt sort of unnatural. The game fluctuates between overly easy and overly annoying (bosses aren't really 'hard' per se) the annoying coming from repeating sections over and over. The bosses are mostly hard because it is nearly impossible to impossible to dodge certain things, the hit box is too big compared to projectile gaps, etc. Also, controls get stuck. Hate. It wasn't a BAD game, but it certainly wasn't good.

Controls - 5/10 - What he said. Sticky controls, mouse, number keys. All cliche, but you have to be more consistent. I've used every kind of control before though, everything from mouse+space, to airplane platformers (what) so it doesn't bother me. Much.

Absorptiveness - 5/10 - How captivating the game is. After playing through once and seeing all the bosses, I really wouldn't play this again except for kicks. but that's how a lot of games are. Also, if I stop playing for a while, I don't get really motivated to come back. It's just a bit boring past the story and bosses. Gameplay is bland and repetitive, enemies are annoying.

Overall - 7/10 - Not really all that bad, but certainly not the best....
JMchaos
Hey everyone! Thanks for rating my game.

I had at one point a new version that made many bosses less annoying, I had also fixed alot of bugs... but it got corrupted and now I lost much of the motivation to redo that updated since it was so much.

On a good note, heres a link to the game guide for those having trouble: yoyogames forums guide

Section for secret bosses at the end.
dcco
NO THE LINK IS BROKEN.

Also, yeah, once my game save file scrwed up, I lost a lot of motivation to keep playing... Sorry...
