At least it's better than your last one, but pay more attention in english and avoid calling your own games great in a media product. The unprofessionalism scares me. Reminds me of my failed attempt at a website.
hardcoregamer
We are being mavericks. Would you like to join the team, and bring the professionalism back? Also I only mentioned my game, because its an exclusive!

Things I liked:
- The headlines with light-grey backgrounds look very clean and nice.
- The table of content. (Many people actually forget this the first time.)

Things I don't like:
- The front page should not be white. It should have a (clean) bakground to attract people.
- Never use WordArt-like text effects. They don't serve any purpose and look ugly.
- The color selection for text and background isn't always the best...
- There are some very simple spelling errors. Always read through both your and other authors' texts and correct before release.

Edit: Pick up some of the other GM magazines (as well as more professional gaming magazines). Read them and think through:
- What are they doing right?
- What are they doing wrong?
- What do they do right that I don't?

The magazine is pretty good, although there is much room for improvement.

For example, the images and drawings didn't always have smooth graphics (mainly the comic about the noob, which also didn't make much sense);

The GML Errors should be more creative, with various levels of difficulty (like, the first problem would be very easy, the second would be normal, the third would be hard and the fourth would be very hard to solve);

Although 3D games are good, you should also point out that they are not perfect.
Intialy Online, although I have never played it, seems to have very repetitive graphics
And Adbarlian Castles could certainly be much improved in the graphics level...
(I'm not saying that I would be able to improve anything in any of those games, but take a commercial 3D game and compare... Even free 3D games have very good graphics afterall)

Please don't take me wrong, I was just giving my opinion. smile.gif

GM magazines can be fun, so I read yours. It was... interesting. Here are some specific suggestions:

1. Avoid excessive text formatting (such as the introductory titles). It can be annoying if over-used.
2. Adopt one formatting style and use it throughout the magazine. Avoid double-spaced text and center-justified text (except for titles).
3. In your section called "Easy Scripts", use left-justified text -- not center-justified. As currently written, the scripts are practically unreadable.
4. Omit the [ ] brackets when you highlight the script errors (p. 12). Since GML uses the [] symbols, using them to highlight errors just causes confusion.
5. Avoid extravagant exaggerations like this:

QUOTE
I have made all the necessary improvements to this magazine so that the professionalism is shown. I have a real team who is helping in the production of this glorious magazine.

This sounds pompous and foolish. Let your readers judge your "professionalism and glory".

6. Limit discussion of your own games and website. That makes your magazine look like an advertisement. Instead, focus on other's work.
7. Have someone proof-read your magazine before it's released. Your spelling was acceptable, but the syntax was horrible. sad.gif Maybe ask a teacher to look at it and make suggestions.

The good news is that it's your first issue and there's plenty of room for improvement. happy.gif

'sigh'
This magazine is very poor at the moment. Promising, yes, but its too messy, discolored, screens are convoluted, and I lost interest quickly.
Patch it up and we'll see if we have a magazine on our hands.
Again, it's quite promising.
Eyas
I am sorry.. there are just too many problems with this one. The GM Weekly article is just unnecessary, no conclusion is made, you start trashing them then just say I am kidding and basically say the opposite of everything you said. The comics were lame, the interview question can be improved. The cover made no sense. Oh.. and even the corrected GML code is wrong.. the first letter of functions cannot be capitalized, it wont work. The common GML problems aren't actual problems and aren't informative.. everyone knows that brackets need to be equal both on closing and opening.. noone ever used a "." with a 'with' statement. noone even inverted the use of { and }.. and adding an argument "5" to an argument-less function makes absolutely no sense.. its not a problem as noone would have added a meaningless unnecessary number to a function they're calling.

I am severely disappointed. So much so that in fact I _never_ post in competitors' topics to say negative things.. but this time I had to.. this just needs much more work to succeed.

Dont give up, but make sure to preview the issue before, show it to others, and get advice. Don't be offended by the advice here, try to use all the criticisms to make yours better.
hardcoregamer
Thank you for the help. I will make sure I make those improvements. Also The cover, was kinda noobish. I will try to make a way better one. I am picking our game magazine's colors as well. Too many colors. I need to also add eye grabbers.
Revel
Alot better than your last one!

However, the layout/graphics were not very good. Even if you just removed most of the jpg smudging on the images, that would help. You should also get a graphic designer.

Also, I recommend that you stop putting your own games in the magazine.
NAL
It was a start, I guess. I can't call it a good start because to me, it was too flawed and/or below average. Suggested improvements:

- Hire a spelling, grammar and punctuation checker to clean up the mistakes in this area.
- Double-check your GML.
- Step away from the Wordart. Use (buy if necessary) a program such as Fireworks or Photoshop to make good-looking headers if you want them to be elaborate, or just stick to clean single-colour text.
- Don't distort pictures. Several I saw were stretched in one way, and not the other.
- On a similar note, don't upscale small pictures. They lose quality and look bad.
- Find a set style and stick to it. Throughout the magazine, titles and text seemed to have randomly-selected colours and fonts. Find a colour (or two) and a font (again, or two) you like, and keep to them for the entirety of the magazine. It's okay to use other colours for things like distinguishment between questions and answers in interviews, but try to make it subtle and choose contrasting or harmonic colours, and avoid clashes.
- Don't try to be funny if you obviously are not.
- Don't diss other websites, organisations, magazines or anything. "I'm just kidding" does not suddenly make it all alright. On the note, if it hasn't already been said, GMWeekly isn't now bi-weekly. They're simply missing a week every now and again, not every other week.
- As well as checkers, get a decent graphic designer.

If you do all that and work very hard at it, you might start being competition for the well-known Game Maker magazines. For now, however, I highly doubt you're a threat.

Terrible magazine. This isn't unique at all, it's like any of the three thousand GM magazines released a day. The layout is ugly, unprofessional, and inconsistent, the content is out-of-place, hard to follow, poorly written, and the content is bland and pointless.
krejic
Well... it's not bad but it could use some work.
And about the preview of your game:

QUOTE

genius. The camera is also wonderful.

On what facts did you based this?
And please, use photoshop or any free program like Paint dot net or something.
You can really pimp your frontpage a lot.

Very unprofessional. The entire magazine is pretty much an example of what not to do: poor design, immediate religious statements, the like. You devote an entire page to something so stupid and pointless, Offensive Coding with Noobware, which is just a waste of space and bytes. Honestly, you need to seriously rethink this idea.

I couldn't agree more. If you make an entire section in the magazine to insult people you think are 'noobs', something is really wrong.

Well, I only got to page 4, but I've read enough. This thread is closed.

Feel free to post your magazine elsewhere, but you may not distribute it on the GMC.

Update:
HCG has apologized and removed the offensive material from his magazine. We won't discuss it further.

I'll re-open this topic so members can discuss the new version (and only the new version).

its perfectly acceptable in my book. besides, this is a reletively new mag. lets be nice, its really OK to put one or two offtopic comments in. or you could have an editors colunm and fill it with whatever you want, like most other GM mags.
Seco Xekko
Aside from the controversial sentence, I also spot other flaws in the "magazine".

1. Saying "I don't care" on the last page is a huge demerit. The "NEW ATTITUDES" clause on the title page has yet to be realized.
2. The solid colours used to highlight text are very unsightly.
3. Emoticons should be reserved for personal blogs and informal chats. Writing a magazine with emoticons, even an online one, is not acceptable.
4. You have interchangeably used serif and sans-serif fonts throughout the magazine. Bad style.
5. Watch your writing style as well. Writing for a magazine is relatively formal compared to making a forum or blog post, and what I've seen on the magazine isn't up to par.

You should try reading more successful GM magazines (such as GMKing and Markup) and see what they're doing that you're not.

no, i've put down constructive suggestion. your personal stances about jesus and how he died for us and all that **** don't have anything to do with game making, so restrain yourself from writing biased stuff like that.
if you wanna be 'reporter', 'editor' or whatever you want, be objective and write about stuff that has some point about subject you discuss.

well i'm off your topic now. if you think i'm wrong be my guest, but don't try to shot my opinion down if you don't like it, especially when i put some reasonable stuff on the table.

Oh, you have no idea how cut this one makes me. Even if you have no sense of design, surely you can tell that swapping from fonts with little fiddly bits to one without DOES NOT LOOK RIGHT, unsless it's a spread with a different theme to the rest of the mag (ie. like a nostalgia piece would use serifs, modern day stuff typically does not)

ARRRRRGGGHHH!
mcoot
This embodies about the worst a GM magazine can be:

Off-topic, religious, offensive statements.

Telling people not to play particular games.

Bad graphical design.

Saying "If you think this is offensive, I don't care!" at the end of the magazine.

One 'super hard' GM coding problem that a- wasn't hard at all, b- didn't even tell you what the 'problem' was and c- was just a block of code put into a square shape.

You obviously don't know what a tutorial rip-off is if you think George W Bush The Game is a tut ripoff. It may not be particularly good but you shouldn't say "I DONT RECOMMEND ANYONE PLAY THIS GAME. WTF! HOW DID IT WIN A CAGE MATCH?"

Just read a proper GM publication MarkUp, GMKing, GMTech, GMWeekly etc. - they don't try to offend, they do spellchecks, they try to put a bit of effort into design.

Try to do better next time.
dbest
Just start with a spell check and use consistent font. That should be the basis for your next magazine.
hardcoregamer
I did use a consistent font. The pdf conversion changed the font type. Anyhow. Spell check and human spell checkers failed.
