* Walkthrough - HTML

Speculum Mortis is a horror-styled point-and-click adventure. Except a few hues of gold and red, all the environments in Speculum Mortis are presented in greyscale to illustrate the darkness and the predominant psychological horror atmosphere. Gameplay itself consists of wandering around a Victorian age residence which was abandoned years ago - or so it seems at first glance.

It is easy and simple to play the game. You only need a functional mouse: left-clicking examines, right-clicking interacts. Readme.txt is included within the .zip-file to provide more information.

REGRET

Speculum Mortis: Regret is an update major enough to have a name of its own. It fixes a great number of issues that players (and even we) found annoying, and also adds an arsenal of extra stuff into the game. Regret is not a wannabe expansion pack, nor a desperate attempt to give the game a new wave of popularity. Instead, Speculum Mortis: Regret is what the original Speculum Mortis should've been, and a little more.

Changes in Regret:

This is quite good, but I gave up quickly when I couldn't get past the piano part... I took the candle, and looked around the room and the rest of the house, but I don't really know what else to do.

I also found the loud noise the text makes very annoying, and it ruins the horror apmosphere. I suggest something more subtle, or even taking it out altogether.

Overall, good job!

You have played 5 Days A Stranger, have't you?

The game itself is great, even though I got stuck finding a way to the back yard.
blue123
The graphics seem really nice in this game. The grayscale really adds to the effect.
pedrosorio
Very well done! Makes me remeber the Series of "n" days "...". The only thing I'd like was an option to turn the typewriting off.

EDIT: Actually it's quite a lot like 5 days a stranger, very good, still playing.
grandhighgamer
"O rly?"

I'm stuck just after I found her hanging, discovered the book on exercism, and looked in the kitchen. So basically I'm stumped.
Onion King
Thanks for feedback. I actually am a fan of Chzo Mythos -series (5/6/7 Days & Trilby's Notes), which kind of inspired me to make this game.

Due to feedback I've gotten from other players too, gameplay might've experienced some minor changes (text issues for example) by the time the next version comes out. I hope it won't take too long.

For those who are stuck in some part of the game:
sh@de, use the candle in your inventory, then find the main gate.
-Oakleaf-, the backyard is to the left from the frontyard. You have to visit the gate first so that the tree shadows in the courtyard become accessible.

* Made with GM 6.1, hence not Vista-compatible.

Just want to point out there is a converter to make GM6 games Vista compatible, found here.
Don't have the time to download, convert, and try it just yet, but I wanted to say that from the screen the graphics look really good. I really like that style, especially for a 'horror' type of game.

I'll have to show my girlfriend this one also, as I'm pretty sure she is also a fan of 5 days, etc.

Where's my secret hint? :(

Gotta say it scared the heck outta me when the lightning flashed and I saw the girl hanging. blink.gif

You definitely have a gift in programming and graphics. Great job! I'll post again later when I beat the game happy.gif

So far, I'd give it a 9/10 (I think it's a little too freaky)

I'm stuck at the same point as grandhighgamer. I figure the next I think I have to do is to put out the fire to grab the shiny thingie and check out the loose brick inside the fireplace, but I haven't got the slightest clue as to how I can accomplish this.

Okay, nevermind. I got past this. I already mixed the ingredients I need for the exorcism, but I'm at loss with the last part of the exorcism instruction. Can someone help me with this?
pedrosorio
I really don't get the game. I want to pick up the bucket from the kitchen so that I can put it under the place the roof is leaking, to put out the fire. However I'm not allowed to pick the bucket. I want to get the pick so that I can, for example open the other room, however I'm not allowed... Why can't I grab these objects?

Ahh! I got it.

You asshat. How did you get it?

It's just ignorant to brag about how you completed it and then to offer no advice.

Spoloriz: Got pitch for from devil and got key to bedroom?
-Oakleaf-
The ending is kinda sad... I was expecting something more dramatic.
But great game anyway, one of the best p&cs here (and one of the only).

Kyllä Suomi osaa.

NICE AS HELL. This has to be the first gm-game ive played until i actually won. Love it all, truly great.

I know it's probably WAY to late to tell you this but:
Faded and muted colors are better than all out greyscale. You achieve the same effect you get with black and white (minus a little noir-ish style) with a little more stuff to look at. just little hints of darker colors.

Thats my opinion any way.

I'll dl it soon, but I g2g2 bed...'s midnight where I live right now.
clod14
I found a small bug. ;] but can easily be fixed. i thnk. (tats if its a bug)

When the piano room is dark. (candels off) The piano Playes. and u cant click on the piano.
But when u leave and come back turn the candle on. and then leave and come back again. (the rooms dark, And candles off :]) u can still click on the piano and other things :/

seee :] and there was another problem but i forgot what it was sad.gif ill try to remember and post it biggrin.gif nonethe less its an awsome game! im still in the piano part tho tongue.gif

Sorry, grandhighgamer, I somehow didn't notice your question on the first page, and recently I've been too busy to reply at all.

The graphics of the game are actually made by my friend. I did the programming, music, text and the main conception.

Splinter: from the beginning, our objective was to make a game with greyscale graphics, not with low-saturation colors. It is of course a matter of opinion, but I myself think we did the right decision.

The little typo and the minor issue with the dark piano room pointed out by Shadow Link and clod14, respectively, will both be fixed in v1.03. Hopefully it is going to be the last version.

In case you're stuck, here is a walkthrough: Speculum Mortis Walkthrough

Spoilers:
As soon as I saw the flash of him on the floor with the blood I knew the ending. I feel sorry for him now. Insensitive ghosts.
jelleisgoed
Nice!! Well done smile.gif
Senar
you didnt post anything dry.gif
-Oakleaf-
?that was random.

I just played through Trilby's Notes and now I can see things more clearly. The storyline in this game isn't the best, but still very good. But why is there a sitate from Twin Peaks?
Power-up
Very well done. The music along with the graphics (which are amazing by the way) bolsters the gloomy creepiness. The coolest thing about it was that as I progressed, I found myself getting gradually more frantic. I apparently just lost (I won't say what made me lose, could be a spoiler), but I will continue playing later.
Shadow Link
Bug:Play normally throughout the game until you get to the part where you fall through the floor and into the library. Read the exorcism book. Once you pick up the chalice, fill it with wine. Then go and grab salt. (At this part, it won't let me pick up the bucket and keeps me stuck).

Edit: Awesome game by the way. I enjoyed it tongue.gif

this is awesome. great game, not much to say about it.
nice, really nice.

Yikes, I saw the ghost and I nearly jumped out of my seat. I didn't save so now I have to start at the begining. D=
Onion King
Nice to know it's actually giving shivers to people.

-Oakleaf-, we just like to add citations from different sources into our games. And by the way, the owl statue at the backyard was originally meant to have disappeared when the owl had flown by at the frontyard.

Shadow Link, honestly, I don't think you encountered a bug; you just might've forgotten to examine the fireplace before trying to take the bucket.
rayquazadude
Is there any particular reason it's called speculum mortis? It brings odd images to mind.
Onion King
Read the Latin dictionary in the library after seeing the mirror for the first time to find out the meaning of the name.
Power-up
Ha I beat it (with a little help from the walk through, but not much). I mean how are you supposed to know to put the scimitar in the hole in the iron maiden. At first I thought the ending was a little disappointing, but now that I think about it, it is pretty compatible with the whole horror theme.
Virtanen
Because I already posted in the GMS and I don't want to repeat myself,
I got only one thing to say about this game:

It's awesome!

Keep up the good work! biggrin.gif

Virtanen

looks great but the link is broken...
Reverx13
Nice game. I played it through, and thought the ending to be quite fitting aside from what others are saying. You could tell that a lot of time and effort was put into it. I admit that I would not have beaten it had I not been able to use the walk through as heavily as I did - take that as you will. I did spot the weakness of the storyline, as others have been mentioning, but I can see how this may be justified. Overall, I enjoyed it, nice job.
Shadow Link
Yeah, I went back and tried that after I made my post. Forgot to edit. Good job though!
JRLS
NICE GAME!
I hate point and click stuff, but this games make me change my mind!

excellent graphics, nice music, overall good atmosphere!
Tha black and white style is awesome!
nice story too, the owl, the hanging girl with the lighting, all good stuff. Nice details,

a few con though:
- the menu system with S/M and X is confusing, i would change it to an "M" (only when you have map it's visible), an "I" for info on the room, and an "S" for saving game and "X" for exit (or use escape key for that) instead of all the left, right clicking stuff for the menu. The left and right click for the items and stuff i would let unchanged.
- no real full screen. I would change it so it scales to the whole screen, instead of just adding a black border which is useless..

All in all, i give it 9.7/10
nice work!
Onion King
Once again, thanks for the great feedback!

Yesterday I finally managed to upload Speculum Mortis v1.03 which includes several bug fixes and has had the text fading speed decreased. I also made a few changes on the text to help people proceed in the game. Hopefully it will fulfill its duty as the final version of the game.

JRLS, I admit that the inventory button system might be a little complicated, but it can still be used without any bigger problems. The reason for doing it that way is that we wanted to keep the inventory interface as simple as possible.

Full screen with black borders is there to give a more gloomy effect; window mode was added just because some people want to do other things while playing the game. 640x480 resolution was not made available because a) some people hate low resolution modes b) it didn't fit the game in our opinion. I myself like full screen mode much more than playing in a window, even though the only difference is the black frame.

I have now updated v1.03 to make it compatible with Windows Vista.

24th November
Version 1.03 had a major bug that prevented the examination of items in the piano room, thus not allowing player to proceed. I have now uploaded v1.04, which will hopefully be the final, bug-free version. Download here.

i am extremely impressed. i actually got quite scared and the ending is very nice. im looking forward to see more games from you.
