Pretty exceptional stuff. Since I'm primarily a Linux developer this will be a huge +1 from me. Glad I bought the 50% off Masters Collection when I did. Keep it up, can't wait for extensions and LLVM!

As borut mentioned, 39dll and Faucet networking are your two best choices when it comes to real time online multiplayer.
39dll is slower but easy to learn since there is so much documentation for it on these forums. You are likely to have more success with this.

39dll (and Faucet for this matter) utilise what is called socket networking. It is much, much more powerful than the vanilla mplay_ functions that GM comes with. Hell, the GM functions are so terrible that they have been deprecated (or obsolete, rather) in GM:Studio.

To have these questions answered, you are better off searching beginner tutorials in Game Maker or reading the manual that is supplied with the program.

39dll has a ridiculous amount of support, so if you're new to networking but need an extension/dll that handles socket networking for you, 39dll is hard to go past.
from my experiences however, faucet networking is reasonably faster at pretty much everything. the documentation is scarce, but once you get to know it it is quite a powerful networking extension.

personally i prefer to write my own socket networking extensions that suit a particular purpose, but if that's not your thing the two best options are the ones i stated above.

Okay thanks guys. I wasn't aware of the roadmap.
Well hopefully the Socket-based Networking is simple enough for me to communicate with outside of GM. Otherwise I'm sure I can settle for writing an engine in Extensions.

Might pick up an Android license around Christmas :)
