Gamemaker: Studio Bytecode Specification

With the release of the Early Access version of GameMaker: Studio, users can now disassemble their programs and view the underlying virtual machine bytecode.

I have documented a large portion of the bytecode to aid the public in understanding how GameMaker works internally and help optimize their applications.

If you need to reference an instruction, you can obtain a permalink by looking it up in the table here.

Documenting the bytecode is still a WIP, so lots of instructions are still missing.

How Are Gamemaker Strings Encoded?

Of the following, which encoding matches a GameMaker string?

  • ANSI
  • UTF8
  • UTF16

I tried the manual, but it talks a lot about unicode without actually saying how strings are stored.

The spam is getting worse and the Spam Box clearly isn't catching it.

What Are The *Actual* Rules Behind Str Comparison?

I noticed that strings can be compared using the < and > operators.


My intuition is that this is based on a direct comparison of the ASCII values of characters from left to right. Does anyone know the exact way these operators work on strings?
