Well you definitely don't want

x=view_xview[0]+x

something like

x=view_xview[0]+48

should work perfectly. I'm suspecting it's a typo somewhere.

Also, it shouldn't matter which step event you put it in, as the draw event is executed after all three step events.

Actually, you do. place_meeting tests if the calling instance placed at the specified position will trigger a collision with object obj. If the calling instance has no mask, then it will never trigger a collision. Same goes for collision_point.

Your object(s) probably didn't have a mask.

I just verified this in Game Maker 8.1, and place_meeting is only returning true and false. The part of the documentation you quoted just says that you can pass a specific instance id to place_meeting -- it still only returns true or false.

Specific to the original problem, using place_meeting simply won't work.

lengthdir is great. It's really just a shortcut for sin and cos functions -- nothing more than simple trigonometry.
