Wow! Sorry it took me so long to actually see that you replied to this. Thanks so much for playing the game and posting this audio file. Hard to believe it's been about a year since this Jam, right? Much appreciated, sir.

I wasn't much of a fan of those games. Though, they did have a neat concept. If done right, I think a game about a musical artist could be fun, and also an effective way of spreading the word about said artist. Of course, if you're looking to have a widely distributed product, you have to deal with issues of copyright and intellectual property, and all sorts of boring things nobody likes to think about... I find it much better to make Pong clones.

I like making lists of things I need to get done in a work session, and then working continuously until it's finished. I make small lists, with usually only 30-45 minutes worth of work. Then I break for five minutes, make another list, and then go. Helps for me. I've seen other people go mad trying to use that system.

Get into the groove of how the program works by making some small, polished games. Post 'em here, make friends/contacts, maybe get them involved in your projects. It's very hard to create games of very high quality on your own, and this forum is rich in members with a multitude of talents. And if you have a reputation of creating good stuff, more people will want to work with you.
The Game Maker's Apprentice/Companion are great books, but start with the manual that comes with GM. Everything you need to know about the program is in there, and then the books will make excellent supplementary materials to it.

One important ingredient is self-motivation and discipline. If you want to make money from the things you create, you have to get into the habit of working on your projects every day. To be a serious artist, you can't just work on your stuff when inspiration hits you, and leave it sitting cold at all other times. Every time you sit down to work, have a list of things you want to accomplish in that work session. Then do them. Do this every day.
