Lives and restarting the game once you run out
30 July 2012 - 02:18 PM
Hey, I'm making a 2d adventure platform game. I currently already have a health bar drawn up and it works fine. Now I want to extend from that. I want to know how to:
Draw up 3 hearts (lives) under my health bar. [I have a heart sprite, and my health bar is located at
x1: 2
y1: 2
x2: 96
y2: 24]
Once they're drawn up, I want to know how to make it so one heart dissapears when my health bar runs out, and it restarts the CURRENT room and resets the healthbar.
Also when ALL 3 hearts disappear, it takes you to a room (in this case it will be a GAME OVER room) and it displays your score (I have scores working fine but I just dont know how to display a total score at the end of the game [this was not in the title but if youre feeling helpful].)
Thanks.

Making a speed potion for a platformer
30 July 2012 - 09:57 AM
Hey, I'm making a 2d adventure platformer using Gamemaker Lite. I have an objExplorer and objSpeedPotion objects and corresponding spr's (sprites). I want to know how I can make it so when my character goes into the potion, it disappears and my character gets a 60% movement increase. I use a Create event containing a movement_speed variable, and it is set to 4. I also use a step event with some code that triggers the variable every-time I press left and right (Keyboard) event. [I'm telling you this so you know how my movement engine works).
So in all I want to know (in simple detail [i'm new]), how I can collide with this potion, it disappears, it changes my movement_speed to 9 for 10 seconds.
As said, please use simple instructions, especially if you're going to tell me in GML.
Thanks

I need some advice on how to make my game better
29 July 2012 - 06:06 PM
In my 2d platformer adventure game atm I have spike traps, spring jumps, falling cages and rocks, web that slows you down, coins, gems, healing potions, soon to be falling bombs that explode, speed potions, and obstacles (jumping puzzles etc) if you fall you land in lava, different backgrounds.
I plan for the player to have 3 lives and a health bar.
I'm still not sure whether I should have shooting in the game, its just to much to do and I cant draw for crap (cant add my bow onto my pre-made player sprite).
I want to somehow incorporate killing monsters in the game. I have a couple of monster sprites, but im not sure how i should go about them. What are some other ways to kill monsters other than falling on their head or shooting them?
I just want some recommendations to make my game have more stuff to do, have more things that kill you, more stuff to dodge, jump, traps etc. but ive ran out of ideas.
thanks.

Dropping and Exploding bombs
29 July 2012 - 05:52 PM
I have an animated explosion sprite and a bomb sprite, and I want to make it so the bombs fall at a constant rate repeatedly; (eg; once it gets blown up it reappears where it originally was and falls again) and explode once they hit the ground, then reappears at its original point and fall again. So when the bomb touches the ground, I want the animated explosion sprite to play there. Also, if the bomb lands on the player or youre in the explosion (or something), you 15 health.
sprite names:
sprBomb
sprExplosion
__________
same for obj as well
objBomb
objExplosion
thanks
