Topics I've Started

IndependentGaming.net

12 October 2012 - 07:14 PM

Greetings, GMC.
I am a mostly unknown presence here, so let me introduce myself and IndependentGaming. I am an indie GM developer who used to hang out at the YYGF. Almost a year ago, I began a small wordpress blog called Indiegraph, writing reviews on the good games I came across. Within a week, Super Guy joined me (In the past 6 months or so he was largely responsible for the survival of Indiegraph - the site would be dead if not for him).
Anyway, back to the story.

Over time, Indiegraph grew. I had the pleasure of working with some amazing writers like Super Guy, Lawsome1997 and Abhas. The original forum thread on the GMC is here. Together, we have turned the little Indiegraph into a site that we're proud of, full of indie game reviews, interviews with developers, news on competitions, and even epic rants on game design.

I'm proud to say that Indiegraph is now IndependentGaming.net. Non-profit, team-managed, and utterly indie. We do our best to bring you new content daily - it might be a new interview with an up-and-coming developer, it might be a competition, or a game review. If you wish to contribute an article, show off a game, get in touch with us at contact@independentgaming.net.

We'll keep you updated on our latest posts and content (or point your browser over to http://independentgaming.net).

For those of you who do know me (Super Guy tells me a lot of our old friends are here): yes, I disappeared completely from forums and gamedev. I had a lot of deep personal and family trouble going on - college exams were just the tip of the iceberg. I doubt I'll ever be as active as I was in the YYGF, but we (the team) will keep this thread updated.

Thank you for your time.
Regards,

Global variable / logic structure issues

27 December 2011 - 04:50 AM

In THE MAZE, I implemented random level selection. For this used a set of simple chance functions to select a level name at random, and looped it 5 times to make sure SOMETHING got selected. The level name was written to a global variable that the loading screen would check to load the appropriate room.

After around 3 levels however, the game kept resetting to the default maze.

Another issue. Each map triggers a global variable to keep track of whether it's been loaded or not. Eg: the 'Simplex" level sets global.simplex from 0 to 1. The selection process explicitly checks whether the map has been loaded before, and if it has, it resumes chance-based selection.
No luck. Maps that have been selected [global.simplex = 1] keep getting loaded.

This problem extends to the compiled exe as well and appears on other computers.
Do help.
I'm a fairly advanced user as far as 2D GM is concerned, and the pseudocode, when laid out, is perfectly logical.

Indiegraph

INDIEGRAPH is an indie gaming magazine written BY indie developers, with a strong focus on the Game Maker community. Our target is to provide coverage for lesser known indies, especially the talent found here on Yoyogames. We review completed games, W.I.Ps and host daily interviews with independent game developers. As a plus, we also provide community news on competitions.

It doesn't matter if you're an established developer OR an unknown - if your game is good, we'll get in touch with you. We've covered works from the likes of Battleships Forever to the Free Indie Bundle to Ludum Dare to Genetic Garden; stay tuned for more.

If you think your game's good enough, drop us a mail at indiegraph@yahoo.com/
