The first thing that popped in my head was a toilet bowl.
How many games take place in a toilet bowl?

More seriously, maybe you can breed and have your grems follow you like homies.
Objectives could be like procreating as much as you can, and then take your offspring and feed them into open wounds of small insects and mamels.

I tend to agree with ryaths more.
Having the moves the same but make them stronger.
for example:

Squirtle
-Tackle
-Water Gun
-Bite
-Defence Curl

Wartortle
-Headbut
-Water Pulse
-Bite
-Withdraw

Blastoise
-Skull Bash
-Hydro Pump
-Crunch
-Protect

These will obviously not be chosen in a turn based fashion, but in real time.
So the names won't really come into the game...

Nice work guys, just a little busy at the moment to sort out credit and stuff.
Porygon is awesome, I like how he doesn't slide along and actually moves his treds.

Hmm, just thinking about gameplay. I think that it could work if each Pokemon had just a couple attacks or something. Not sure. that way, as Pokemon evolved, they could have like one attack overlap and another new one. I'm not sure how many attacks you wanted.

If you could give me a list of the animations you want it would be very helpful.
