Time to Debate Copyright laws & patenting?

08 August 2012 - 10:59 PM

Over the years people have decided copyright, patent and trademark certain types of resources many times after the development of ideas which they thought were good and want to make a profit off of. Reserving resources for specific individuals has served to protect the ideas and resources which they wanted to use from other people using, possible lawsuits from their own use and/or to make profit gain. More and more people are reserving resources as time goes by. I do not feel that people should have the right to reserve a resource, hoard it all to themselves, then making it enforceable

illegal for all people on the planet to use any of the resource as well as any to come. I do however think that it should be ok for people to have natural copyright in which case if a person were to take or copy an image directly from someone. Supposing that someone posted an image on their website which the sprite with ms paint, but someone comes and copies the image then uses it on their website. I would consider alright as a copyright law with the ability to sue. Here is a list of reason why I think that people should not be able to reserve a resource with laws prevent people from using it:

1. People who reserve resources for themselves might decide to hoard the resource all for themselves and not let anyone legally use those images. In most countries copyright laws are recognize so it is almost like a world wide monopoly.

2. Millions of people come to Earth each generation who could do the work which is often reserved, but yet maybe just person keeps resources from many who could have done the work or would have done the work in the future. As bussiness continue to do this with many images, sounds codes etc, the ability to use resources like those in the future will become far thinner and risker. Futures generations of people who want to use this might also be duped and we will have specific organisations or people controlling the world in ways. This seems very dangerous and also very unfair to other people in the world. If a person is blonde hair should they own rights to the use of all blonde in the world? What if she decided that anyone with blonde hair needed to have it removed? Think about the laws prevent ethnic groups from doing things. I do not think people should be able to get rights like this.

3. It will become very risky to make movies, games and likewise in the future. Many authors do not even like it when other people use similar game concepts. Thankfully game concepts cannot be sued for. At present people can get people in jail and sue for large suns of money. What if a person decided to make a small mmo and then some company patent the images they were using? They could really be ruined after that.

4. People who reserve resources might hoard them and not let others use them for decades.

What are your thoughts about this? Do you support the ability to reserve resources for only one person or group or do you think that it is bad?

About Server Development for Mmos

07 August 2012 - 05:59 PM

Servers these days cost a lot, but yet I noticed that there are people who sell them for monthly costs? How do these people get the servers and is it possible for a person to build their own server. I wanted to make an mmo and was thinking about different possibilities like this.

Question about BMT micro

07 August 2012 - 04:29 PM

I wanted to sign up with BTM micro to sell games and earn some money, but I noticed that BTM micro seems to require a company name at sign up. I am not apart of a company at the time which I am witting this message, but I made the game with Game Maker. At the present time the game needs more work before it should be released, but I felt that it might not hurt to check with places where I could sell the game at the least. Should I put down Yoyogames as the company or should I try to find some other means of selling the game.
