Feedback On A Website Idea

03 May 2013 - 07:41 PM

I am contemplating on developing a website, but before I get completely invested in it, I'd like to know how people like the idea and if they're interested. The nature of the site makes it unusable if there are only 10 or so active users.

It is a game development competition site that focuses on short and frequent jams. Think like those five minute competitions in the challenges forum. Every two weeks or so, the site gives a theme and some randomized time (somewhere around 30 minutes to 7 hours) to make a game. The winner is voted for and they get digital badges, candy, assorted fruits, etc. Every eight weeks or so there will be a bigger competition that lasts 48 hours, hopefully not clashing with other big gamedev competitions.

So what I ask is: would you join this community and participate in the competitions? How often would you be able to compete? Will you be able to play all the entries? If nobody is interested in the idea, it won't work and it isn't worth following through with.

Webgl And Scaling

26 April 2013 - 12:47 AM

Pixel scaling is done really badly in webGL. Look at this image: a sample game with the view sized 4x.

Pixel-graphic games really suffer with this graphic method.

"Remember Me" Doesn'T Work When Signing In

Whenever I leave this site and come back, I have to sign in again. Can't these forums ever work?

Titles Are Capitalized Strangely

15 March 2013 - 09:05 PM

The forum seems to automatically capitalize every first letter in a word and make everything else lowercase. A word with an apostrophe in it counts the letter after that apostrophe as a new word. This is a bit annoying.

Looking For Long-Term Partner(S) For Gmc Jam

15 March 2013 - 12:14 AM

I've participated in a few GMC Jams and one thing I've always wanted to do was work in a team. I requested one in the topic itself, but it's never worked out. It would be a great way to split the workload and make a bigger game and make every aspect of the game great, including things that not everyone is specialized in. If you're nice to work with, we could stay together for multiple jams.

When PMing me about joining, tell me:
  • any games you have done. I'd like to see a portfolio to see if you're any good. For me, you can see the game in my signature or this one.
  • what you can and can't do. I personally am very good at code and level design, less than perfect but still good at making a game fun, and decent at pixel art but mediocre at any other type of art. Drawing is time-consuming and a dedicated art guy would be great. We should fill in each others' gaps.
  • your time zone. I'm at GMT -5. It doesn't necessarily have to work out perfectly; not matching up perfect may even be a good thing. I could do work on the game for a while and send it to you to work on while I sleep. The only requirement is that you're awake when the theme is announced so we can discuss ideas as soon as possible.
  • Your Skype info so that we can talk real-time about our games. If you can think of any other messaging method that's quicker than e-mail, say it.
  • if any real-life complications could interrupt the Jamming experience. It happens, but splitting the workload does mean that you may not have to work from sun-up to sundown. Full-time Jamming isn't an absolute requirement, but I'd prefer if you did.
