Nethack & Vulture's Eye

NETHACK

Download Link - http://downloads.sou...use_mirror=iweb

Nethack is an old DOS dungeon crawler game, and is arguably one of the more complex games to have been created. It features randomly generated dungeons, sandbox-like play, plenty of open ended material, tons of items, monsters, and events, along with an extremely challenging difficulty level. The game is easy to pick up, nearly impossible to finish. There are many strategies, many ways to die... the possibilities are endless. There are a bunch of classes to choose from, each with their own unique differences. Every key does something to - That should just speak unique complexity. The game possesses tons of RPG elements, yet it is only compromised of symbols. Nethack is also one of the most ported games, being available for almost all operating systems, and even the I-Phone.

Don't let it's poor appearance fool you, for those who actually need graphical representation, a "vanilla" Nethack version is available. The download link above is, I think, the graphical version. You can play with the ASCII characters by enabling an option in-game.

If you are a fan of RPG's, and especially Dungeon Crawlers, check this out. It'll be sure to provide you enjoyment for a long time. It's one of my favorite games of all time, mainly since I enjoy RPG's a lot.

The story behind Nethack is to find the Amulet of Yendor, sealed at the bottom of this random, 50+ level dungeon. Getting it is not nearly as hard as ascending to offer the amulet to your god, which is where every decision can be your last. Are you up to the challenge?

VULTURE'S EYE

Vulture's Eye is the same as Nethack, but much different. It possesses music, sound effects, Isometric graphics, a rotatable plane, and a click-able interface. It also has the same engine as Nethack, so there is no difference in Gameplay.

Sadly, this excellent, much funner port of the game is no longer available. All you can find now is the Source Code, which doesn't work unless you have the right 3rd party files, which are gone too. Good News though! I've taken the liberty of uploading the Windows ( 32bit only :D ) Installer for this amazing port! It took me a while to find this on my hard drive, but I sure am glad I found it.

Go there and download the installer, installing the game should be very easy. Please note Vulture's Eye is a little glitchy. Never quit the game in fullscreen. Also, running the game for the 1st time may not work, but every time after that it should work. Just a heads up :D

So, if your interested, check out one of the download links above! Tell me what you think. I find it to be a fun and entertaining game, but it is not for everybody.

Violation Error

19 November 2009 - 01:27 AM

I'm having the strangest of issues with my most recent game. It involves a weird violation error that only some of the players are getting. I personally never get it, and since It's my game, it's a pretty bad situation to be in. One of the players who gets the error sent me a screenshot.

Any clues on how to fix this? I currently think it has to do with surfaces, but surfaces have worked until the latest update. The game does externally load DLLs and MP3s, but it has never had this problem with this until recently. Here's a link to the game.

Any help is appreciated. I really need to fix this...

A Decision Based Game In A Surreal Environment

13 August 2009 - 10:28 PM

I've been working on a game called Phantasmagoric for about a week now, and I was wondering if anybody would like the idea.

Story: During the recent troubles of our planet, people who make the correct decisions are in short supply. So, a High-Tech company was founded. The name of this company is "The Articu Testing Group" and there goal is to gather up as much people who make the right decisions as possible; they will not tell anybody there real motives for this group. Everyday, this group randomly selects a person off of the street and beams them into there hidden underground Facility. They are then placed in a large room, where they are Debriefed on what they are about to experience. They then solve a short puzzle to leave the room and proceed through the 16 tests. There used to be 32 tests until nobody was ever able to finish all of them, mainly dieing of thirst before finishing. Each test has multiple objects to interact, and they all have 4 endings. The Tester progressed through the test until they finish test 16, where they are placed in a room for judging on there performance.

Of course, things don't always turn out that way. Something isn't right as the Tester enters Test 16, and soon figures out what went horribly wrong.

GamePlay: The Gameplay of this game is pretty easy to understand, yet is a little complex at the same time.
You are the Tester and must go through all 16 Tests. At the end, something goes horribly wrong and this thinking game quickly turns into a Survival Horror Platformer. The player has to interact with objects and people in the test to create the outcome. There are 4 types of outcomes in a test: Good, Bad, Fair, Unfair. Each are achievable in different ways. There is an Example Test Below.

The Game is a 2D Platformer in a Dark, Surreal Environment. Surfaces are used to create Advanced Lighting Effects, with shadowing. The player uses the WASD pad or Arrow Keys to move around and Jump. Double Jumping is possible. The Player also has to use the Moust to Interact with Objects. LMB picks up objects, and RMB on another Object causes you to interact with that object and the object your holding. Using these objects, you must attempt to create an outcome to the test. There is also 4 different outcomes to the Game.

Example Test:

You arrive in the First Test. The room is pretty empty, except for one  tall mesa like structure. Some platforms are floating to help you get  to the top. At the top is a man who is prepared to jump into a spike  pit below. As you approach him, he says that there is no point in  trying to make him stop. His wife and kids hate him, and his life has  gone to heck.

A small room lights up above, and it has 4 pieces of paper. Clicking  on the 1st one brings up a sheet of paper with writing on it. It reads:

"Dear Jim, I am sorry about our argument earlier today. The kids and I  forgive you. Let's try to make sure this doesn't happen again, ok?  Please don't do anything rash.

  - Melissa"

  The 2nd reads:

"Dear Jim, I am SO very sorry about the fight yesterday. I love you,  and that's all I care about. Please come back, I will accept you for  what you are.

  - Melissaa"

  The 3rd reads:

"Dear Jimmy, this is your ex-wife. I heard about your argument  yesterday with your normal wife. It must of been tough. Why don't you  come back to me? I love you more then she does.

  - Carnolie"

The 4th and Final one reads:

"Dear Jimmywimmy, This is a letter of sincere thought. I'm sorry about  everything, everything. I've been so stressed out lately. Me and the  kids welcome you back to our house. Please come back, we can't bare to  see you die. We love you Jim.

  - Melissa"

There is also a rope in the Corner, next to a pistol.

It's not as easy as it may sound. Giving the Suicidal Man just 1 Letter may not be enough. Or, you could just end his misery with the Pistol. You could even tie him up in the rope and drag him away from the Spike Pit.

So, would you play a Game like this? I would, it's Non-Linear and it's quite Surreal.

Here is a screenshot of the Main Menu. I do have screenshots of the actual game, but I don't know if I should put them up since what they depict may change during Development.

This game will give you 5 test, with 3 choices each. Pick the right choice, since you can only pick it once. This game uses the same method as 2DCubes game Executuion. At the end, after the 5 tests, you can view the aftermath of each decision you made. Enjoy, and remember this is no joke  :):
