#4932139 GMC "Fresh Start"? - Your feedback wanted

Posted by orange08 on 09 January 2016 - 05:50 PM

More importantly, if the forum get's purged, there's gonna be a rush to create the new versions of what few off-topic topics are actually worth recreating. I can dibs on Random Thoughts and ideas.

New versions of the ones worth recreating?
So that means none.

I agree with Yellow and Monkey. Option 3 seems best.

Just archive the current forum, create a new one on a different URL...

also:

No off-topic section please (see quote in signature)

and

Bring back the cage match!!

and congrats to Chance, who, on the new forums, will finally be able to reach a more respectable reputation rating than he has now:

Ok, the presentation is... fantastic. The jumping & movement is quite nicely smooth. The graphics are pretty good too.(very good attention to detail)

Now, a few criticisms...

Some of the dialogue is a bit overly silly... and I doubt I will be the only person who is annoyed by the laughing sound effect XD

The sound effects in general weren't bad... but I think non-SFXR ones would sound better & be more suitable for the game.

The character names are a bit too similar, having tendency to have too many U's and O's, Mayo Kinubo... I don't remember the other names I encountered... they're all too similar. I think it's important to give the characters names that are distinctive from eachother so you don't get them mixed up or forget them. (E.G. Balrog, Misery, Toroko, King, Quote, all characters from Cave Story, all very distinct names)

I didn't understand how to modify the controls on the menu settings... it seemed impossible to change anything... almost as if it's just a screen to tell you what the controls are, not to modify them.

Incidentally, if you wanted this game to be kid friendly... I think you might want to make the bubble bouncing a little easier... I died/fell down way too many times...

I hope this feedback helps you to improve the game somewhat. It really is quite good from what I've played so far, the music is super. The game in general reminded me a lot of a children's story, which is good, it reminded me of another game, Castles In The Sky: https://www.youtube....h?v=HYdE8s9n1HY

I only reached the part where you get the hat from... I think Mayo was his name... but I will play further later and search for the red horned guy.

Nice work!

@Camper125Lv
You are correct, I searched and found the place where the holes are. I recommend not going through the holes, or you might end up just falling outside the room. Thanks for reporting! :)

@Simon_Mitchison
Thanks for the positive comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
I am trying to keep the game relatively simple, so a sprint button may not be very likely to be implemented.

@LarryP
Thanks! :)

@fox in a box
Thanks for all the suggestions! A few of those might just end up in the game!
I do plan on making the balloon re-appearance a little more smooth. Thanks for the reminder.

@RangerX
Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to see about improving how the player climbs the vines.
As for a control configuration screen, I've made it so you can use either the arrow keys or WASD... so I'm not sure I understand why control configuration would be necessary.

@GameQuester
About the plants, you need to get off the vine part, and get onto a leaf in order to jump. I realize it's a bit odd once you are on the very top of the vine... I may see about fixing that soon.
Also thanks for noticing the thing with the octopus cutscene, it should be easy to fix that problem! :)

@FriendlyGames
Thanks for the nice comment! The green ghost is usable, the carrot is not usable in the game yet, though.

@kupo15
Thanks for the suggestion about the vines, I'll definitely look into fixing that.
There is an overarching story to the game, but I'm not going to use words, I'm simply going to use your experience throughout the game. Keep in mind there is not a tremendous amount of story in the game yet, it's mostly just laid some groundwork for future parts of the story.
The orbs have not much purpose, except that whenever you can reach the end of the game, you will be rewarded somehow if you manage to collect 100% of them.
Thanks again for the constructive feedback, I find it very helpful.

@roa
it is very similar and yet different :)

I've been held up by some things recently but development is resuming now, in GameMaker Studio(before it was GM8)! Because of this change your old save files won't work, but hopefully that won't be much of a problem.

Working on some new areas:

Thanks again to everyone for all your helpful feedback!

#4919005 Iji 1.6 (updated 7 March)

Posted by orange08 on 12 December 2015 - 01:57 PM

Quote from Daniel Remar's website:

22 November 2015
Small updates
Hyper Princess Pitch and Princess Remedy have received some small graphical updates. I hope to return to my spare time projects next year too, namely the Strawberry game and Iji 1.7, which will include porting it to some version of Game Maker more likely to run on modern systems.

Are you guys aware that he is planning to port the game to a newer version of GM as well?

#4918832 Gebub's Adventure [now on Greenlight!]

Posted by orange08 on 11 December 2015 - 11:41 PM

@RangerX
The game is heavily inspired by Seiklus(not what you would call a clone, though)! :)
I hope you'll enjoy playing it.

2. I don't think I understand your complaint about the feet... o_O

They're no complaint about the feet. It's the torso/head, it should bob or hop a little while walking and on ground.
As it is now, the legs move while the rest stays perfectly still.

i completely forgot about that... definitely going to see about implementing some subtle head bobbing

3. I think that's a good idea, too... I will try to implement that(if I can find some wind sound) :)

Freesound.com + account. And stay subtle. Ambient is always subtle.

I use freesound.com frequently! :D I did search for wind there, but was not able to find anything suitable.

4. Thanks for the animal suggestions! Have you seen all the animals in the game so far? there are a bunch of them, but you have to travel far to see them all

I know that I haven't seen them all yet. Oh man this game.. xD
Currently, a mole, flies, butterfly's, turtle, squid, squirel (Ice age reference!), beetles sitting at camp, accidentally burning a marshmallow.
I've got a painkiller and still a carrot. You should make an indication that you have these items, some kind of inventory, because I have short-term memory issues.
When I'm not reminded to them, I forget stuff.

Actually it sounds like you've seen pretty much all of them!
The game does have an inventory, you need to press the Escape key to see it.

6. The game doesn't really have easter eggs... it does have some secret spots, though... I'll definitely add some more secret secrets in the future, though.

It's good to give a wink towards other games every once in a while. Don't be scared to throw in some extra jokes. Certain things were pretty funny to me.
About suggestion 5 and 7. These were kinda meant to add some fun challenge to the game's enemy's in an unique way. Not sure about them, but you could try experimenting with such things.

The concept of enemies is slightly tricky for this game because there is no player death. The only things difficult to overcome are puzzles and challenges(like the balloon area) that set you back if you make a mistake. There may indeed be some enemy-esque creatures/obstacles, but they won't be ones that inflict harm.

Thanks for the response! :)

Greenlight Page: http://steamcommunit...s/?id=619430503

Gebub's Adventure takes place in a large and mostly peaceful world. The game follows the travels of Gebub, a creature who came from something peculiar. In the like of Seiklus you can collect many various colored orbs, which are often hidden in secret places throughout the different worlds. There are many unique items and treasures waiting to be found, and these items will help you to explore further and uncover more of the world. The game also contains many different creatures... some will find you to be a nuisance, while others are in need of a helping hand.

a work-in-progress Demo is available :)

#4675873 The replayability of speed runner objectives

Posted by orange08 on 16 October 2014 - 07:13 PM

I don't think I would consider it full-fledged speed-running if you're adding in elements separate from the amount of time left on the clock to make the player's final score.

Adding in the elements of death and collecting items just makes everything more complicated for the ending score.

Players will have to choose between: 1. spending time running off-course to get items OR 2. running ahead towards the finish so they can beat the level without wasting precious seconds.

The only thing that would make going after an "item" profitable is if the "item" gives you as many points as you need to make up for the points you'd be losing on the time you spent to get the item. (makes sense?)

So, as you can see, adding in the element of "Items" that add to your score makes the game no longer about "speed" running. It's about weighing your options and choosing which is better, to race to the finish, or to take detours for extra score points(coming from "items") which will ultimately make your actual level-completing speed slower in exchange for a (possibly) higher score.

It's hard for me to be totally sure of my opinion on this without knowing exactly how the game plays, but those are my 2 cents. I hope I've been helpful.
