Don't you hate how there is just, many people think 2d games are "old" "dumb" "dumber", etc., and how they focus on 3d graphics?

I was talking to one of my school friends about a game I'm planning on making, and how I was thinking of online abilities, and then told him (well, I had told him twice before, but I don't think it had sunk in) that Game Maker doesn't make games with 3d graphics, and this game was a top-down view, and then he goes on telling me "2d??!! Online?! That's gotta be stupider than Pong!!! Imagine Pong online?!!!" (Well, I personally think pong is fun and online pong would be interesting, but I guess to him thats as dumb as trying to pull out your eye balls by stuffing bread between your fingers...) And he goes on telling me about the "3d Game Creator" and how it makes games, and how its 3d, and how it uses 3d graphics, and that you can sketch a picture and it'll make a 3d graphic (I think he was mis-informed), and how you can find more 3d graphics on the web, and how it has 3d graphics......

So I procede to tell him about how many of his favorite games are essentially 2d games, except spiced up with 3d graphics. I don't know how on Earth he couldn't understand that...

Though he did seem a bit interested in Game Maker for a few seconds when I told him it had a free demo version, and the full version was only $20. But then he went back to talking about 3d game creator...

(PS: Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. I didn't see any with a tell-tale name such as General or Offtopic, so move this topic if you need to.)

Yes, some people are just plain stupid. 2d games can be just as fun as 3d games. Especially when they are made of hobby developers who doesn't have so much time, the programmer can concentrate more on the fun, and spend less time on the graphics.

Somehow, the graphics sometimes seem better. To me, the simple shapes and colors in games such as Jumper look much better than some extremely detailed 3d games.

@OEM: no, I'm not trying to advertise it. Personnally, I thought that post was going to make it look stupid.

The 3D Gamemaker is a pathetic program where NO skills are required, and half of the time, you arent even making the game

i know, i have it, and it REALLY sucks! sure its easy to make 3d games, but too easy!

Hmm, this sounds odd. I suspect you mean that you prefer good gameplay, even if the graphics are simple, more than poor gameplay even if the graphics are good.

But this shouldn't imply that GM isn't capable of having good graphics AND good gameplay. The quality of the graphics is a reflection of your skill, not GM's capability.

3D Game Creator is a very pointless program, it doesn't actually require any user input. It literally has a 'make game' button.

Game Maker is best for 2D, but to be honest DarkBasic Pro is extremely good for 3D games.

If you're making games for your own enjoyment then you don't have to worry about what other people say. But if you're making games to sell to others then it's really what they want that counts. Remember though that there's still loads of people who prefer 2D games, it just depends on the target audience you look at.

Also, the games you create with 3D Gamemaker are just as crap as the programme its self!

So KC: What your saying is Jumper looks better than Half Life 2? Or do you just mean GM games...? 2D in GM always beats out 3D GM games.

lmaosmiley.gif Talking about taking things to serious.
Some people enjoy 2d games as much as 3d games, but
theres just an other type of people that like exactly the same game
with flashy 3d games better than average 2d games.
Well 3d is cooler, but I still think I can like a 2d game better than a 3d one.

I've always loved 2D games, they've been a part of my gaming life for my whole...um...life.

I think everyone agrees that 3D does absolutely rock, but I think there should always be a Gameboy(with 2D graphics).

Maybe the kids of today think that "2D SUCKS!! 2D GAMES SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111" and they think that they are 1337 but even if a game isn't 3D, it doesn't mean that it sucks. 2D games can be sometimes better than 3D games, like others have said here.
My "game list" has over 30 3D games, I like them, but there are many good 2D games too. (Like Jumper, Virus Buster and others.) Will they never learn?

I like 3d games more though. In fact I am going to by 3d game rendering stuff and start making 3d games. Also I am gettting the reg version of gamemaker so I can make better 2d games.
Kids will learn one day that some 2d games can be better than 3d games.

I think that any 2D or 3D game can be good, as long as it has good gameplay.

Game 1: Called PearStair, where all there is, is a pair and a stair rendered with the top-of-the-line graphics rendering system, and you just move the pair up and down the stair the whole game. It has the best graphics out of any game out there.

Game 2: In 4 shades of gray, in a 320x300 pixel screen, you control a warrior trying to get to the castle and claim the treasure, while avoiding many enemies and traps.

Now, tell me, which one would be better to play?
