Two weeks downtime? Really didn't expect to it be that long, but whatever. It's unfortunate that it forces the jam to move... But I'm sure it will all end up being fantastic. It kinda feels like a fresh start would actually help me get more active on the forums.

Not sure if we can plug alternative websites but I do frequent the Gamemaker community on Reddit. Maybe that'll be sufficient for an alternative site to use for two weeks? Granted it's not organized at all and mostly filled with noob questions.

Anyways, excited to join the new community as a new indie dev.

also with the new forum can yoyo host the images and files direct, i used to do that with my old forum as it stops all the broken links from ruining the threads that contain them.

Well, Homestead will have a bunch of new content by then, it's new topic will be more enticing on the new forum.

Of course, I'll have died from internet withdraw syndrome by then...

Lukan Corpseweaver will have to post the topic for me.

I've been working on a game for a while and was hoping to get a demo up on the forums soon. Now that this site is getting a reboot I'm just going to do exactly that and hopefully have an acceptable demo by then. The extra time can be used to add a bit of polishing.

How exciting that the Alpha project forum page will no longer be a desolate land filled with abandoned projects. Well... at least for year.

Actually i suspect the YYG dudes calculated the extra time just in case something goes wrong. For that - two weeks is a pretty good time to build something nice for the community and its needs in the future.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as the forums can be accessed through the yoyogames website, and it is not rubbish, then it shouldn't be a problem.

I know some people are stubborn and refuse to change. Some will protest against the new forums and even leave. I saw it happen once before on another website that was around a long time. Some of the mods quit because they didn't want to continue because reasons. Yet it gave an opportunity to pump new blood into the administration team. I ended up as a mod but I don't think I'll do that again.

Guys - it's UP TO 2 weeks.... this (I hope!!!!) is the outside estimate.

We're having to install and configure some new software, and the DB re-import for the archive could take days. But keep an eye on Twitter and we'll try and give regular updates on how it's all going.

As to layout... it's going to be quite different. We'll keep that as a surprise though :)

guess that means... gms 2.0 announcement confirmed for new forum release date??

I am sad to leave my post count which has climbed significantly in the past few months... As well as my 2005 registration date that cannot be outdone by  many active members. However, I am happy about the move to Xenforo, as it is a very nice forum software. I look forward to the restructuring of the forums as well.

I noted that the post says all topics will be visible, although we won't be able to log in. May I tack on that the "Find content" feature should be extended to guests without logging in. (You can get to this from a user's profile to look up all the topics/posts they've made.)

Wait!? This forum will be down for 2 weeks? A little confused here. Will it not be active until the switch is made?

Sorry no. It's going to be on the same physical machine, and it needs to be wiped and reinstalled.

Why not just set up a new server and configure it at ease and leave the old one running until it's lock-down-and-switch time? The old server can then continue as a searchable archive (this saves you setting up the archive on another server). You'll just need to make a DNS change to make the URL point to the new server.

Or are you planning to host both the archive and the new forum on the new server?

I'm not sure how thorough the wipe is, but given the breaches the server has endured you don't want to run the risk of exposing your new forum to any leaks that you have not yet discovered. A new server is the cleanest start.

Me too. Reasons why I don't like it:

  • People pretend they don't care about rep but they obsess over it
  • It lets a group of people stifle discussion without responding to a post, so a reasonable but unpopular idea might get shot down by downvotes and never discussed, making it hard to change peoples thinking
  • Encourages a mob mentality
  • People abuse it by downvoting because they don't like a person or because that person downvoted them

The rep system on the new forum will use the counting system of the Oksapmin people of New Guinea.  It's base-27 and uses words for 27 body parts.   Numbers start with the thumb of one hand, going up to the nose, then down the other side of the body to the pinky of the other hand.

So for example, 'One' is tip-na (thumb).  6 is dopa (wrist), 12 is nata (ear), 16 is tan-nata (ear on the other side), all the way to 27, or tan-h-th-ta (pinky on the other hand).   Then the numbers are compounded to get higher numbers.

Nobody will understand it.  But it sounds cool.

I'd rather go with the Walpiri method. They count in the following manner:

One, Two, Many, Many, Many, Many, Many...... e.t.c.

May this signature be frozen on the old GMC until the end of times. Or YoYo takes it down.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

I for one am EXCITED for the death of this current forum software! Not that I particularly hate it, but because actually yeah it's not very good at all.
But more importantly, it's been sooooooooooooo long with the saaaaaaaaaame software. It's not like this is where the GMC's roots lie. That's like, the EZBoard, and I was never a member of that!

Anyway. I'm basically just excited because another chapter of the GMC's life is coming to an end, and I'm around to see it this time.

Perhaps over-excited, but I'll let you guys judge me.

I very much agree. The community could do with a new shot of life and some change.

It'll be good to start from scratch and have a website that makes sense to the GameMaker Studio / 2 / Next era, and separates from the 5/6/7/8 era.
