Final Core

The game :

Final Core is a real time strategy / shooter game where you get to design your ships from a selection of 144 varied parts. Each part can be individually placed and rotated on your design, allowing for complex setups. Build the perfect ships to crush your opponents. Control your design in a top down shooter and fight off waves of opponents, challenging bosses and even other players in online battles. Or start a skirmish, build and manage a base while spawning an army based off of your designs.

The discussion server:

    https://discord.gg/0jQSXyWsc1MoFJKf

Download and a few screenshots :

    http://gamejolt.com/...-shooter/40277/

Gameplay by Highsight :

Currently Features :

   - Up to 8 player skirmishes with team customization.

   - A standard top down shooter against infinite waves of enemies and bosses. Modifiers come into place every few rounds.
   - 132 parts, allowing for complex and diverse ship designs.

   - 13 buildings for skirmishes, not counting multiple upgrade paths.

   - 3 ressources to manage, each acting differently.

   - Network based base-building.

   - Multiplayer pvp (global or LAN) and global persistent chat.

   - Passive online competition, defeat the best ships created by other players to claim their place.

   - A branching level up system.

Controls :

    - For skirmishes, standard RTS rules apply, everything is mouse controlled and hotkeys for base building.

    - For top down shooter mode, use WASD or ZQSD to move around and hold down the left mouse button / space to fire. Click the right mouse button to toggle strafe. 1-3 for active effects.

I'm really looking forward to any feedback/constructive criticism you might have   :)

(Should I delete the topic in Alpha now that I've put one here ?)

Sure give it a go, not sure how Wine porting works though so it might not be compatible.

If you go into the sector of assimilation at a high level, the huge number of parts spawning around the cube causes lag.  The game is well polished, the graphics for the grid are amazing (the pulsing sector), and I have no idea how you managed to do both chromatic and the pulses at the same time.  The art for the parts could use a bit more work, possibly a more detailed tech tree (describe what each item does in each tier from the store), and maybe make it possible to upgrade a part from the stash quickly (it is annoying to drag it back to the store every time.  Right click in stash for upgrade?  Upgrade tool to upgrade a part by clicking it?).  Survival arena can be improved by increasing the size, possibly procedural generation.  You can deactivate things very far away.

Can you make it that when you click to fire, the turreted destruction parts try to attack in the direction of the mouse, rather than autotarget?

I would like to make some contributions to this project.  Art maybe?  Or code?

3.5/5 stars.  I will revise that review when the upgrade system is improved and you can see what each item does in each tier, without having to buy and upgrade it.

Hi there, thank you very much for the feedback !

If you go into the sector of assimilation at a high level, the huge number of parts spawning around the cube causes lag

I have no idea how high level you went, I might need to cap the size it can reach.

The game is well polished, the graphics for the grid are amazing (the pulsing sector), and I have no idea how you managed to do both chromatic and the pulses at the same time

Thank you very much, the grid was fun to do, it's just lines in the end so not as complicated as you might think.

The art for the parts could use a bit more work

Unfortunately I'm no artist and I haven't found a way to improve the art on the parts without making them harder to distinguish when playing. I will try to see if I can touch things up though.

possibly a more detailed tech tree (describe what each item does in each tier from the store)

I thought people might appreciate the mystery of discovering new parts as they upgrade their ship, might revise it if you think it really doesn't bring anything to the game though.

maybe make it possible to upgrade a part from the stash quickly

There is already a hotkey (U), normally it should appear when hovering over the upgrade button.

Survival arena can be improved by increasing the size, possibly procedural generation

Are you sure increasing the size wouldn't simply increase travel time without changing anything else ? As for procedural generation, I'm not quite sure what you are thinking of.

Can you make it that when you click to fire, the turreted destruction parts try to attack in the direction of the mouse, rather than autotarget?

That might be trickier than expected, as some parts (Drain/Leech) will directly damage the target, whereas turreted parts will shoot towards the target. So if I change the target to be a dummy at the mouse's position for turret free-fire, it'll screw up the Drain/Leech parts. I'm sure I can try to work something out though. How do you reckon missiles should work though ? Home towards the mouse, towards the position where the mouse was when you fired, or towards the nearest ship to the mouse ? In the end, only Blaster parts would really gain anything from this, but I could add it as another paradigm the player can change with the right mouse button. In the meantime, the targeting is the nearest ship to the cursor so you can still control a bit.

I would like to make some contributions to this project.  Art maybe?  Or code?

I'm keeping this a one man project, really sorry.

3.5/5 stars.  I will revise that review when the upgrade system is improved and you can see what each item does in each tier, without having to buy and upgrade it.

I'll see if I can implement this cleanly without taking away too much from player discovery.

Thanks again for the constructive feedback !

Ok you'll be happy to know that a new version is up with a hint for the upgrade hotkey, a bigger sector and the possibility to change turret behaviours from paradigm menu.

When I said procedural generation, I meant random generation of enemies as you move around.  The longer you last, the more powerful and numerous the enemies.  You could use an "infinite arena" as the fourth arena, using this idea, or you could replace the survival arena.  Perhaps when a player makes a ship and uses it in survival, and internet is available, the ship is sent to a server with how long it lasted, and use those player ships against the player the infinite arena, or if internet is not available, and there are no cached ships, the client just uses preset ships.  You can also use the ships that lasted in the infinite arena.

Currently, I'd rate it as 4/5.

You may use my reviews on your website (if applicable).

It so happens that what you described is an aspect of the game I have been working on for a while but put on hold, basically a roguelight mode where you start from 0 and gain parts from destroyed opponents in an infinite sector, and opponents scale with you. But currently it doesn't feel fun/rewarding so I just dropped it, might push it out and see what players think of it at some point though.

I think the infinite sector should allow in-sector save/load, and that as the enemies grow more powerful and numerous, you will be forced to upgrade your own ship, in your "garage".  Only enemy level is saved for infinite sector, and the longer you last and the more enemies destroyed, the more income you get.

Aegis and Shield++ seem identical except for a small tab at the bottom.  That makes them very hard to distinguish in-game.

Also, BUMP.  This game is worth it.
