Welcome to the official GMC Jam #20 Games Topic!

Here you MUST POST YOUR GAMES to be considered for the final voting and to receive any prizes. There are some strict rules for posting in this topic and anyone who does not follow them will have their posts removed, so I strongly advise you read (and re-read!) the following before doing something you may regret later :

  • Each entry has ONE post only. It must be used to show development of your game (while the Jam is on, you may are encouraged to <EDIT> your post to update people on your progress), or the actual finished game itself.
  • A link to your game MUST be posted here before the end of the Jam to qualify for votes in the final stage. An actual topic in the Games Forum is not necessary, but bare in mind that this topic is only for games - so if you want feedback, criticism or comments on your game it is recommended that you create a WIP topic and link to that too.
  • This topic is ONLY for showcasing the games and their progress, not for discussion or any other type of post. If you wish to comment on a game, do it in the actual games topic (or in the GMC Jam discussion topic), but not here! All posts that break this rule will be deleted during the Jam. When voting begins, comments can then be made within the context of the vote in the voting topic.
  • When adding new progress blogs/screenshots to your post (via the <EDIT> button) please use the SPOILER tags to hide previous content. In this way we can keep the topic tidy and organised and people can see the progression of your game from start to finish.

A zip file will be created within a few days of the Jam finishing to facilitate the playing of all entries.
This zip will have a randomiser in it so that people play the games in a random order, so don't think that calling your game A.A.A. Aardvarks Ardent Adventures (for example) is going to get you more plays!

It is STRONGLY recommended that you create some form of "help" page in your game as some (most?) people will NOT have read your posted topic and so have no idea what controls your game has, nor how it is to be played etc etc etc... Not including this information will have a negative impact on your game so I recommend enough that you take a few extra minutes to do it.

And that's about it. I encourage each of you that is working on a game to create videos, take screenshots and generally create a developers blog in your post. Each new entry can be edited into the post while old entries can be hidden using SPOILER tags and if you wish to discuss anything Jam related, remember that we still have the Official Jam Topic, which the moderators check regularly and there you can ask questions, make suggestions or discuss entries.

1:10 AM - Alright. Time for release.

10:30 AM - Alright, got lots of fixes. First off, the final battle is now, ya know, accessible. Hizno found another game breaking glitch. Man, I'm glad I'm not doing this alone. Anyway, some other graphical changes and convenience stuff like tooltips and the like.

10:46 AM - Aaaand another release. Messed with the spawn rates for some rare enemies.

2:55 PM - Added music. Hopefully it works. I'm in class so I can't test it.

The no-gameplay-concept

So, didn't have time to make any gameplay.  Just an experiment in AI and mood.

You can move the view by positioning the cursor to the sides of the screen. Or click on the minimap to jump to that position.

The population soars to about 100, then dwindles down again.  I haven't played it long enough to see if they completely die out or if it builds back up again.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to add in any animals.  Too bad, I thought they turned out looking good.

  • FRIDAY: Had a lot of fun torturing people with the Theme reveal
  • SATURDAY: Had 2 ideas. But both are too much effort. Procrastinated. Listened to a lot of old rave music for no reason. Watched The Walking Dead Season 6 episodes 1 & 2 - nice! 
  • SUNDAY: Finally actually started on my entry. Some kinda multiple choice story thing, maybe. See how this goes...
  • MONDAY: Got bored & stopped making this after not too long yesterday. Made another game tho, that's kinda finished now. Wanna use the 4 or so hours I have free tonight to fix & add to "THE DARK" (in particular, some kinda ending) Likely will be wayyyyy too short, but no matter what, Imma throw up what I have done before deadline.

12:28PM: Well that failed. I only managed to do 10 levels but I like how I did the narration. For my first GMC jam this has been nice. I really enjoyed it and this is still only the beginning. Can't wait to see everyone else's games and I hope you like mine :)

Stage: Active development

 

Project status as of Sunday 22:34 :

 

The project is currently in the active development stage, which began at 11:47 Saturday morning. Work today began at 11:30 and results are seen. The general aesthetic of the game is vastly improved and most main mechanics have been implemented, GUI is mostly complete and currency system is completely implemented, Graphics have been completed for 4 defending towers and NPCs, 3 attacking abilities and NPCs, most base graphics and 4 goal items. Build Alpha 0.2 is live.

Friday 22:50 :

 

Concepting begins, two ideas emerge; one of the form of a turn based tower defense and rouge-lite based around stealing from a museum and protecting the museum from attack and the other a far more simple game about assembling a skeleton from left over bones and fighting another skeleton. Each are designed to have local multiplayer functionality as a possibility and to make optimum use of the theme, handicap, and hype object.

Extremely rough notes are drawn up and can be found below

The final concept is determined to be "Rob the Museum", a turn-based game with the main mechanic being switch of objective each round between stealing artifacts and defending them. Some basic plans have been drawn up, which may be uploaded if I remember to.

 

Saturday 11:47-19:17 :

 

Graphics are drawn for the GUI, the theif, one guarding NPC, the building and the title screen. Systems have been implemented on a basic level for currency and a coin toss to determine how the game begins. The dog NPC is partially functional, as is the thief and the building. The GUI is mostly non-functional and GUI setup has a bug where three instances of the "obj_dogIcon" object are created instead of one. This is contained in the following code, if you are able to diagnose the problem please PM me.

Friday 3:00 :

 

Minimum game is almost complete, only requiring a few bug fixes and final content additions. All necessary graphics complete and aesthetics have been largely upgraded. Alpha build 0.2 is currently live,with a few bugs. Help page is under construction and finishing touches are being added. Opponent for single-player matches will begin development after a rest and will be completed before any other features are added.

All graphics complete, all required features implemented with minimal bugs, final build for the jam is live. Kiwi the AI is incomplete and inoperable at this point so only multiplayer is possible.

My first game ever is finished! One-man round of applause!

I genuinely don't know if my level files will be readable on other people's machines. Included in the package are Save 1.save, Save 2.save and Save 3.save.

They have to be...somewhere! Either in the game's folder or it's %appdata% folder. Also there's a level editor explained by the included readme.txt file.

Nevermind, I've tested it and it works. Woo!

You are stuck in a cave! You need to find a way out. Be carefull as spikes and dino,s will try to make you stay down there.

If you fail, hit a spike or get eaten you will start from the start of the level exept you have no clothes on.

DevLog #1

Today i added the core gameplay. you can pickup bones, go the the next level when all the bones are gone and you can jump on mushrooms. when you hit spikes you fail.

DevLog #2

Raptors are added, they are running peacefully around waiting for you to jump in to their mounth. Now you loose your clothes when you are failing. the level is also restarted. You can now unlock levels and the levels you unlock will be automaticly saved.Game will now check if you have all bones on a level before you can leave to another level. Added particles(blood splat).

The game took about 6 hours to make all-in, but I'm actually pretty pleased with it and may go on to polish it up for mobile, as it's an ideal 5 minute time-waster and works well on touch screens... :)

After doing the GM 48 wasn't sure if I would participate but after a lot of ideas floating around the past 48 hours I have an idea.  Not sure if it will be complete but we will see. ^_^

 

So after 48 hours (some of that was very little sleep) here's my game.

 

Solar's Pet Sandbox

 

I saw a lot of people going for the dinosaur, caveman theme so I thought id try something more prehistoric.

 

Its a game where the sun is your pet and you have to create planets (simple planets as ran out of time) to keep the sun happy.

Things I didn't have time to do:

Failure and victory states.

Add some kind of step to create certain blocks.

SFX and music, not really spent enough time learning these to skills yet so other than a very large background sound that I found, but so large I left it out.

edit: found a couple of bugs with resource cost being higher than amount you actually see on the tooltip and too late to repair it, just wanted to make those who play my game aware.

Dev. Log:

Worked whole of Saturday and Sunday until 4pm, so basically 1.6days.

Features I could not get to do:

1. Single Player against PC, currently you need to player turn by turn on same mouse with another player, like original qbasic gorillas it is local co-op

2. More polish for environment, grass, falling rocks, water, etc.

3. Random events

4. More pet uses

5. More art polish (well I'm a programmer)

6. Improve performance of deforming of terrain.

 

 

Hope you enjoy this, please let me know what you think? I use to play the original QBASIC Gorillas a lot with my brother, 

this is why I remade it, since it was one of the first games which inspired me to become a games developer...
