I wanna join, at least for a small game, but my original idea "race friends 2d" seems too technically difficult for me to finish in the time I have, and my satirical idea "Carmageddon 2d" doesn't have permission on it. :/

Have a bunch of objects that follows a path? Really quick to get up and running. Not sure how to implement any fun gameplay to that, though, since racing would more or less be one-dimensional.

Just add some randomness to AI speed and maybe wavering on the path, if that's possible. I don't know paths so don't listen to me.

Two and a half years of game development taught me the joy of making something unique and unconventional. It is not good enough to make a game fun when there are way too many other freeware games that make fun their selling point.

Okay, now I've decided! I started working on a text game engine a while back, and text games are retro, so I thought why not try to finish it up and make something with it for this jam?

I'm making Taco Quest: the Interactive Fiction! ::lmao::

If my engine turns out to be even more crap than expected, I'll just do it in old-school point-and-click style instead, but I hope it turns out to be usable :)

I want to make art as similar as possible, so I created a GIF of the game window, and drew that animation by zooming in each frame. As for the terrain, I drew that by hand.

I'll use a shader to make it look more retro-ish. I'll use RGB shifting, and a surface to add noise -- probably the bar that old monitors showed, too. Is that enough to make it retro? Or, do you have some more suggestions?

Personally, I think that since you're demaking a game (rather than remaking), you should make it more retro than the original. So since 8-bit vomit was (more or less) Gameboy style, you should do it in the style of a more primitive computer than the Gameboy (like the old Atari consoles, or Game & Watch, or whatever).

The same probably goes for the spank count digits... there should be a faded out 8 drawn underneath the actual number.

I'd lessen the alpha on the faded out versions just a tad.

I'd like you guys'so opinions: does it have to be a demake in gameplay as well as graphics, or could I stick with my super-low res 16 colors, but actually make the gameplay a bit more involved.
(Because Cookie House's gameplay was already pretty distilled, so I can't make it much simpler, but I don't just want to do a clone/reskin)

IMO opinion it's fine if you make the gameplay a little bit more complicated, as long as it's somewhat realistic for the type of computers your graphics and audio are based on.

Having faced numerous difficulties with choosing the most appropriate game to demake, I have finally started again with WillO (by GameDevDan). I have made artwork for the terrain, candles, lamps, particles, and a background too. Here's what it looks like ATM:

The original game says so. :P

Anyways, I'll fix that. Also, do you have some suggestions to make the candles and lamps look better? They don't look *great* to me, either.

Edit: Just realized that both lit and lighted are correct! ;)

Devlog III

I am done with programming the main character (it's just a cluster of aqua-coloured particles) and rest of the main things -- including the terrain, cursor and a blending transition. Also, created a font.

Here's what the first level (along with the instructions) looks like:

screenshot100.png

I may make changes to the level design later when testing the game myself. The cluster of yellow-and-white particles is actually the exit. Flame of the candle is also made up of particles.

Here comes another screenshot showing the evil spirit and the moving player:

screenshot101.png

I have also made steam pipes. Steam is also actually a cluster of particles. You die if you hit steam -- a lighted candle blows off if it comes in contact with steam:

screenshot102.png

Also, I forgot to mention that the lamp also has a cluster of particles inside it:

screenshot103.png

And, here comes the counting block (read the description):

screenshot104.png

And... new kind of evil spirits (read the description there) - also a cluster of particles:

screenshot105.png

Please leave feedback!

This will probably be a slightly shortened version of Taco Quest (which was already quite short IIRC) – I'm still trying to make the engine work correctly so I won't have that much time for the actual content, especially with school on Monday.

I apologize but I won't be participating in the Jam... I spent yesterday fixing my PC but I still haven't gotten GM:S, tomorrow I'll get back at my internship so both those days are goners, plus today doesn't have enough hours left in it to manage to acquire GM:S and whip something up that I would be proud of....

But neat things are happening from what I saw!

Well yes, but this isn't a canonical "jam" per se, so I wouldn't be *too* upset.

Progress on Cookie Restaurant is going pretty well! With my limited 16 colors, it's taking a longer time to do graphics than usual, but I also think this is some of the better pixel art I've madeto date. Right now you can make dough, cook and burn cookies. I have the engine built so I can add more cookie recipes and more employees at will (right now I only have the original muppet guy).
I hoping to expand it beyond the original scope, but we'll see how it goes. My #1 priority is to keep that weird addictive factor from the original game.

Keep the old music and I think you'll be fine.

- The above is my personal opinion and in no way representative of Yoyogames or the GMC, except when explicitly stated -

Here's a screenie of a lil something. There's no way I'll be able to make anything playable in what little time I have but it looks nice. :)
