We got the main menu done! It does have speedchuck singing too, but we'll save that one for later! :P

You tell that to me? I had an idea and I didn't know how to do it, and today that I wanted to try something I woke up with a lack of sleep and a headache that didn't help at all.

 

Now I have nothing to enter :C

I keep not being to allocate a vertex buffer of size XXX, or something like that. I really don't think I'm maxing out the system's drawing capacity. I'm in D3D and am drawing about 40 cubes and a long floor every step. Anyone know what might cause this?

You're not allocating a vertex buffer every step, are you? (Even then it should take some time before you max out due to vertex buffers...)

I'm just drawing in 3D. I never touch the buffers by hand. I haven't even used any surfaces in this game. Just the built-in d3d functions.

Aw man, I haven't joined a Jam in so long. Our game is defiinitely making progress. Not much is done in terms of graphics, which is why there aren't many screenshots yet. We're going for action AND strategy... there's a depth to the game that goes farther than just explosions and missiles. Hopefully it won't get overlooked. :)

Glad to hear that, it's one of my main sources of inspiration for this game :3

(The other being Artilerry F from the single-button Yoyo contest)

Oh, and here's a crappy ASCII map of all the rooms I have so far. (The game actually uses this map to figure out how rooms are connected, it's a really fun system :D)

My extremely incomplete, artsy game looks alright but sounds weird and is about as fun as a cardboard box...

 

I like how everyone, myself included, is writing about how bad their game is and then you have people like Lukasmah or competent game entries like Yal's.

Side note: drew the portraits yet again but this time I got convinced with the results, posting screenshot later...
Now the main problem... dialog scenes aren't looking that good and I can't think of a proper dialog...

I've had no time to work on my "game" today, and I won't tomorrow. So I don't have any gameplay, and I'm going to have pull out :( I'm genuinely gutted to not be entering two Jams on the trot now- but as always there's some great looking stuff coming through and I'm looking forward to trying as many as I can :)

Alright. I'm debating following the handicap. On the one hand, I want to. But on the other hand, having strange mouth noises in place of music would sort of ruin the relaxing puzzle atmosphere.

So today was mostly spent trying to think of something else to do with what I have since what I wanted to do just didn't pan out (which isn't a big issue, after all, that's the point of game jams, to experiment with ideas that may or may not work out in practice). What I'm going for now is hardly revolutionary but it might be a neat little thing to spend five minutes with and go "oh, that's kinda neat". So, this thing requires text rendering (and text rendering is pretty good to have either way) so I've had to implement that (I can't use Game Maker to render on top of the 3D engine, otherwise I could have simply done that). So far I've implemented some basic truetype rendering (though most of the work is done by stb_truetype) but it's pretty hardcoded right now (uses "C:\Windows\Fonts\Times.ttf" rather than a configurable font).

It's also far from optimised. And it linebreaks per character, not per word.

I'm meeting with my on-campus sound guy to take care of the handicap tonight.

I'm looking forward to having my voice recorded, mapped to a keyboard, and then fruitlessly trying to play on said keyboard using my teeth.

You have to make the audio with your mouth after all, right?

Restarted mine, the gameplay wasn't fun and my placeholder sprites looked awful. -_-

 

I have another idea, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to get it working in a day as it would need basic AI.

Gwosh, I can't believe myself... I'm starting to make the final boss now :D

I guess doing stuff the NES way was a good design decision, it's a lot easier to work when you don't have to polish graphics for hours and can make all effects only a bare minimum... more time for the actual game this way.

I have bad news: I'm quitting soon. I am going to post what I have done anyways but I've lost all hope of getting my game to work right. I plan to add one last thing before calling it a day. I might also make a joke game too.

That's right. Nut a Joke Gaem is back. Guide Shadow Bat through 4 action packed levels, fight dangerous enemies and follow an interesting story as the cold war turns hot around you.

Hi, I made the soundtrack for 11clock's ByteStack. It is an intense song, but it is also a silly one. The samples of the song were all made with my voice (that does include the one that sounds like an organ). I had a lot of fun making this song. lol

So I'm recording sound effects now and making an explosion effect is quite difficult, it sounds more like a vacuum cleaner dying.
