You guys have really low standards if you think that's cool ;) check out Smooth McGroove, he's great at a capella versions of video game music! And dat sexy beard/hair combo, too.

 

EDIT: Also, hte game is supposed to be happy/funny, not horror. DAMMIT MOUTH!

 

EDIT2: I'l go experiment some more, with less reverb this time.

Devlog 2: Normal Potato

 

So I've spent quite some time learning how to use xNormal (it's not hard). 1108 faces potato vs. 172 faces potato with normal map. Obviously the edges are very visible, as is usual per normal maps, but I don't exactly have time to implement tesselation. (I could also have, you know, not killed quite that many faces, but whatever.)

Now the question is how the heck this potato is going to fit into my game. Maybe I'll just sprinkle some around the map.

Errr... I missed a lot again, but I'm back!!
Our super coool team is making a RPG named Potatomon, where you fight against people around with your POKEMONZZ! We're up with a lot of stuff, and here's a screenshot taken some hours ago (believe me we've done more than that):

My current game idea sort of tries to implement two interpretations of the theme at the same time, the Cold War and war in the cold. I'll make a post in the games topic once I have a clearer image of what exactly I'm doing.

He and Nocturne are already on the track, but as monsters (don't kill me, pls). They are too cold, and I had to include them in the game. ColdNocturneAndRoy must make anyone win the Jaem! :whistle:

Devlog 3: Foliage Schmoliage

 

So, what's the most important in a game in which you're out in the woods? Potatoes? No, trees! ... So, I didn't do trees first, I did ground vegetation because I'm an idiot. Oh well.

 

The plants in the game are the standard, old, ugly way of a transparent texture applied to two squares (well, they're technically one mesh to reduce draw calls). Here's a plant as seen from above:

So, yeah, still pretty ugly but it might be improved by good anti-aliasing and proper lighting and stuff. Maybe. I also don't do proper alpha-sorting cause gosh-darns its that's a lot of work.

 

The real solution would obviously be to use level of detail with proper models when up close and flat textures when looked at far away, but then I'd need to be some kind of designer or something.

 

Optimisation = fun

So with a large world this will be a lot of vegetation = lots of draw calls. That's bad. One solution is to use frustum culling, which means only models which are actually visible are rendered. This can be further sped up for static geometry using a quad tree. By dividing the map into segments, we first check if a segment is visible, and only then do we check every individual model in that segment. If the segment isn't visible, then obviously neither are any of the models in the segment and so we can discard all of them immediately.

 

But rendering "lots" of (ugly) vegetation can still be demanding on some systems so I have a configurable drawing distance where vegetation outside the drawing distance simply aren't drawn. The problem with this is "pop-in": plants suddenly spawn in and out of existence in a very jarring way. The solution is to fade the plants in and out.

 

 

Side-note: You can apply as many effects as you like to your voice, right?

Devlog 4: Smooth Moves Potatoes

 

So... jaggies. We all hate them*, but what to do about them? Well, anti-alias them, dummy! The problem is that A: anti-aliasing is usually expensive, B: you "can't" use MSAA when using deferred rendering, which I am. Solution: FXAA. FXAA is a post-process anti-aliasing technique that's incredibly fast (for AA, anyhow), works for deferred rendering and is incredibly easy to implement. So I did.

Only problem is FXAA looks like crap. But you can't have everything in life. I'd love to implement the much nicer but somewhat more expensive (3-pass instead of 1-pass) SMAA but I certainly don't have time for that and I don't think it quite fits into my post-processing pipeline (2 ping-pong framebuffers).

 

 

* Just kidding, there're indie developers here. Indie developers love visible pixels.

Just brain-storming some game ideas so far.

 

Fahrenheit vs. Celsius -- a battle/war game, or maybe a racing game

Hot vs. Cold -- about falling icicles, you must melt them before they detach and drop on you

Superfluid -- about rolling blobs of helium, or maybe blobs where you're stuck inside.

Wave of Ice -- about water waves that freeze at certain times, so you either float or slide.

Ice Tentacles -- waving / moving tentacles do stuff...

 

Thinking about combining the tentacles and the blobs idea.  Gameplay involves controling the tentacles to stab / melt the frozen blobs of helium... or something.

That sounds the best of those ideas. I'd surely like to see something like that. As a challenge, you may cause the player to freeze if he is inside the wait. Good idea(s).

I'm kinda sad that I won't have much time to make a game. I really want to join this one. Both the theme and the handicap seem interesting, and I have various ideas that I just won't have the time to implement. :(

 

I feel your pain. My idea is too ambitious for the time I have so I'm going to have to cut major corners or submit an unfinished game.

 

I just spent half an hour trying to open a door. Then I realized there was a wall in the way and felt like an idiot. YAY!

 

 

Believe it or not, something like this happens in my jam game except I decided this 11 hours ago.

Devlog 1:

Intro: An american spy who can control the time flow with a experimental device and has to retrieve some information from the enemy base. 

 

(Day zero) Wrote about 60% of the game's gameplay which includes, time control, movement, attacking, patrol, shooting, alarm. Started to work in procedural generated levels.

I just thought of making a puzzle game out of it, instead of a "snow fight simulator" based on strategy. This way I won't need to code the AI.

 

But I dunno what gameplay could I use for this puzzles...

Bleeeh, Studio pls... whenever I add a new object, my metroidvania savefile is broken and I have to start anew. Gotta add in an infinite money cheat.

Devlog 2: Normal Potato

 

So I've spent quite some time learning how to use xNormal (it's not hard). 1108 faces potato vs. 172 faces potato with normal map. Obviously the edges are very visible, as is usual per normal maps, but I don't exactly have time to implement tesselation. (I could also have, you know, not killed quite that many faces, but whatever.)

 

 

Now the question is how the heck this potato is going to fit into my game. Maybe I'll just sprinkle some around the map.

 

Simple. Build giant potato farms all over the place, or, a kingdom where giants live in potato houses, huts and castles. Majestic!

Well, no screens yet, but i have controls done and I swear to fricken god I am in the midst of making the biggest damn sprite I've ever made... need to break that bad boy into tiles...

...a LOT of tiles... why do I do these things to myself?

Just a little thing I discovered:

 

If you consistently apply the SHARPEN effect to your ALL your sprites, they actually look cool. Just don't overdo it though.
