Welcome, Game Maker Community! This is Paper Mario 3D Land, and as the name implies it combines the gameplay mechanics of Super Mario 3D Land with the charming visuals of the Paper Mario series. Run and jump through 16 unique levels from start to finish through gorgeous landscapes filled with all kinds of obstacles. Not only does this game feature never before seen mechanics from the Mario franchise, but it also offers a wide variety of new stuff, including never before seen power-ups.

Power-Ups

The Super Dandelion lets Mario transform into a flower, granting him the ability to perform a minor doublejump in mid-air as well as hover to ground safely. Not only does this power-up make all kinds of traps easier to deal with by giving you extra air time, but it also enables you to take several small and maybe not so small shortcuts.

Dress up as a mole and dig through the floor! Using this power-up you can bypass several hazards and access otherwise inaccessible areas. While performing the digging attack your attack power also increases so it becomes easier to take out tougher enemies. While underground enemies also won't notice and take chase of you.

These delicious cupcakes will temporarily increase Mario's stats. The red one boosts Mario's attack power, whereas the blue one raises Mario's defense.

I'm not sure what controller you used to test the game, but with my 360 controller, Confirm/Jump is B. This makes it kind of annoying to use in conjunction with the Run button, which is X. Apart from that, I am liking the game so far.

I can't believe it weights only 28mo compressed. That game's a masterpiece of programming.

I just think the camera is following the character too "strictly", I would say, for a 3D game. On long play session, it could be causing eyestrain to some people (like me). Yet, the solution is simple : you could just add a little delay on the camera, when following your character, and a smooth displacement to overtake Mario.

Despite that, it's a very good game. I never thought I would see a Mario fangame with an original gameplay. The level design is fine-cut, it's beautiful, and, technically a masterpiece. Great job.

This was pretty great. My only complaints I really have is that Mario walks way too slowly and running doesn't help all that much.

Also, I was easily able to just run past all of the enemies since none of them really went after me.

I think you should re-use this engine for an original project. This game looked and played really smoothly and I really loved some of the 3D projections.

Seems pretty cool and fairly well-crafted, but if you haven't added many effects since the video, the game lacks polish. I'm downloading and testing now, this seems pretty fun in either case!

EDIT:

OK, it looks a lot better in motion. Enemies look a bit stiff and doesn't really try to chase you, but the game is pretty fun nonetheless. The levels are a bit long for my taste, and there's a bunch of places where the designs are a bit evil...

  • In world 1-2, the lifts go up and up forever... and there's nothing there. I was a bit disappointed.
  • A bit later, there's a big ?-block on top of a really small platform. The platform is a bit on the narrow side for not being a hazard.
  • The perspective makes the very final icy platform in Icy Incline look closer to the screen than it is.

Also, can you enter pipes or are they decorational only?

Anyway, really fun game at a closer look! Some animations are a bit clunky (Mario needs a fireball-chucking animation, and it would be nice if enemies seemed to respond to damage by budging or something, or sport their OUCH sprite) but it looks a lot better in motion.

Here's the (late) official release trailer of PM3DL! Made by yours truly. (Might wanna edit your first post, Coco.)

That game's a masterpiece of programming.

Only from the outside. It's similar to humans in that regard: You don't want to see it from the inside. Brr. :P

<error>

Apparently, this can be fixed by turning up the frameskipping. Or so Coco said when I mentioned it to him. Not really a solution and more of a workaround, but it apparently works. :)

Who permitted you to snoop around in my source code? Besides, the code is neatly organized and tidy. Most of the time, anyway.

Opinions are opinions. I personally despise the game due to its seemingly unlimited amount of gameplay design flaws. (Seriously, I can tear this game to shreads with my criticism if I chose to.)

Based on the trailer of this fangame, the level design looks very interesting and fun. Can't wait to try it out.

The gamepad support is garbage. You seriously expect us to play a 3D platformer with a DPAD? Also, why is B the jump/select button?

I request button configurations for gamepads, and support for analogue.

Plus, a little of self-promotion: do you need an italian translator (for any game, not only this one) by any chance?

I'd say its quite strange how you rate this game 5/5 while the download link has been offline for some time.

Ontopic: Does this mean that all the hard work this guy has done is deemed useless by this copyright claim? That would be a total shame!

There is no reason to make a fan game of mario, if you make a mario game that is crap, your download will be allowed, but if you make a fan game that's not utter crap, nintendo will remove the download, thus removing all incentive to make quality fan games. As it stands, this post is in violation of the rules until she puts in a link to a functioning download, so I hope she gets this done in a timely manner, because I am feeling rather lethargic and want to play and review the game.
