Welcome to the official GMC Jam #15 Voting Topic!

This topic is where you can post your reviews and final votes in the GMCJam. The rules, as always, are listed below for those new members that are participating for the first time and we recommend that you read them before making any posts. For those veterans out there, skip the rules as nothing has changed since previous jams, and "START VOTING"!

Voting Template
You don't have to use this, but it makes my life a lot easier if you do, so please consider adding the following template to your post, even if you wish to add mini-reviews and images for your chosen games.

My votes go to

  • name of the game - author
  • name of the game - author
  • name of the game - author
  • etc...
Best Use Of Theme - author
Best Use Of Handicap - author
Best Presentation - author
Best Devblog - author

Voting Rules
You may vote for as many (or as few) games as you wish in order of preference, with 1 being the winner and all subsequent games being runners up, but please vote for at least three! The zip file that is created for the Jam comes with a game "randomiser" so that the order you play the games in does not depend on their title or creator, so we ask that you please use it!

Apart from the voting you are encouraged to post a mini-review of the winning game (and any others you feel deserve it) explaining what you liked/disliked and why you think it deserves to win... Remember, this is a Community Jam and so feedback from the community is all important! We want to know what you think! Apart from that there are a few more rules to stick to...
  • Voting will last approximately 15 days from Tuesday 29th July to Wednesday 13th August.
  • Please post your votes FIRST, before any other text or images, and preferably using the above template.
  • Only ONE post per person (this is flexible but you MUST PM me for permission first). Any further conversation about a given game can be held in the Jam topic or in the topic of the game itself (if it has one). Any posts breaking this rule will be removed.
  • Your top three games MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A SHORT REVIEW and posts with no reviews of at least the top three games will be considered <void> at the time of counting.
  • If you are reviewing the games over the course of the 15 day voting period, use the <EDIT> button to add to your post, rather than post twice.Constructive criticism is fine, but comments like "This game sucks" will not be tolerated... so think before commenting! If your reviews are extensive or use images, please encase them in [spoiler] tags.
  • Please vote for at least YOUR TOP THREE GAMES, although you can vote for as many as you like (and every vote DOES count!) Please also vote for "Best Use of Theme", "Best Use Of Handicap" , "Best Presentation" and "Best DevBlog"
  • NO talk of cheating in the Jam topics please. If anyone has any doubts about a post or a vote, then please REPORT the post or PM me with your thoughts and action will be taken accordingly.
  • For all votes, including the Best Ofs, be sure to include BOTH the game name AND the author name.
So that's it I think... Take your time to play as many games as possible, but don't feel pressured to play them all, and we shall see you all here again in fifteen days time to see who has the honour of being the Jam winner this time around!

Good luck to everybody and thank you all so much for participating!!!!

PLEASE NOTE Not all information here is guaranteed to be correct, Dan's in neverland so I'm making this topic in lieu of his absence.

The secret word was MINIONS, by the way!

Here you can see a fancy spreadsheet describing various factors I paid attention to during playing a game. Also, while there's a column related to the use of secret word, I didn't really take it into account during voting. Also, some information there might be inaccurate, as I don't remember the Jam games exactly; so if you think your game was mistreated, send me a PM or so.
Also, for a more detailed albeit rather chaotic, live-written feedback, check the doc HERE.

(I totally didn't rip the template of my previous Jam voting post, not at all~!)

Hmm... came up with a kind of rating system to keep things organized but it's very loose. Concept, execution, bonuses for other stuff. I'll try to avoid viewing other's reviews to maintain maximum neutrality.
No videos this time, enjoy the reviews! (And don't be offended because I love all of you.)

I plan to play all the games and will write as much as I am driven to for any given game.  Maybe a sentence, maybe a novel.  My rough guidelines are as follows:
1. It's taken as read that these are all Jam games, so made in MAX 72 hours development.  That said, I will probably be fairly blunt in my reviews at times, as much for brevity as harshness.
2. I'm not using any strict score system, I'm taking each game as a whole and factoring in things like the theme and handicap, as well as graphics, sound and playability obviously.
3. I'm going to review them all, then cast my final votes.
Grats and kudos to all those who entered!

Yal's Poisonous Reviews
(as in, I'm Gonna Chew Your Head Off: the Forum Post, part XIV)
So here's how things are rated. Games get scored in the following areas:
VISUALS:                          /3 How good the game looks. 3 is "PERFECT", 2 is "GOOD", 1 is "ACCEPTABLE" and 0 is... err, you get it.
AUDIO:                            /3 How good the game sounds.
GAMEPLAY:                         /3 How enjoyable the game is.
STORY:                            /3 How enjoyable the cutscenes are.
ADDICTION:                        /3 How hard the game was to quit.
THEME USAGE:                      /2 Whether used well, token, or not at all.
HANDICAP USAGE:                   /1 Whether used.
Comments are also added to specify my thoughts. Average scores should end up around 9 points, so don't get too sad if you get a low rating.
2 bonus points are handed out for First Impression and Lasting Impression (if those are positive, that is).
I base my votes on the total review score of the games (using personal bias as a tiebreaker if needed).

  1. Fort Bloks by Diptoman (13½ pts!)
  2. Atomism by UKDutyPaid (9½ pts)
  3. Disperspective by 11clock (9 pts)
  4. Vaqueros Del Oeste by The ch8t (8 pts)
  5. Tower's Soul Is You by XNyo (8 pts)
  6. ZGJIHJE by Goinbatty (8 pts)
  7. Must Go Up by 2DCube (7½ pts)
  8. Tie by Snail Man (7½ pts)
  9. Confidence Builder by Dangerous_Dave (7 pts)
  10. Poker Defense by Lolligirl and TheSnidr (6½ pts)
  11. A Crafty Escape by TehPilot (6½ pts)
  12. Purple Block Space by Poizen (6 pts)
  13. Cube 3X by Marsiic (5 pts)
  14. Tower Beat Down by Speedchuck (4½ points)
  15. Engineering Survival by The Legend (3 pts)
  16. Castle Steward by Golden Indie Games (2 pts)
  17. Octopus Of Happiness by Kepons (1 pt)
  18. Bash n' Crash by Misu - didn't boot
  19. Building Peacefuilly by bksonic (0 pts)

Actual reviews follow:

More reviews follow in another post because of technical reasons (this post got cut off because of exceeding some stupid limit). If your game is in my votes but not in the reviews above, check the other part of the list.

I'll attempt to review the games.

It's highly improbable that I'll review all of them, but I will try, so here you'll find...

GV's Useless and Short Reviews!

Attention! I wasn't able to get some free time, so here's my top-3 of the games I liked more of the games I was able to review. I'm doing just a top-3 for respect towards the non-reviewed games. I will try as hard as I can to review the remaining games but I probably wont go further than this (43 games).

Top 3:
1. Disperspective by 11clock
2. Must Go Up by 2DCube
3. Fort Bloks by Diptoman

Reviews in playing order (43/56):

Games that didn't work:

Notice that I'll probably join the Game Jolt GameBoy Jam, between the 1st and the 10th of August, which might slow down the review process a lot. Also, there are some religious festivities here, and that might slow it down even more.

Games Not Reviewed

Review Format

It does make my life a lot easier if I use a numerical scoring system for the games I play, so here it is. Each category, unless otherwise stated, is rated from 0 to 5.
Gameplay - Is your game fun to play? Did it entertain me for long?
Interface - Are the menus easy to navigate? Are the instructions simple and accessible?
Graphics - How does the game look and feel?
Audio - Does the game sound good?
Story - Was there a plot? Did it surprise or entertain me thoroughly?
Theme - Did you game involve building? Did you use the things you built? Could I tell?
Handicap (0-3) - Was your game a platformer? Did it have platformer-esque elements?
Secret Word (0-2) - Did your game have minions?
Balance - Was the game well balanced? Was it too hard? Too easy?
Opinion (0-10) - Did I personally enjoy your game?
Penalties - Any flaws or major bugs I find in your game will subtract a few points. If there are game breaking bugs that prohibit me from playing, your game won't be scored and will be listed among the broken games.
Additionally, I'll leave a small comment detailing the most memorable parts of your game for me. Please note that I am incredibly blunt when I review. The very fact that you completed a game in 72 hours shows that you are indeed a skilled developer, so don't for a moment let my reviews deter you from doing what you love. Additionally, the game with the highest score is not necessarily the game that I will be voting for. I will take personal opinion into account and may vote for a different game.

I'll be playing the games in a random order as determined by the zip randomizer program. I will try to play all games, but depending on time I may or may not be able to finish. If you would like me to play and review your game sooner, feel free to message me.

My votes go to:

How I did this:

The spreadsheet (with detailed ratings and comments) was last updated Aug 11 @ 11:18 UTC to update Build and fight -- whose handicap usage I had accidentally marked at 2 instead of 4, increasing its score by 2, bumping it up 2 ranks! (Also, hours before, I updated Dolls of Steel -- revising the review, which increased its handicap and total scores by 1! -- and Bash n' Crash -- whose handicap usage I had also accidentally marked at 2 instead of 4, increasing its score by 2, bumping it up 2 ranks into a tie with Booty Trap!)

If you scored poorly, either overall or in a single category, please take my comments as constructive criticism for how to improve in the future -- or as acknowledgement of "this is just the way it is, knowing that time was limited" -- and not as a desire to simply be harsh. I'm often being blunt and to-the-point in my reviewing because my written details are intricately linked with my voting -- and the voting's on a time limit, too! $8^ o $¦^ b

I'm finished! I hope to have learned from my formatting (and reformatting and decision to stop reformatting) in this post in order to format more efficiently (for me to write and you to read!) next time. $:^ ] If you'd like me to look at your game for whatever reason -- such as I didn't get to review yours or you improve yours in the future -- just let me know after the Jam voting finishes (like, tomorrow, ha,) and I'll get back to you when I can. It's been fun! $:^ }

2. Purple Block Space by poizen

3. Cobus by faisialloo

4. Atomism by UKDutyPaid

5. Poker Defense by Lolligirl and theSnidr

6. ZGJIDHJE by Goinbatty

Games score high for me when they incorporate interesting or fresh ideas. Fitting well with the theme is important for me too.

Some games I didn't review because of a suspicious installer (that didn't work): Cubi, and some just because I didn't have time to do all, but I reviewed the games I liked most. Sorry if your game isn't in the list, PM me if you want an opinion later.

Best Use of Restrictions

Fort Bloks by Diptoman

Best Presentation

Simov by nacho_chicken

Best newcomer

I don't know who are newcomers other than myself...

You can pick the highest scoring newcomer game on my top 15 if you want a vote.

As I said on the discussion board, I'm not an expert game player or reviewer.  My final votes are completely dependant on my personal tastes and/or what I had the most fun with. That may not sit well with some, but they'll just have to live with it.

Hello everybody, as you may remember, I like to post giant walls of text for requested reviews... unfortunately I'm unable to do that this time. I'm going to play every entry and post short reviews of my top ~5-10 games. PM me if you'd like me to play your game first or have anything you want me to know beforehand (I haven't looked at the games topic).

Wow votes are slim right now! I'll do my part although I'll be honest I really don't feel like voting for ALL of them this time. But I've got 9 games that really stood out to me that I'm going to do another run through on them and vote on my favorites out of those.

1st place goes to...

Booty Trap by Jack Oatley

2nd place goes to...

Must Go Up by 2Dcube

3rd place goes to...

Colony by nvrogers

Honorable Mention (4th place) goes to...

Cobus by faissialoo

Best Use Of Theme - Must Go Up by 2Dcube

Best Use of Secret Word - Confidence Builder by Dangerous_Dave

I did not play all of the entries. To those whose games I did play, great work!

I'm reviewing games just to make notes for myself. The votes will be in before time tuns out.
Bridges: The Game
This is a good, engaging game. The game brings you into the gameplay smoothly. And the dialogue adds a nice touch. 7/10

Duel of Gears

I like the ricochet mechanic. The upgrading feature is a good addition to the game. It was pretty fun, but the computer AI could be better, and it should adapted to allow a better learning curve. 7/10

Poker Defense

The idea is interesting, and I like it because it combines two odd topics: card game strategy and action. The art style is bright and pleasing. 6/10

I was initially unimpressed because the idea and mechanics (futuristic spaceman shooter) seemed too common. But it's fun and has good variation. The boss fits in well. Hey, there was even a hint of Antichamber paradox in here. :P I noticed a smooth progression in the learning curve--I could see how you paid attention to that. 7/10

Calgos' Battle

It's a simple game with strategy. Really, the art style presents the package very well, and at first I wondered how you got so much done in 72 hours. However the gameplay isn't complex. Simple, and yet solid. 6/10

The controls took some learning at first; maybe that's just because I don't play isometric games. The character-modifying feature adds an inventive to keep playing and get coins. It got suddenly much more difficult at like level 4, but that doesn't subtract much from the score. This is a solid game overall. 7/10

A firefighting game is quite a concept. Especially when, part way through the levels, you found out some dunces used chocolate and pies to make their houses. No wonder they caught on fire. The click-people-to-make-them-run mechanic was a welcomed and unique idea. Overall, it was decent. 6/10

Booty Trap

A surprsingly good game made in just 72 hours! It's fast-paced and has tight controls. I enjoyed breaking objects to collect pieces to build weapons (but I wasn't able to build certain tools for some reason). 9/10

I didn't know how to win at first, but then I figured it out. A tutorial would be good. The idea of shooting out charged electrons to build atoms is clever. Could win for best theme idea. 6/10

Must Go Up

It was fun to control the wobbly ship one thruster at a time. This is a polished game. The ship customizing feature is extra fun and allows for creativity, which I like. You may want to take this one farther than the GMC Jam! 8/10

Confidence Builder

Building blocks is too plain an idea to get points from me. But the high-score feature adds competitive flavor to the game, so that's good. How you included every possible secret word in the game...that deserves an amusing smirk. Lol :D 4/10

Things to know about my reviews:
-These reviews are only my opinion, if you liked a game or disliked a game more, then too bad
-I review games at random but because I don't have time to review all the games, those who request a review are reviewed first
-I give out ribbons for those who do really good in a subject or really bad, also for simply standing out in a notable way
-I'll try to finish your game and I'll say so if I don't
-I do consider theme and handicap even if I don't write about it directly
-My reviews are really long so be prepared
-I may seem supercilious in the harshness of my reviews but remember that I'm doing it for constructive criticism

Two and a half years of game development taught me the joy of making something unique and unconventional. It is not good enough to make a game fun when there are way too many other freeware games that make fun their selling point.

Video reviews are up.  One more is coming sometime this week or next week.
1st-Tie-Snail man
I was playing it for quite some time.  Has lots in it.
Probably the most unique game here.  Really works with the handicap (that's right, the handicap).

3rd-Plodolps-TerraFried Sheep
Fun gameplay, good graphics. Polished feel for 72 hours.

I liked the game overall. Only problem was I had a hard time selecting diagonal stuff, and I got a fatal error.
5th-Simov-Nacho chicken
Looks nice.  The backtracking is real.  Didn't get far enough to enjoy the story.

6th-Booty Trap-Jack Oatley
Those trees obscure everything. I pranced about the entire level searching for one measly spider. An enemy indicator of where the offscreen enemies are would be nice.
7th-Shattered Rocket-Yal

Although good, if I made one mistake it would take me a minute or more just to do the same thing over again. The game was simply too slow to be enjoyable in the event of failure.

9th-In the year 2000-Auctor
Best use of restriction-Disperspective-11clock
Best presentation-Forbloks-Diptoman
Best newcomer-Nacho Chicken

Getting a bit of a late start this time... Over the next few days I'll try to finish as many as I can (hopefully all of them... I've got no other plans)

Anyway, it's the same idea with my reviews as before - games are scored on Graphics, Sound/Music, Gameplay, Story, Polish, and Theme/Handicap out of 60.
Graphics: how nice they look, cohesiveness, originality
Sound: quality, how well they work with the game
Music: how well it fits, repetitiveness/irritating or sound nice
Gameplay: how fun, well balanced difficulty
Story: balanced towards how much it needs a story, setting, explanation of what's happening
Polish: bugs, how hard it looks like you worked on it
Theme: build and use - looking for building things and using them actively
Handicap: not a platformer
This time around, with the Secret Word there are potential bonus points for your use of minions in the game.
Ties in score are settled by my personal opinion.

Good work to all who submitted games. I know how difficult it can be.
Hopefully I'll be able to participate again soon... I've been out of town for both of the last two.

11clock's Reviews

A few notes before you see my reviews. Instead of using the 5 star system that most people use, I use a simple 3 star system. I'll judge based on the following categories: Gameplay, Polish, Audio, Theme, Handicap. Each star adds a certain amount of points to the total score, depending on the category. How much each star is worth is listed below.

Gameplay Star: 3 Points (Maximum Points: 9)
Gameplay is the fun factor, level design, and use of mechanics.

Polish Star: 2 Points (Maximum Points: 6)
Polish is the neatness of the game, the feel of the game, and the lack of bugs and glitches.

Audio Star: 2 Points (Maximum Points: 6)

How nice sounding the music and sounds are and how well they fit with the game. I think that no audio is still better than bad audio, so no audio gets 1 star while bad audio gets 0 stars.

Theme Star: 1 Point (Maximum Points: 3)
How well the game fits the theme of the competition.

Handicap Star: 1 Point (Maximum Points: 3)
How well the game fits the handicap of the competition.

You can get 0 stars in a category!

There is a total of 3 extra points you can get, too.

Startup Point: The game impresses me only moments after starting up the game.

Presentation Point: You get all stars in the Polish and Audio categories.

Jam Point: You get all stars in the Theme and Handicap categories.

Keep in mind that I have over 7 years of game design experience. Therefore, I have very high standards in regards to idea and execution of a game. Don't take my harsh criticism personally.

Well! It's voting season, and you all know what that means!

This jam was a great jam and I saw a lot of awesome games that I really hope will be further edited, developed and finished. I had a lot of fun reviewing this time around and this is the first time for two or three jams where I manage to get trough all the games. without further blabbering let's get to the voting system.

long version in spoiler

x<100 = below average.

x>100 = above average.
x=100 = average.

I tried to be fairly detailed in  my reviews but there is only so much I can write in a limited time frame, so some reviews are much shorter or unclearer than others. if you want a full length, detailed review on your game or think I've made a mistake please PM me before voting ends.

With that out of the way, Let's get on to the reviews. they are ordered alphabetically by the name of the author.  Thank you all for a wonderful jam and I look forward to seeing what you can come up with for the next one.

This has been Mr.Magnus, enjoy your day and happy jamming.

I played a total of 33 games, here are my final rankings:

1st: Booty Trap - Jack Oatly, Peps1992 and Jamie Gupta

This was a lot of fun! Very hectic resource-gathering-while-fending-off-enemies. I wish I could attack directly up or down, as I was pretty much defenseless against enemies coming from these directions unless I moved so that they had to approach me from the side. This is pretty much screaming for a multiplayer mode. Love it!
2nd: Must Go Up - 2Dcube
An excellent use of the theme, and I had a lot of fun playing this. Simple yet awesome.
3rd: Fort Bloks - Diptoman
Wonderful. Enjoyed the entire game. It was challenging, yet it didn't feel unfair. Soothing music and enjoyable gameplay. I had the most luck using only the rocket tower and wooden walls. Here's my setup on the last level: https://www.dropbox....07 20.03.04.png
4th: Frankenfirearm - NAL:
My immediate reaction was "...did NAL just make a tutorial edit?". But I kept on playing. After dying a few times because of the very low view angle and enemies that snuck up from behind, I realized the levels seemed to be randomly generated. Nifty. I played the game for a good while, and fully upgraded almost all the stats. It could definitely benefit from differently textured rooms and some more variation, but for a jam game it's fantastic. Fantastic job! So many enemy designs, and so much stuff to collect!
5th: Bridges the Game - Mercerenies
Really nice! I didn't have time to play it all the way through (it was very long), but for as long as I played, it kept pumping out new mechanics pretty much every second level. It didn't look nice, but it played really well.
6th: Tie - Snail_Man
Love it! Follows the theme well!
7th: Plodolps - TerraFriedSheep
Had a good time playing this, great puzzler! I really had to focus on some of the levels! I'd like a reset button that only stops the spawning and doesn't delete all my placed tiles o.o
8th: The Path - Mr. Magnus
A really nice tower defense. I got to round 58! I restarted my first try as I lost a bunch of health because of trying to figure out which towers to place. My second try went way better, and I had a good time playing this!
9th: Shattered Rocket - Yal
So much effort has been put into this game! Really, all those characters and all that customization. The game itself got pretty bland after a while, but I'm very very impressed by this!
10th: Disperspective - 11Clock
Now this was different! While I'm floating around I can't help but feel the levels were designed for somebody with a body! Great music and sound effects, and nice graphical style. The mouth thing was creepy
11th: Calgos' Battle - Jett87
I like it! All the different stats allow for lots of different strategies. I tried going all on defense and attack gain, but some of the enemies had pretty insane attack skills xD
12th: Simple Shapes RTS - Shadow Lancer
This is a pretty cool game! It took a while before I realized there was an enemy base, I initially thought it was some kind of tower defense. I built a few units, then I found out that the zap towers were sufficiently efficient in killing the enemies - so I destroyed their base with just zap towers! Here's a picture of my own base in the end: https://www.dropbox....07 19.27.54.png Pretty fun game!

I better get my votes in before the deadline.  and these ARE subject to change until final tally counted!
1: Bridges:  Merceneries
- The story was fun and entertaining. Plus the added ability to fast farward the text displaying via clicking is better then having a mute button with music. Had a very well designed intro of new mechanics and a nice learning curve to match.
2: BootyTrap: Jack and Co.
- The art style worked lovely here. Twas a nice use of theme. Had a good deal of difficulty to a nice action paced game.
3:  MustGoUp:  2Dcube
-Perfect use of the theme. Very nicely polished as well. Was challenging and somewhat addictive.
4:  Plodolps:  TerraFriedSheep
- had a nice presentation aside from the displaying of story/instructions. I found the text a bit hard to read at times.
5:  Poker Defense:    Lolligirl and Snider
-i wished it wasnt so easy, and wished the poker hand played a bigger part in what towers were givin.
Also wanted to mention the role reversal here... Good job!
Honourable mention-
Mr.Man: weckar.. I played your entry more then any other, by alot! Always hoping i might do one thing different and actually finnish a contract. Unfortunatly it never happened : (

ps, I apologize for not getting this done sooner!
