I originally had told myself I wouldn't jam again until summertime, but I need some redemption after last year's flop.

Well the part I don't understand is, how could you edit it at the same time?

Am I the only person who realizes the horror of what could happen if more than one person is working on the same piece of code at the same time?

After playing through many jam games for the past couple years, here's a list of some tips for keeping your game tolerable.

  • DON'T USE INSTALLERS!
  • Keep text to a minimum. I don't want to waste time reading long, dull dialog.
  • Keep it simple. Complex strategy games are cool, but take too long to figure out in the time-frame of the jam.
  • In general, one should be able to get the gist of a game within five to ten minutes.
  • Be cautious when using shaders or surfaces. They don't always work on all computers.
  • Get it at least semi-finished. Plain engines aren't very fun.
  • Make sure there are no major bugs. Many games have been ruined by error messages.

Those are just some of the things that bug me.

Sheesh, you're exaggerating! What's the worst that could happen? One edit overriding the other, code that isn't even remotely consistent, opening interdimensional rift allowing hordes of eldritch abominations to visit us, making the world implode due to versions conflict... really, maybe it's not the best idea, but not the most dangerous, either. >.<

On a side note, I recall that Lune planned to provide some nice riddles that might or might not contain red herrings; is it still valid? ^^"

Hi all. I'm feeling inspired and creative, so I came up with a game that not a lot would have been clever enough to come up with. Not a lot besides me have done this. Because I have the honor, privilege and duty of creating the handicap, and because I love sharing, I'll be revealing the handicap through puzzles one word at a time. The first puzzle is below:

Yeah, something about mobile Safari (at least on iOS) doesn't like the current Javascript. I actually made a small test page using HTML5 instead and that seemed to work. I'll try and see if I can revamp it.

It doesn't seem to be starting out pretty easy, as advertised.

Edit: Okay. X marks the spot. SPOT is spelled with s, p, o, and t. So X replaced the O, therefore O is the first letter of the handicap, since this is the first hint of the handicap. (And the X is in the first position of the clue.)

Well, its just a guess....

X position in time and space? Me like!

...though I guess it's something as dull as what Blake said. X and T are moving down in alphabet (one letter forward), resulting in Y and U, P and S are moving up in alphabet (one letter back), resulting in O and R.

UPDATES: Snail_Man has added a prize, Smack Games is looking for a team mate and Shadow Link has updated the clock for us!

  • DON'T USE INSTALLERS!

There is a valid excuse for using an installer... Single runtime executables created on a Windows 8 64 bit PC don't work on 32 bit machines. The installer does, regardless of where it was published from.

LOL - the main application uses a surface (see application_surface in the manual) ;)

It's at least error checked better than most people check their own surfaces. Shouldn't cause much of an issue.

So, I think the answer to this first clue is 'your' (letter after, letter before, alternating).

Very clever! Could have looked at that hint for 1000 years and not got it...

Wait, I wasn't aware of that... What about Windows 7? I have a Win7 64-bit laptop. The single runtime executables I make won't work on 32-bit machines, or is it Win8 only? Moreover, what about the .zip export?

It's only Windows 8/8.1, Windows 8's iexpress is different, and doesn't like 32 bit systems for some reason.

But if you're on 7 your fine.

This is why since windows 8 came out a lot more jam entries just seem to 'give up' on reviewer's computers. If you didn't already know about this you should be including a zip or installer with your game if you publish from windows 8 from now on, just to make sure everyone can play it.

Just my opinion, but I'd go with zip.

The zip is less of a hassle to remove/move after downloading, I like to know where everything is on my PC

Plus, installing a JAM game seems a bit silly as they are usually pretty small.

A devlog is optional, not a requirement (see first post- it says something along the lines of 'your game topic post may include a devlog'). Interpretive dancing is of course a valid form of devlog!

how in-depth does the dev blog need be be?

Two and a half years of game development taught me the joy of making something unique and unconventional. It is not good enough to make a game fun when there are way too many other freeware games that make fun their selling point.

As in depth as you want. You can literally use a single word as your devblog. You can make a drawing of the game, or make a full length stream. your call

Interpretive dancing is of course a valid form of devlog!

Anybody showing up here wearing a tutu gets my vote.

(... as soon as I get back from therapy.)

Oh yeah? How many votes would I get for simulating the adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?

As of now, I am entering the contest and I really hope I'll have the time to participate, either way I plan on review more games again so I can't wait to play what the community can make in three days once more!

how in-depth does the dev blog need be be?
