Here is a .gmd file for my RPG game, you can use it for an example of the following things:

Menus
Movement (Player & NPC)
Area Transitions
Combat System(still working on it)
Torch Effects
Character Generation

This example is really the game that I am currently working on, it will be updated as I complete more of it. I ask that you please only use this as an example of how to code RPGs, and please do not just modify it and call it your own.

I originally posted this back in 2003, well I still get lots and lots of requests to have it in zip format and have it work in GM6. I've updated and zipped it finally :)

Also, I've decided to start working on a new version that will have a completed combat system and pretty much as many new features as I can muster up... so stay tuned for that...

This is a great example with amazingly drawn sprites and a cool menu, but I almost cried (not really) when I realized that the sprites were non-animated and they moved on a grid system!!!!! Other than that huge glaring error, nice example! <_<
