"The graphics cannot consist of anything appealing to the eye."

I would ace that handicap!

I believe it's actually:

"The graphics cannot consist of anything but Shadowrend"

Looks like I'm late to the show, but I'm all caught up now.  There's no way my feeble brain can work these handicap puzzles, so I'll just sit back and enjoy.  You guys amaze me, sometimes.

I will definitely be entering.  I MUST finish a game with a bit of polish this time!  This is my goal.  Must dial back scope - must dial back scope - think small - think simple -- shouldn't be too hard, right?  Jam 13, ready or not, here I come.

This is going to be awesome. I love puzzles! although the only one I was able to decipher on my own was the 'OF' one ( V ). Maybe its something we won't be expecting, like ' the graphics must consist of only 3 colors ' or something like that. either way its going to be fun! I hope it is better than the last theme/handicap. I wasn't fond of those that much...:/

Are you expecting it to be something you won't expect?

but the mere fact that you're expecting it negates the ability to undo the expectation.

We've already had grayscale and one other color as a handicap, so the quite-similar three-color limit would be very unexpected to me.

Now, an interesting handicap would be disallowing sprites. How many people would get past boxes and circles for everything? Hmmm.

Now, an interesting handicap would be disallowing sprites. How many people would get past boxes and circles for everything? Hmmm.

If the handicap disallowed sprites specifically, I believe some people just would use backgrounds. Not the most efficient, but probably works well enough in most cases. ;)
Also, I wonder if particles would count as sprites; since technically they kinda sorta are (you can grab a particle pictures from somewhere to add to your game, even). ^^"

"the graphics _ _ of"

I suppose the highest probability is in the "the graphics must/cannot consist of ..." type, but what about this alternative :

"the graphics and _ of"

For instance : "the graphics and sounds of the game must ..."

I tried picking the letter L of the winner of jam J, but it doesn't seem to work right : with games names, "redhsreiig" doesn't seem to mean much and an anagram solver didn't find anything with it, and it's even worse with authors names

I had a good feeling about this one :/

This change does make sense with what I wrote and choosing games names instead of authors as it changes the end's result from iig to ING. The problem is there are still strange results for the rest of the word : redhereing is my current result >_<

@Nal's puzzle:

L
L or O
S
Y
D
O
L
Z
L or O
T

...

Makes sense.
The premise seems pretty simple though. Jam # winner, letter # in their name
J10 l1: L (Lune)
J9 l11: L or O (Lolligirl & TheSnidr or TheSnidr & Lolligirl)
J3 l4: S (TheSnidr)
J2 l9: Y (This is a tricky one, since Spydog has only 6 letters. I would just begin again when counting, which would put us at D)
J7 l15: D Same as above, GameDevDan, going around the corner puts us at D
J6 l3:  O (Jools64)
J8 l3: L (Holgersson1988)
J12 l10: Z (Greenblizzard);
J11 l9: L or O again (Lolligirl & TheSnidr or TheSnidr & Lolligirl)
J4 l6: T (Robert3dG+)

However, this interpretation might not make much sense, so I'll look into other options.

Perhaps the L(Number) it is the rank, that people were placed? So the first one would be Lune because he placed first in jam 10.

Not sure if I'm late to the party, But the first two puzzles we're "The" and "Graphics" I believe.
When I read the Third puzzle (apologies if someone saw this), but the word that instantly jumped to mind was "have" as I'm not sure but "His father couldn't of been more proud" sounds wrong to me. I know Lune said something about of appearing everywhere, not really sure if that was completely cracked or not.

The next clue, hmm:

R  |  L
E  |  O
D  |  S
     |  Y  (if looped)
O  |  E (if looped)
R  |  O
R  |  L
E  |  Z
E  |  L
G  |  T

Using the names of the games(left) or Username (right) which won, may have made a mistake though, hmm.

Red Or Green pops to mind :S!

Snail_Man, try with your specifications but use the name of the game, not the winner who made the game.

EDIT: I'll do it.

#12: Fox Of The Night
#11: Race Friends
#10: Rainbow Below
#09: THAT DOGGONE CAT
#08: Turtle Termination
#07: Chickens & Moles
#06: Isra's Wing
#05: Disillusion (also) Breaking The Facade (this one is confusing)
#04: Carmageddon
#03: DOODLEDOO
#02: BOOM CHK CHK BANG
#01: Moose's Pancake Adventure

The key is
J10 L1
J9 L11
J3 L4
J2 L9
J7 L15
J6 L3
J8 L3
J12 L10
J11 L9
J4 L6

I notice how it doesn't use Jam 5. Anyway, with that in mind, the answer is still gibberish.

An earlier of NAL's posts said we'd hate him when he stopped letting on which word the clue was referring too. It's true, a red herring is a literary term that refers to something used to throw people off the scent of a trail, but it could also be one of the words in the handicap: "The graphics must consist of at least one red herring." It doesn't really make sense, though. You usually aren't trying to decipher graphics, and it wouldn't be a very exciting handicap if all it meant was a little red fish sits in each person's game.

What could make sense is to have a red herring in the context of the game play; however, outside of detective and hunting games, this would probably materialize in the form of trick doors or false prizes. Furthermore, it's already fairly established that "graphics" play a role in the handicap.

All told, the most likely candidate is that this puzzle itself is the red herring. There are ten days yet before the dawn of the Jam and revealing the handicap too soon would spoil part of the fun.

The number after J is the jam #, and the number after l is the letter in the winning game's name, ignoring spaces.

By the way, the e in "herring" works if you turn the "&" in "Chickens & Moles" into an "and".

I mean the part of "Must Consist of Sprite Rips", that will not allow you to add your own, I was actually thinking about including a few EE of previous winner games this time, of course, this is going to depend on the theme and handicap

Alright, the previous NAL's riddles were clever. But this one was just downright hilarious! I have a feeling what NAL meant was that this riddle is not part of handicap at all (because it's red herring), though that red herring could be red herring itself! Or something. (yay, meta!)

Quick question about rules: this will be my first jam, so I need to ask, when the rules say that scripts can be used as a resource, does that mean that we can copy old scripts/engines into our jam games? I just wanted to make sure so I didn't break any rules.

Thanks. I have a bunch of old engines lying around, and I thought I may be able to make use of them.

Yes, this is your 'toolset'. So, bring it :)

Red herring probably just means this hint is meaningless.

Red herring probably just means this hint is meaningless.

It might be cleverly designed to make you think that it's meaningless though...  :whistling:

Given the fact that the clue was way easier than any of the others to understand, but waaaaay harder than any of the others to actually look up and find, I think it was just meaningless. I mean, it's the first clue I've understood, but it took FOREVER to look up and figure out. I think NAL is sitting behind his computer right now (right now is a relative term, it's probably about 3am for him) and laughing at us trying to find meaning from it........................... or there is a meaning and he's laughing at me trying to prove there is no meaning.
