HayManMarc's Really Real Reviews -- Jam 11 edition!!
( ^^ reviews are hosted on my webpage at this link ^^ )

My votes go to:

1. Super Drunken Dinosaur Simulator 2013 – Detective Pixel

SDDS2013Logo.png

2. Rollolol – Venomous

3. Trials of Hell – tehpilot

4. Sticky Zombies – chance

5. Pixhroom - Hiznopellagio

Best Use Of Theme -------- Grumpy Growlies – TeamSteeve

Best Use Of Handicap ----  I’m Not Scared – bksonic

Best Presentation ----------  Prisnhax – NAL

--------------------------------------

Here's the rest of the vote rankings.  These are different than the ratings.  I liked some games better than others and ranked them a little differently than the ratings.

Spoiler

Jam 11 is a success!

I am somewhat happy with my accomplishment.  I set out to create a simple and cute-ish game, and I believe I have done so, at least, so far.  I'm working on finishing the game and hope to have a WIP up soon.

As for all of your games and my reviews for them?  Some games (so far that I have played) weren't very player-friendly, but they've all been great concepts!  72 hours is very little time to get something working the way you want.
I applaud everyone for their playable entries!!

--------------------------------------

Here's how the ratings stacked up:

Best Devblog - Detective Pixel

The ranks of the other games I've played:

Spoiler

Please do not take these rankings too seriously. Please also note that these are just based on my preferences and not the objectively better games (for instance, you can see that I don't particularly enjoy horror games so they are ranked quite low, even though they are objectively great games).

If you feel I've missed anything in your game, I've made a mistake or I've offended you in some way, please PM me and I will make the appropriate changes. Thanks for reading!

Spoiler

Note: From this point onwards, I am unable to upload any images. Instead, I will just link to them. Apologies if your game falls below this sentence.

Spoiler

Note: Since, there's not enough time to write in-depth reviews for all of the games, I'm just going to say "the good" and "the bad" as well as give a summary for the rest of the games. This is due to my own laziness and incompetence so I sincerely apologise (please don't flame me).

Spoiler

I will add more reviews in the future (hopefully).

I will only write some little things, as I don't have much time (I still have to try some games. I left the ones that appear to be the worst games at the end, so I already have my favourites"

My votes go to (the games that I think are the better based on the theme, the time the author spent on work, etc.):
1- Dewey feed Grogg - GameDevDan
2- Pixhroom - Hixnopellagio
3- Grow a Monster - xavery

Here are the "best of":
Best use of Theme: Almost everyone, the best is BOO (by SecondReality), just because the monsters "scare people", and in this game you do that.
Best use of Handicup: Dewey feed Grogg (by GameDevDan) || Abby and Elliot (by thegame)
Best Presentation: ???
Best Devlog: ???

My prize goes to (the games that I prefer - note that this is not my voting, those are just the games that won my prize):
1- Idle Hands - Darzoz
2- Fighting fire with Foxfire - Darkwalker247
3- Pixhroom - Hiznopellagio

My prize is:

I wanna put my two/three favourite games as Easter egg in my next Jam game, and I will write about them in my blog: gvsgmstuff.WordPress.com

EDIT: check the post on my blog for the prize, that is a little review :P The rest of the prize (the easter egg) will appear in the next Jam, so you'll have to wait xD

Update: I'm dropping out of voting so that I can have more time to prepare my team's commercial project for alpha release! I'm also preparing to go to college!

I'm going to try to keep this simple.

Note: While the theme and handicap are encouraged, I'm NOT going to vote games on the theme and handicap.

-Up Next-

Spoiler

-Disqualified-
Key
Horror: The game is designed around fear. I do not enjoy the feeling of fear at all, so I simply avoid this genre all together.
Failed: The game failed to run on my computer.
Broken: The game is broken beyond playable.
Unwelcoming: The game is too complex to get into easily. I have many games to play, so if your game requires a lot of time to be sunk into in order to enjoy it, I will skip it. This includes games that introduce me with an instructions manual.
Installer: The game has to be installed.

Controls: The game suffers from bad controls.

I really liked all the games to some degree but had to rank  them in order  for me to pick my tops.

EDIT: After playing my higher ranked games again some ranking changed.

My votes go to
  • TerraFriedSheep – Letterboxes
  • N-cubo – My little monster adventure
  • SecondReality – Boo!
  • Chance – Sticky Zombies
  • MishMash – And then came the monsters..
  • Lune – Department
  • Lolligirl & TheSnidr – Race Friends
  • Venomous – Rollolol
  • Osiris – Exploit a monster
  • TehPilot – Trials of hell

My Voting process of all games
+'s (0-5)     -'s couldnt play/download       :yucky: hated(reserved for one game)     :( Got error/crash
The +'s are for games that kept my interest.
Of the games that have more +'s I'll then play again to decide my final rank.

My votes go to:

1: Race Friends - Lolligirl & theSnidr

2: Fighting Fire with Foxfire - darkwalker247

3: I'm Not Scared - bksonic

Best use of theme: SecondReality

Best use of handicap: Detective Pixel

Best presentation: Lune

Just a little disclaimer before I start the reviews.  I am generally not a fan of horror games.  I do not find the idea of being scared very appealing, and if that's all there is, I will probably not find your game very interesting.  Nothing personal, they're just not my cup of tea.  With that said, I will try to be fair.  If a game has a good, creepy atmosphere, I'll acknowledge it.

Ok.  I'm gonna try to review all the games.  Here we go:

My Reviews
I am very critical with my reviews and will examine the games with ruthless scrutiny. I do not intend to offend, and hope my reviews are useful. I am going to attempt a complete playthrough of each game, and determine whether the game fit the theme and handicap, tell aspects of the game I found positive, tell aspects of the game I found negative, and write a short summary of my experience with the game.
I will be using the randomizer and updating this post as I review games.

Games worth noticing:

I've played or attempted to play every single game entered! My computer is bad, so several games (in particular 3D ones) will not run, or will be too slow for me to play. Also, I've experienced several graphics errors, not because of your games but because my computer sucks. So if I say graphics errors with your game, assume its not your fault.

Theme, gameplay, and difficulty were the three biggest factors in how I voted.

Reviews each have two sentences. And you may think its unfair that your game didn't get a review because my computer sucks, but hey you have to optimize your game for those of us without fancy computers. ;)

The way I judge Jam games is based mostly on “HOW AWESOME WAS THE CONCEPT?” followed closely by “How well was it done/how fun is it?” cause as we all know, everyone’s totally rushed when they’re doing one of these 72-hour things and the execution sometimes doesn’t quite match what you envisioned. (so in other words, don’t mind too much if I complain about the controls lol.) I believe that creating something different and taking risks is more important than sticking to the same tried-and-true formula with a few changes. There's a trade-off between polish/completeness and innovation, and I don't think that doing something outside your norms should count against you.

I will play, rate, and vote on all the games as usual, but the reviews themselves are by PM request. There are two reasons: 1) I'll run out of time if I review every game, and 2) I'd rather write a few detailed reviews that will be meaningful to the the reviewee, rather than 70 short reviews that might not get read. And if I review your game, all I ask of you is to reply and let me know your thoughts on it. The reviews will be edited into this post.

Firstly, well done to all of those who entered! No matter how people react to your games, you got the job done. Which is alot more than most people who a reviewing your games did (including myself)  :)

So, whether your reviews are good or bad, hat's off to you for getting something submitted (and within 72hrs, which is an awesome feat!) .

1.Monsters Are Not Real - Hellfish

  • Superbly presented. Only drawback was the awkward combination of mouse and keyboard.

2.And then Came the Monsters - MishMash

  • Also well presented. Great music and sound choice. A shame the was no full screen option. Not a fan of having to use mouse and keyboard on a platformer, though.

3.Afraid Of The Light - chaz_13

  • Nice game that uses phyisics well. Cool graphics and moody lighting. Very challenging (in a good way). Only thing I could pick on was the mouse control to get into the menus it would drift out of screen bounds. Also I think keyboard driven menus would have been a better choice as the gameplay is keyboard only. (Alot of games tested made the same mistake here). Overall - very cool.

 4.Abbey and Elliot - thegame

  • Stunning graphics. Could have done with better alpha around the lead characters though (possibly a time constraint - otherwise perfect). Control system was a little basic but did the job. Could easily see this as a releasable game with a little more content. Great job! :)

5.Monster Defense - Fireball16

  • A cool take on the tower defence genre. I like that the bullets can miss the monsters due to movement. Maybe misses a few points on the 'non-violence' handicap. Like most tower defence games, got a little repetitive quickly. Great graphics.

6.The Monster Within - SpeedChuck

  • Cool start on a retro platformer (corrected by SpeedChuck that this isn't a platformer because it contains no jumping . Didn't realise jumping was a pre-requisite on the definition of a platformer - learn something new every day). Seemed to bug out after talking to the Doctor after seeing the monsters (possibly unfinished at this point?). Funny humour in the dialogue as well. A good start on what could easily become a fun full game.

7.Grow a Monster - xaveri

  • Great graphics and laboratory feel. With more options and variety of monsters, could be a cool game!

8.The Bounds Of Endersome - lukeyrulz

  • Refreshing to see that the programmer has though about a couple of options for control (WSAD and arrows) giving the player a choice. A keyboard game that requires a mouse click to start it, though? Menus should have been arrow driven in my opinion. Graphics basic and gameplay not bad.

9.Toyz - The Black Dragon

  • Graphics a bit bright (epileptics be warned). No explanation of control system (had to figure out what keys to use by pressing keys randomly). Not a bad start to a platformer, but didn't give me much incentive to play on.

10.Cookie House11 - kearel

  • Hand drawn graphics, not too bad due to time constraints. Couldn't do anything though once the game started (not sure if it was incomplete or bugged).

11.Nut A Joke Gaem 3 - Lukasmah

  • This one... I didn't have any idea what was going on. Graphics were not the best (or even near the best). Honestly not sure if English was the programmers native language, as every single word was badly mispelt (was this meant to be the style?) and the grammer would have made Yoda proud. Still, well done for entering something, it is alot more than I did. So, no matter how people react to your game, well done for getting it finished. That is the hardest part of all :)

Best Use Of Theme - Hellfish (Monsters Are Not Real)

Best Use Of Handicap - thegame (Abbey and Elliot)

1. Boo! (by SecondReality)
2. Destitute (by 11clock)
3. Egg (by Coolbot4K)
4. Race friends (by Lolligirl & theSnidr)

10. Pixhroom (by Hiznopellagio)
11. Monster Dodgeball (by Joh)

Best use of theme : Monster Mania (by Sirham)
Best use of handicap : Dewey Feed Grogg (by GameDevDan)

Now for the reviews.
How I did : I tried to test all 79 games in their alphabetic order. I avoided the few ones that required an installation, sorry about those. One other game disappeared on launch and I didn't feel like trying to find it back in the games thread. I didn't use any numbered notation system. I tried to be honest with what I thought about the general idea of the game, the way it's implemented, and if I felt the game was eligible for theme and handicap. I marked those with a star, and so did I with the games that I liked enough to vote to.
When I was done, I reopened each game to remember them and evaluate which one I would choose for theme, handicap, and then sort the ones I liked by preference.

So, here are the reviews :

***************

This Jam, I've decided to award my votes based on innovation. That might include, for example, imaginative gameplay, original puzzle idea, innovative movement, or even unusual graphical design. And fortunately in this particular Jam, we have plenty of really innovative games to choose from.

The reviews are still being added (and existing reviews modified as I play the games more). My reviews so far:
