Ok, I saw that if I join the next JAM (and I'm planning to join) I'll have to keep a dev log. That's not a real problem, but I have a question:

Can we use some different type of "log"? I mean: normally I saw text logs, with date, time etc. What about a video log, or a "audio log"?

I'm not planning to use it, but I'm curious if I can do it :)

Also: I don't have to keep a devlog, it's optional, right?

Yes, you can. Last jam, if i remember correctly, there's a member that uses videos as his/her devlog.

Thank you Hiznopeewlaygio!

But the second question: is it optional?

Of course it does. There's no rules that forbid any kind of devlog.

You're free to do anything else, as long as it doesn't break the rule

??? we're talking about gmc jam here. and if you want to make a devlog, maybe you can start by writing your game progress, with a small description and maybe a screenshot.

It's a requirement now? I've never been a fan of them. Taking time to document what I'm doing takes time away from making my game, let alone reading others'.

Keeping a devlog isn't a requirement, but is a part of the Jam which keeps people updated on your progress and may help people see the effort you are/have put into your game.

If you are wondering what makes a good dev-blog, I guess a good place to look is at the dev-logs that won the best dev-log award in past Jams!

(10 minutes later...)

While looking them up, I've only found 3 4 results, one of which I can't see as the image is broken (?), so maybe it's best to just look through the game topics and check some out yourself and see what sort of style you like and get some ideas how you can make your own dev-log :)

Here are the three results I found (+ updated with Jam 10):

Jam 6 - TerraFriedSheep

Jam 7 - Team Ultimollusk

Jam 8 - Unsure, images appear broken

Jam 9 appears to not have a best dev-log?

Jam 10 - Coolbot4k

Edit: and I don't think the results are posted for Jam 10? Thanks Snail_Man for finding the post :)

While I plan to enter the next jam, my devlog probably won't be the most detailed, I haven't ever made one before. We'll see :)

You don't have to keep a devlog, but it's certainly a part of the fun of the Jam. A great way to take short breaks and be inspired is by looking at what others are doing, and sharing what you've come up with so far.

Sorry to bring this topic back to life, but are game snapshots/beta's allowed as the devlogs?

yes. There aren't any rules on how to make a devlog, just make it interesting
