See my latest post in this thread for some teasers on the upcoming demo!

Category: 360 Degree Movement Topdown Shooter

File Size: 15.4 MB

GM Version: GM8

Vista Compatible: Unsure

Changes Screen Resolution: No

Download Link: http://sandbox.yoyog...660-starfoxdemo

More screenshots located in the Yoyogames sandbox link!

Features:

  • Smooth 360 movement in All Range Mode, and a standard RAIL mode, in which the arwing is locked in place
  • Shooting lasers, along with a charge shot by holding and releasing the button
  • Boosting and braking in All Range Mode
  • Sturdy dialogue system, with actual voice clips from the original 64 game!
  • Enemy formation system, with plenty of room for variation! I can create lines of enemies, horizontal or vertical. I can create delta formations, box formations, and soon much more. Each formation can be given a specific direction and speed, or some formations can even follow a path. I'm quite proud of what I have so far, and I know I can make it even better.

Currently has two levels. The training level, and the first actual mission. Please take the time to play the ENTIRE demo. The first mission is much better than the tutorial, and I've spent A LOT of time working on all of the timings of everything. Making actual game play mesh with dialogue AND MUSIC is not easy. Every voice and timing was well thought out. It won't take longer than 10 minutes to play this demo.

Thanks in advance for any replies! I appreciate them VERY much.

There's not much to say since this is such an early demo.  Aside from the obvious barrel rolls...other than that, ARM definitely needs a tutorial or a place for the player to fly around a bit to get the hang of it.

Thanks. Yeah, it's a bit lacking at the moment. The dialogue and movement system were mostly what I was wanting feedback for. Is the movement satisfactory? Should I reduce the speed / turning speed? Stuff like that. One thing I'm struggling to deal with is in ARM, you can complete a full turn while still moving in one direction, and you don't do that in the actual game. I'm not sure how to go about dealing with that.

It is a very earlyt demo so I can't say much.

The tutorial was nice.

The movement does feel pretty good to control for both the different modes. But will have to see more about it once we see more gameplay it's hard to tell.

The dialog system was cool but when I didn't hear them talk I sometimes didn't read it fast enough and missed some message. Not sure if there could maybe be a blabber noise when you have no voices. And a dialog message speed option might be good to.

Sound was also amazing, cool that you used the N64 Sound (it is also possible to rip models and such too form a rom too). A small note I notice the bullets don't come out of the same spots when shooting up as if your were shooting left. Very nice fangame too can't wait to see how the actual game will turn out to be like. You could Compare it to the original star fox game, and maybe any 2d portables if they ever made any too might give you ideas.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

  • For the lasers not going in the right spot, I've (mostly) fixed that already.
  • The dialogue system is basically a big timeline. I can easily adjust when the transmissions start, and how long they last. And when I say easily, I mean it gets really tiring seeing a thousand different events in the timeline, but it's not that bad if I keep things organized.

  • As for not being able to read the message, the training level is going to be the only one without real voices. I've already created a bit of a script (like a movie script) for the first level I have planned, all with using existing sound clips from the game. The only thing really holding me back from creating the level is the graphics. I need graphics!  :yucky: (shameless plug for my topic in the graphics forum *cough*)

Anyways, thanks.

Updated again, this time with the first mission mostly completed! It's quite a bit more than what the previous demo had, and I'd greatly appreciate it if you tried it out.

I love the first level so far! The way you put in the voices in responses to the level was funny. Awesome controls; level 1 so far verified that. Can't wait for level one to be completed.

I tried pausing on level one and got a error too , something about not beeing another level so I think u could try fixing that by making another one when level one is done and keep doing that to avoid that error message please :)

Can't fight Starwolf yet, but I think you'll enjoy the first mission. I haven't worked on this recently -- I should probably at least get the voice script for another mission done. Then maybe I can make the first mission better, as you may notice that there are some brief periods of time with a lack of things to shoot / look at. Also have to work on balancing issues.

Also, gotta make barrel rolls.

Here's a little teaser of the second level. I've got the script mostly figured out, and all the sound files have been gathered / converted into .wav format. I'd use mp3 but it makes the game lag unfortunately. What's left to do is create the dialogue timeline and events timeline, as well as some graphics. Sadly, the level one boss is still in a state of incompletion. It's hard to make bosses! I've made some progress on it -- it shoots stuff at you from the two arms on the side, but that's it. I plan on having it so you have to use a charge shot on the yellow spots, and then shoot the red part to beat it. Pretty Starfox-esque, I'd say.

Anyways, here's the "script" :) for level two.

All of the stuff they say will be actual audio.

Pepper: "Recover our base from the enemy army!"
Fox:	"I'm on my way"

*** - some shooting, easy but entertaining

Peppy: "Enemy tanker!

*** - shooting the tanker, in the middle of the screen. Takes a bit to take down

Peppy: "Destroy the two exhaust pipes"

*** - tanker gets destroyed

Falco: "I think you look better in a tank!"
Fox: "Why don't you come down here Falco?"
Falco: "I'm fine" - cutoff from 'Falco here, I'm fine'

***

Rob64: "Enemy approaching from the left"
Wolf: "Playtime is over, Starfox!"
Pigma: "Peppy, long time no see!"
Peppy: "You're mine!"

***

Wolf: "You're good, but I'm better!"
Fox: "We'll just see about that, Starwolf!"

*** Pigma gets shot down by Peppy

Pigma: "This cant be happening!"
Peppy: "I'm sure he learned his lesson"

//When wolf gets to a certain health value (PAUSE TIMELINE HERE)

Wolf: "I cant lose!"
Peppy: "Good goin' Fox!"
Rob64: "A bomb has been planted at the base"
Falco: "He can sure be a pain in the neck"
Slippy: "Let me handle this!"
Fox: "Split up, and take it to 'em!"

*** Slippy goes off screen, and now the gameplay steps up.

Rob64: "Thirty seconds to explosion"
Rob64: "Fifteen seconds to explosion"
Fox: "Slippy, is everything okay?"
Rob64: "Bomb exploding, keep clear"
Fox: "Slippy!"

***Explosion sound, fade out, end of mission

More teasers! Making progress, ever so slowly! Most of the graphics are placeholders of course, until I have a good enough game that somebody would be willing to make decent ones for me.

LwnRKK1.png

The main menu! It looks snazzy, doesn't it? The Arwings on the sides sweep inwards when you make a selection :)

99jo3cC.png

From the second mission I'm working on. I've managed to make a pretty decent Landmaster sprite, but I can't say so much for the rest of this level so far. Starting to make a dent in the first 30 seconds or so of gameplay for this level, but that's it right now.

If anybody wants a download with these small additions, let me know. It's not that much, so that's why I haven't included a download.

Another download is coming pretty soon, I'd say! I finished up the first level and its boss. Things are a bit rough around the edges, but it's playable! Once I get a little further on the landmaster level I'll release another download. Sadly, the filesize is only getting bigger...but the music and sound effects are so important to me. I really dont want to use MIDI for the music :(

EDIT: I installed an extension that allows me to load and unload sound files when I need to. So, I think if I include a .zip file of all the music used in the game, that should reduce the download size a bit. I took out the music I'd been using and got rid of 10 MB! But I'm not sure how much smaller the .zip file will make them.
