Can your kid help with the game dev? Scribble art or sound effects?

I don't think she understands the concept of drawing - but smearing things on other things comes naturally.

Jackson Pollock became a legend doing that. So you never know.

My aim for this Jam is to come up with something completely unexpected.

Me too. I plan to make a decent game. Nobody will expect that. :P

I'll be offering a few promo codes for Kings. One for each of the top 3 , 1 for the best use of theme and 1 for the best reviewer. Undecided if I'll be participating or not but hopefully I'll have more than 3.5 hours to make something.

Guys why are you trying to guess the theme already? It takes a lot of time to find things and it takes off the fun of the jam. Nocturne I think you shouldn't give letters so fast, maybe one or two in the last three days or something. It is really annoying that 90% of the posts in jam topics are always theme guesses.

Nocturne is good at keeping it very ambiguous until near the end. How else are we supposed to entertain ourselves? Making ridiculous guesses at the theme is all I have and all I know. O_O

Other than "I'm in" there's not much else to say

Also, let's do some detective work: last person to win made games involving turtles, apocalypses, and time machines. Perhaps the second word is time? Dualist time story? I'd totally love a time machine theme for an entire jam :o

</sarcasm> right...... because no one ever guesses the theme beforehand, especially ever since gmc jam 5 <sarcasm>

I'm in on this contest!

From what I remember, the thing I spent the most time on is getting all the resources worked/found. Soooo, this time I'm going to prepare ahead of time! I'm going to get my brothers and myself to generate a crap load of graphics/music while I create and find some killer sound effects and what have you.

Does it matter? There are so many guesses that, if we do manage to guess the correct theme, it'll be meaningless by the point we do find out about it. No one will cheat and create an engine before the starting time based on a random guess that might be or not correct. In a mechanical point of view, it's ridiculous.

About the Jam, never participated in one. I wanted to, but it's bad timing for me as I will have an exam on the 28th. Really wish to know what it feels to be in one of these things.

Agreed! Half the enjoyment of the topic is guessing the theme... And people HAVE guessed the last 3 Jam themes before the start and although I'm sure they didn't start before the time, they had a head-start in the planning, which is often more important than the coding.

Haha, nice effort in that post! Though, I think to spare a few headaches, it might've been better to just link to a GMT Clock. No fussing around with calculations or time zones, and you just have to know the begin/end times. But hey, education is awesome too!

Sheesh, 1 day and already 4 pages in this topic! I've updated my clock, as I was sleeping earlier. I also encourage peeps to drop by the #gmc IRC channel if you haven't already. ^_^

Do you guys realize that this game jam overlaps the Global Games Jam, which is happening the same weekend? I'm already committed to the Global Games Jam, but I was planning on using GameMaker. Is participation in both jams permissible if the game can fit the themes of both jams (that's the tricky part)?

I don't personally see any issue with it. It's not like you're at an advantage, and it means more entries for more contests  It should also be noted that you're not totally required to follow the GMC Jam's theme/handicap, you may just not rank as highly in people's eyes if you don't.

Last jam I had to convert my game from Studio back to 8.1 in the last few minutes because it wouldn't work on XP due to a problem with Studio games where it crashed if you tried to change the window size on XP. :(
It was a real bummer as it made some of the stuff I programmed not work very well, but I only noticed the XP problem just before the jam finished.

That's since been fixed so hopefully this jam I will only be using Studio.

I'm switching to Studio for this Jam too. Last Jam, I hadn't completely made the switch from my physics DLL to Box2D. But now I'm pretty comfortable with Studio's Box2D.

So I won't be going back to 8.1 again.

We're still guessing! heh.

But seriously, a handicap is basically something that hampers your performance. For the gmc jam, it might be something like "you may only use three sprites" or something

Yeah, but generally the handicap forces you to think outside the box, but wont actually decrease the quality of the game (or troll participants)

Think along the lines of "you may not use text" or "the game must use NES color palete" and not along the lines of "only 3 sprites" or "the game must not have music" etc.

EDIT: also, the handicap wont relate to code (because that isnt enforceable). So no "you may only use 1 object" or "you must have under X lines of code"

Not really... Put it like this, the GMCJam is supposed to be about spontaneity and experimentation. So, the idea is that you get the theme and the handicap and you go and do something that you would never have done normally... you think "outside the box" and do something that is outwith your comfort zone. So, by preparing things beforehand, you are NOT being true to the spirit of the competition and are also not respecting the other participants who DO keep the GMCJam spirit in their games. You are also more likely to go with something that you know, and in which you trust your programming skills and knowledge will be able to create, which is just not what this is all about!!!

tl;dr - You can, but it's cheating. Basically. Posted Image
