Restarting this topic because the forum killed the old one because it got well, old.

This is a Bullet Hell (Danmaku) crossover game that I started a few months ago and have decided to resume work on.

Crossover Shooter (actual name pending, open to suggestions)

This is ONLY the first three levels! There are also infinite lives at the current moment.
The game is primarily a crossover between Raiden, Touhou, Gradius, Ketsui, and DoDonPachi. Mostly the game only contains elements of the former three at the moment...
There are 3 playable characters:
Raiden Mk II (origin: Raiden)
Reimu Hakurei (origin: Touhou)
Vic Viper (origin: Gradius)

Each has their own unique hitbox, bomb, and weapon system. The weapons systems are power-based and level up when you grab powerups from fallen enemies.
Bombs are replenished by a unique powerup.

Here's what I liked:
-Your ship's speed is almost perfect. Not too fast, not too slow
-I like being able to just hold the fire button, instead of smashing it over and over again
-The ships themselves look great
-Your ship can move anywhere on the screen
-Some neat effects already for such an early WIP
-Cool enemy shot spreads
-How the power ups get sucked into your ship
-Weird bosses (very Japanese)
-The front end interface when you are starting a new game. Very nice.
-From what I can tell, there does seem to be a way out of getting shot during every wave.

Here's what I didn't like:
-The repetition: Enemy appears, fires, goes away. Enemy appears, fires, goes away.
-Nothing else really going on in the game. You move, you fire, you throw bombs. You die a lot.
-No weapon changes during game play (that I know of)

I'm probably biased because I rarely play vertical shooters anymore. They really have to stand out in order to be enjoyable. I think you have a nice idea, to combine several types of games into one. I also think it can work if perhaps there was a tad more variety. Like, maybe some enemies just try to smash into you instead of shoot at you. Or, maybe there are chunks of asteroids that come out of nowhere that you have to destroy.

Unfortunately, I played this without sound, so I cannot comment on that. Otherwise, keep us posted if you add any updates. There is potential here.

I didn't think anyone was going to respond to this...
But thank you for your response and maybe I can explain some things better:

-No weapon changes during game play (that I know of)


The ships' weapons level up as you increase in power. A level up occurs every 25 power. At 100 power the ship gains it's strongest non-bomb weapon and power is said to be MAX. Also if your power is between 25 and MAX, if you enter focus mode (hold down shift) your weapon's range will narrow as long as your in focus mode. Be careful though, if you die your power resets to zero!

Here's what I didn't like:

I also think it can work if perhaps there was a tad more variety. Like, maybe some enemies just try to smash into you instead of shoot at you. Or, maybe there are chunks of asteroids that come out of nowhere that you have to destroy.


Actually that's planned for later stages. Essentially, as you progress, the enemy/obstacle variety goes up, making a difficulty curve.

Unfortunately, I played this without sound, so I cannot comment on that.


Bummer... if you did, you would of noticed that the level is synced with the background music (which is the only reason the stages are governed by timelines and not scrolling views)

Ha ha! I know the feeling : )

I gave it another go today with the music. Here's some more feedback:

What I liked:
-The music is perfect. It is an 80s shooter with that old 80s shooter music
-Sound effects fit very nicely
-Gameplay does improve as the weapons power up more and more
-Focus is an interesting component of the game play. I can imagine it might be useful during particular segments

What I think would be nice:
-Parallax scrolling background
-After death, just a tad more invincibility time before full mortality
-On the start screen, I couldn't figure out what that middle ship was... until I realized it wasn't a ship at all. I assume this sprite will be less blurry in the future versions?

Any plans to add auxiliary weapons, similar to R-Type? How about guided missiles? Oh the possibilities!

Yeah, Touhou sprites have this weird transparency fringe around them that makes them look somewhat blurry... I found better ones but it doesn't make much of a difference blur wise and I don't feel like changing the sprite either because I would have to redo the select screen because it's a separate sprite from the characters.

In other words: I'm making progress on stage two and hopefully it will be done tomorrow. When it is, I'll post a new version (version 0.01) that features both the level from version 0.0001 and the new stage 2

The menu music I do believe it is from the 80s (Select weapon array theme from Gradius III)
The stage music is actually from the and the 2000's the (Stage 1 music is Universe from Gradius V and the boss music is Metal Storm from Raiden IV)

Any plans to add auxiliary weapons, similar to R-Type? How about guided missiles? Oh the possibilities!


I thought about adding the Options from Gradius and equivalents for the other fighters as a unique powerup, but not right now. I'll probably add them in a later update perhaps? :wink:

Guided missiles? Probably not, but I'll consider it...

I have played the first version and really enjoyed it. Smooth movement, generously small hit boxes on your craft, the right number of bullets for a first level, really good start.

I had a few issues, just minor things:
- the first wave of enemies don't contrast well with the first background: blue grey combo is a bit hard, especially for the very first enemies.
- the sound files must be very high quality. That would explain the large filesize. You could probably afford to downsample them a bit, to make more people want to download the game.
- The purple scrolling background scrolls horizontally as well as vertically, but it does not tile well horizontally
- the same problem as the original shooters had re: difficulty: if you were a bad player and died, you were doubly punished in that the rest of the level would be even harder for you, because your weapon power would be down. I've never been sure of how to fix this, but I did like several games' approaches to this, where you would go invulnerable for 2-3 secs when respawning, and all your powerups would still be onscreen for you to try and collect.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, made be very nostalgic.

Keep up the work on it and I'll check it out again next update,

I had a few issues, just minor things:

I might replace that first background with a different space background, perhaps closer to gradius style.

by the purple background did you mean this?

I actually tried to mask the horizontal tiling as best as I could by making it translucent and adding another one scrolling in the opposite direction. I was trying to get the background looking as close to the source background (minus the 3d effect in the link below) as possible.
The source background can be viewed in this playthrough here. (It's the level background, and even here you can still notice the horizontal tiling slightly)

All my sound file are .mp3s, and I don't plan on editing them (unless I want them to loop)

The next update is just about ready, but can someone play stage 2 and tell me if there are any bugs that I may have missed when I tested it?

Known Bugs:
-Utsuho (Stage 2 boss) stops in a non-centered location (fixed this one already, the boss will move where it's supposed to in the next version)
-Large enemy won't drop powerups if it's killed too fast (also fixed)

This is good for a very early WIP - you get some things very right with this, yet, other things not so right.
* The ship's weapons feel underwhelming. All you get is this tiny pea-shooter and you power it up veeeery slooowly to be of any use. And even then it feels week. Look at shooters like Soukyugurentai or Gigawing - you START with this star-killer cannon, and it only gets bigger. Even if it's just a visual thing - nobody likes to feel like you are going with a slingshot against an army.
* The powerup level is completely reset on death. That's a no-no. If that happens on a boss, or a tougher level - the player is boned. Might as well make it a one-life game. Just take a level or two off the weapon and power-up-ize all bullets on screen.
* Not shooting should be rewarding. Maybe the cannon charges up a mega-burst when you release fire button?
* The powerups don't home in on your ship. Big mistake. This is bullet-hell - the last thing the player should do while surrounded by a cloud of death is hunt for powerups. Maybe the powerups get scooped up by the ship when fire is released ala Gigawing 2?
* The ship's collision feels a bit too big vertically. Enemies that fire horizontal shots seem to kill me with stunning frequency.
* Enemies that come from behind must give the player a lot more warning. Since the player ship mostly hangs out in the lowest 1/3 of the screen for the majority of the game - an advanced warning that it's about to get much less safe there is in order. Not necessarily an actual telegraph graphic, but the enemies could emerge much slower, or not start firing for a little while.
* I don't really care for the anime enemies, but it might be a personal preference. I'd much more prefer if the enemies stuck to being spaceships, since the player is piloting one.
* The music is great, however, how you store it is another issue. Your game is in early stages of development, barely has any art in it, and is already 90+ meg! That's insane, and I suspect it's because you are loading... .WAVs? Compress that shiznit! Oggs in Wav containers are the best choice, but you can also do some pretty compact MP3s if you play around with compression settings.

Overall though - solid code base for a shooter.

Which ship were you playing as? Raiden I presume? Because each character has their own unique hitbox, each of them is in a fairly obvious place (for instance, on the Raiden the cockpit is the hitbox) the hitboxes are also differently sized ever so slightly for each one. Raiden's being the largest (though still generously small).

* Enemies that come from behind must give the player a lot more warning. Since the player ship mostly hangs out in the lowest 1/3 of the screen for the majority of the game - an advanced warning that it's about to get much less safe there is in order. Not necessarily an actual telegraph graphic, but the enemies could emerge much slower, or not start firing for a little while.


This was starting to annoy me when I playtest, I think I will make attacks from behind telegraphed.

If you chose the middle "ship" you wouldn't be piloting a ship at all, one of the shmup series crossed over in this game is the bullet hell series known as Touhou, which the middle ship (Reimu Hakurei) and anime-style enemies and bosses originate from.

The music is .mp3s, the sfx are .wavs. I'd prefer not to compress anything at the moment because I don't want to horribly screw up the sound.

hey, I enjoy top down shooters, and coincidentally I am also making an airplane shooter that 'combines' several games too. Mine has like 10 levels with 7 planes to choose from, but I guess mine isn't as professional looking as this one (mine looks a bit too much like the 1945 tutorial).

Anyway I will play this and give u feedback

Ok I played it using all 3 planes and overall I think you have this game using predominantly the touhou style. In that case you should REALLY check out this game maker game: http://sandbox.yoyog...ve-mycelia-demo

It's really advanced and I think this is the sort of game you were aiming for in game maker. This game also has separated audio files to prevent a large executable, although I have no idea how that is done. But anyway, about your game:

Since I also made a plane shooter game using sprites from a bunch of different games, I really enjoyed how you have planes and fairies fighting alongside one another. It's pretty similar to touhou style; I dont think I ever saw any bugs or game-breaking problems, so this game is pretty decent as is.
However, I have a lot of suggestions that you would prolly be interested in:


- the gradius plane is overpowered. I understand you balanced it with a narrow range against the other planes, but its ridiculously high damage can take out bosses within a minute. - The raiden plane is very weak and underpowered. It has the smallest bullets, which I think makes it mostly inaccurate (and therefore weak). Between reimu (large bullets that can cover half the screen easily) and the gradius plane (bullet penetration and high damage), the raiden plane seems unbalanced and really crappy. Also, I understand you made the raiden's hitbox on the 'cockpit', which in this case is right in front of the plane. Using this plane is therefore really tricky too because bullets come head on and the hitbox is way in the front leaving me no time to react. I thought the hitbox should be in the plane center.
- Collected powerups should move much faster. It's kinda distracting how slow they move to keep up with your plane.
- Any plans on including the graze (blue) score powerups? As it is right now, bombing the screen of enemies will instantly max your attack power
- is Cirno destroyable? It seems she just fires icicles and timed out away.
- The after-death invincibility (if there is one) seems too short (maybe 1 second longer)
- some powerups from dead enemies spawn at the edge of the screen and are hard to see. Could you have them spawn inside the game area?
- I think monsters are too weak, usually dying from 1 shot, which I think gives the wide-range plane (reimu) a huge advantage. Even the large enemy planes are kinda weak.


If you agree with the above, then I hope I've given you good points and help game development in the right direction. I would appreciate feedback on my game too, if you have time. Your game is pretty good and I am lookin' forward to it!

feedback analysis time!

- the gradius plane is overpowered. I understand you balanced it with a narrow range against the other planes, but its ridiculously high damage can take out bosses within a minute. The bullets actually don't penetrate, the mini-explosions do. Couple that with the amount of bullets in a small area and yeah... In actual Gradius though, you did get an enemy penetrating weapon when you reached a sufficient power level. The high damage was actually the idea, slightly harder to play with on the stages, but effective on the bosses. Yes, the Vic Viper can take out asteroids, but only when it's powerful enough to fire the blue exploding shots, it's those shots that take out the asteroids. The other two fighters can take out asteroids, but only with bombs.
Due to the scarcity of Raiden sprites on the internet, including the classic Raiden bullets, the bullets of Vic Viper and Raiden are shared for now.

I might change things so that it's more of the "balanced" fighter I was hoping for.

I thought graze was when a bullet narrowly missed your hitbox (truth be told, I've never actually played Touhou, just seen Youtube play-throughs) so I wouldn't know what blue powerup you're talking about (still trying to gauge the meaning of the Touhou powerups besides "power" "bomb" and "1up")

Yes, If 1. your power is high enough so that at least two bullets are shooting directly forward. and 2. you keep holding the fire button down during the Cirno segment. you should be able to destroy Cirno (even easier considering the infamous Icicle Fall safespot is still there (just smaller))

Unintentional glitch there, the powerups aren't supposed to spawn offscreen. If that's what you're implying.

Well since you were good enough to give me such detailed feedback on my project I though I'd best return the favor!

Seems like a good start to what could be an enjoyable shooter.

The Good:
Decent variety of enemies
Nice boss attack patterns, challenging but never unfair
Good that there's a choice of ships (though I only tried Raiden)
Power up magnetism felt about right
Well presented

The not so Good:
Some backgrounds are pretty bland, and you could try better transitions when they change
Spread of Raiden bullets seemed off, unless I was fully powered it seemed to do more damage to the sides (2nd boss was killed easily as a result by sitting just diagonally below him and easily moving up to avoid attacks)
Also power up seemed random, sometimes it would give me a few bullets firing forward and other times 1 bullet firing forward and many at the sides - is this intentional?
Hitbox felt a little off, I agree with above poster it should be centered
Massive wait before 1st boss appeared
You might want to get rid of / change or reduce the sfx for enemy bullets, or at least make it so only some enemies make a sound when firing, effect was a little jarring (obviously personal oppinion)

I would stress though that most of the negatives can be easily fixed and many are probably down to my personal taste.

I'm interested to see how this panns out, you obviously have a love for the genre.

BTW tried v0.5 and played to completion
