Are GM games compatible with Windows 8?

There is a converter available for gm6 exes to vista, will there be something like that soon?

That's awful if I put a lot of hard work into a game only to have it alienated from users because of a Windows update.

Although GM Studio is compatible with Windows 8, I am having unexplained bugs with Studio and can't port my game over to Studio. Studio has given me bugs even when I worked on the game using Studio from the ground up, and frequently crashes while using the code editor for no apparent reason. Basically I haven't had any luck with Studio yet, so I'm sticking with 8.1 until Studio is relatively stable. Also, the game I am trying to port uses Extreme Physics, which might not be compatible. I am not sure if Studio's built in physics is exactly what I need and I have doubts on my ability to successfully convert the game over to Studio. My current version of studio is 2nd to latest version.

Anyway, this isn't so much Yoyo's fault even. Yoyo has a lot on their plate with bugfixing Studio and maintaining compatibility with other platforms. It seems Microsoft is playing a never ending game of catch up with the developers and Yoyo. This is a common problem in the past but if game maker can't run on Windows 8 then it's kind of Microsoft's fault for not being backwards compatible.

So...hopefully GM is compatible with GM 8, so all of the above doesn't apply.

Since YoYo announced yesterday they will support exporting to Windows 8 later this year, I imagine they will ensure Studio functions correctly on the platform as well. Two birds one stone.

I know Studio will, but will GM 8.1?

We have no plans to update GM8.1 with Windows 8 compatibility - having said that GM8.1 games work on Windows 8 already - we just have no plans to add anything to integrate GM8.1 with Windows 8 anymore than it currently is.

Any of the crashing you experiencing will (hopefully) be cleared up by that time, as long as you are reporting any bugs you are suffering.

You should help support and improve Studio rather than refusing to update, especially since you've bought it. Nobody likes the "I still use GM6 because I think its better" people, it just makes you look like a software pirate.

I just wanted to be accurate in my post. There is a chance that they bugfixed everything I mentioned in my post so I made sure to say I had the 2nd to latest version. Though to be safe I am going to wait for another update before I try again. Anyway I don't think Extreme Physics is compatible with Studio so it wouldn't matter after how many updates I still wouldn't be able to convert my game. I am going to ask Maarten Baert about that to make sure.

Yeah Game maker 8.1 works on windows 8, but if there are to many sounds playing at once, the GAMES crash.
Yes I know this is not Yoyo's fault, it's microsoft...
I just hope they will help us indie developers out and fix it...

I recently got a new computer with windows 8 and I'm finding a couple of game maker games get a message at specific locations saying this program has stopped working. Could be probably boiled down to certain functions in Game maker 8 or 8.1 will do this to windows 8 I guess.
