So with all the posts of "all I'm going to do is spam X to win" how is that changed in games where you see the enemies on the map? In most of those (Earthbound and Paper Mario come to mind) I just see an enemy coming and still just spam X to kill the mooks.
What do random encounters mean to you?

When I play RPG games, I like my random encounters to not always be negative.
Take the Fallout games for example. Random encounters can give quests, be merchants, be enemies, and even more.

Paper Mario: tTYD and Mother 3 both had a combo system so that you had to time button pressing to deal additional damage. Just spamming the command confirm button would just make you take unneeded damage, so taking your time in battle would actually be worthwhile. In most of those (Earthbound and Paper Mario come to mind) I just see an enemy coming and still just spam X to kill the mooks.

I'd say they're fine if they have variety. For example, it would be interesting if there were a few random mini-bosses that had some complexity. Once you defeat each one, they never appear again.

I used to like the main series Pokemon games a lot, but more recently I tried playing them again and I just couldn't stand the grinding and I had to stop. (I really enjoyed Pokemon Rumble and Conquest among other 'spinoffs')
That said, I love when games use RPG leveling and experience without this kind of thing. Recent examples include Skyrim, Borderlands, Two Worlds II, and Saints Row the Third, even.
So my point here is, I love the half of RPGs that aren't random turn by turn battles over and over.
