Hey, Not sure if this is the right forum for this, so please redirect me if not. Sorry if my English is a bit rusty.

I've tinkered around with Gamemaker for a while, I'm not an amazing coder or a graphics artist but I love writing scripts and characters for games and creating worlds. I have a couple of problems - I sometimes have a tendency to get distracted by a new project, and I'm frequently demotivated by my inability to make the ideas that I have. For that reason, I thought it would be a good idea to meet talented people within the community - possibly who also tend to give up on their projects - with the idea that working together we would firstly work fast and thus be encouraged more, and also that if one of us starts to get distracted the others can help bring them back on track. I don't want someone to draw or code my whole game for me - I don't mind working hard, and I work extremely hard while I'm obsessed with a project. Anyone who is better than me could give me advice and help working with the code, and if they're the same as me they could help me fumble through everything as I currently do :D.

I basically want to create a game which combines the best elements from the favourite games I've played, as well as adding in some new ideas and systems of its own. (Skip to the end here if you're easily bored.) My passion is SNES Rpgs, I suppose - Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Zelda: Lttp, anything of that style. I want to create a top down real time action rpg similar to Secret of Mana, perhaps borrowing heavily elements of the materia system from FFVII. I have the plot and game world mapped out in relatively good detail, which I'd be happy to elaborate on if anyone wouldn't be bored by it. The game would be seperated from other RPGs by using a Mass Effect style conversation wheel and choice system. At the start of the game, you choose certain personality variables for your character (arrogant or humble, serious or humorous, cold blooded or emotional) and conversation options are available depending on your character's profile. Throughout the game you would have to make choices which affect the game world.

The characters would be richly drawn personalities, with back-stories, and there would be a large range to choose from. After the introductory section, on which your character plays out a couple of childhood adventures in their village and the neighbouring forest, and then is finally recruited into a group to defend the Kingdom, you would be able to choose the order of your missions and which of your team mates accompany you. The game would support multiplayer teamwork, again akin to Secret of Mana. Your choices would affect your life, the lives of the team mates you choose from the many within the game, and also the greater world.

I have about 6 character ideas worked out, and then 3 or 4 would accompany you on individual missions. There is of course room to create more characters if they fit into the story.

The choices vary from something like finding Dragon Eggs when the highly dangerous dragons are supposedly extinct, and letting them hatch out or die... to choosing whether to cure your werewolf team-mate (his condition helps him out a lot in battles, but obviously comes at a price)... to choosing whether or not to recruit a skilled assassin or the knight that's hunting him.

The world is a mixture of human and fantasy, and revolves around 9 Elemental Palaces spread throughout it, each guarded by a different race. For example, the Dwarves guard the Earth Palace. So far, so typical, but it does have a few surprises in it, without straying too far away from what we expect in a RPG.

Basically, if there's anyone here who loves the concept of a multiplayer real time battle top-down action RPG with compelling characters and a well drawn out plot in which your conversations and actions affect the plot and the world of the game, please let me know and we can chat about the game. :) thanks

First of all, you need to understand that you have to develop practical skills at something, as i don't think anyone wants to be in a team with someone who just has ideas. Everyone in a team has ideas; the hard part is actually making things. So yeah, start learning to program, or to draw, or both, or something else. It's a lot of work, but it's the only way you'll ever get your ideas to come true (unless you're very rich and can afford to pay other people to make them, which you probably aren't). It's entirely natural to get demotivated when you face problems or are too ambitious, and so is giving up on projects. But as long as you learn something in the process, eventually and with a lot of work, you might be able to finish something. Apparently, the being able to finish what you start has a lot to do with maturity, which you gain from experience.

I've never tried this method of getting together with other people who aren't able to finish things yet. In my opinion, it won't do much of a difference. Projects will still be given up on by unexperienced people. Again, so long as you learn and keep working at it, you'll get something out of it. So my advice, which you've probably heard before, is start small. Aim for smaller projects, it's as simple as that. That's my two cents, I guess.

Thanks. I think I may have misrepresented myself, judging by you and the other reply - I have enough practical ability to make this game. I'd just make it a lot less neatly than more experienced creators, so I want to learn from other people working together with the same project.

Also, I have finished a few projects in my time. :D Including 1 fully functional online game (although I led a team, I didn't do everything individually.)

As to starting smaller, I've done a few smaller projects in Gamemaker too. But this would be my dream project - and I don't mind leaving it for a few months a few times along the way, if I started to make significant headway, I think I'd stick with it. But yeah, I just have a tendency to get distracted - but I'm not totally incapable of finishing something.

Thank you for the advice, in any case. It's true that this project is big - too big for 1 person who tinkers with this program and also works for a living to finish in anything less than years. But I find it more rewarding to work on something that, if finished, will actually be worth playing, than just a generic title. Building experience - well, I'll do that as I make this project. I'll probably have to go back and start from scratch, for all I know.

But no, I can offer more than just ideas and script writing. I can translate into a few languages, I can do basic sprites (or at least rip them and then edit them) and I can use GML. I'd just like to use it better.

There were portions of the first post made here that I sort of felt as though I myself might have written at some point. One of the only major differences that I think is worth mentioning is that I happen to feel that I'm a really good coder, and otherwise strong within the more "mathy" side of game creation.

I have something more or less pressing on my end during the rest of this month, but after that, I think that I wouldn't mind getting in touch with you to talk about the game or some other related stuff, if you'd still be interested.

Let me know if that's something that suits what you had in mind, and I'll be back in another couple of weeks to let you know how things are going on my end.

Hey. We have a little team together and we're making a start on the game, it's really coming together. Would anyone else like to volunteer or hear more information?

I have the same problem you have and mabye your right. I too am not good at the graphics/music side of game making but I think I am good at coding but whenever I hit a wall it is hard to motivate myself to climb that wall

Would anyone else like to volunteer or hear more information?

I want more information please :) I am interested to see whether making a team would help.
