I downloaded GM8.1 lite yesterday, since I wanted to try it out before I dropped any money.

Unfortunately, it fails during installation, citing the error:

Error opening file for writing:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\ GameMaker\UpgradeZip\upgrade.zip

Obviously, USERNAME is replaced with my windows username.

I've tried running as administrator, deleting the file and redownloading, rebooting the computer, and even downloaded it through a different browser, and still no dice.

I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

I too had a kinda same problem a while ago. But I remember I installed Microsoft .Net framework (version 2.0 or above) and that worked. But your problem can be because of something "inside the pc". I mean the compression program you use might be corrupted (As the upgrade.zip is a zip file) or such

Thanks, tried that, still no dice. Even went and installed all the windows updates and everything, still nothing. As far as I can tell, I've done everything but reinstall windows.

Not sure if it's really worth it, though.

I had the same problem, with Windows 7 64-bit. I did a system restore, with no results.
It appears this problem happens with 8.1+ only, I have GM8, and it works fine.
