Hello all.
I've recently started work on a new game which uses spite art.
However, the creation (especially animation) of spites seems very cumbersome. I'm able to make the spites look fairly decent, but when I attempt to animate them I often lose track of what they originally looked like and what they SHOULD look like in each frame of animation.
I'm very serious about the art work and I want to make high quality sprites that look professional.
Are there any guides or tool that would make this process easier?
Thank you.

I would use GIMP, and use the layer function for each frame of animation then copy and paste back over to gamemaker where you program the animating.
I would also suggest purchasing a nice wacom tablet but that is up to you. wacom tablets at least the one I have doesn't need batteries for the pen so saves on money in the long run.

I agree on the GIMP part (partially), but whether to get a tablet or not depends on the style. It's never bad, but if for example using a small 1x1 brush for pixel stuff, there's not actually any need for a tablet. In my opinion, GIMP isn't always the best animation tool. There are other much better for that. You could always check out "Spriter" or something similar...

Here's a thread I started a while ago that goes over/discusses doing pixel animation!

Hopefully you'll be able to gather something useful from there.
