EDIT: Scroll down to see mission trip post

So I finally got back from summer camp (BSA). I went to Cole Canoe Base for a week, and I managed to earn Law, Safety, Graphic Arts, Cinematography, Chess, Soil and Water Con., and Composite Materials. Ramming into other canoes with a kayak was quite fun.

Like every year, we had some torrential downpour. My tent was on a slope, so my tent partner and I dug a trench under our rainfly to prevent the tent from getting wet. Afterwards, I took a shower in the rain. The rain wasn't real good in getting out the shampoo though...

The most memorable moment was when I was in the LumberJack relay. I was supposed to throw a hatchet and dash to the person pulling the log. After throwing the hatchet, I tripped and fell on the ground. I did a barrel roll, lost my glasses on the ground, and kept on running. I caught up to my competitor (who was surprised I passed him), and beat him by 15 or 20 yards. My glasses were recovered without harm. Sadly, our log cutting duo did not come through for me, so we lost.

I'm leaving for a mission trip tomorrow to help the poor. It's going to be better having a solid roof over my head and minimal air conditioning. The best part is that, aside from me, my entire group is girls (my age). I guess I'll dig this topic back up when I return from that.

I'm glad you had fun there! I have several of those badges as well, and can say that they are a lot of fun to earn! Boy scout summer camp is always so entertaining.

Out of curiosity, what rank are you in boy scouts? How many badges have you earned?

Soil and Water Con.

That was among the least exciting merit badges I did. I don't know why. It just was ._.

Man what else do you do with kayaks?

Oh, that lumberjack relay sounds fun. Nice job. Throwing hatchets is pretty hard.

I'm an Eagle Scout myself. Always enjoyed Boy Scout Camp.

Life, no clue. I don't really keep track, even though they're within an arm's reach.

Cause multi-boat pile-ups.

Might be that the book for it is terrible and dry.

Super bump. Just got back from the mission trip. It was a really fun trip (though much hard work). The 'only guy' starting becoming a real trend even though there were guys in the other group that came. The week went really well, and we finished many of the projects given to us (re-paint a deck, clean a lawn, visit elderly/nursing home, etc.) The other guys told me not to bring more guys, and to bring back more girls, so I have a little mission between Mission Trips. The week was nothing short of amazing to say the least.

Welcome back. The trip sounds successful. Were your projects in the inner city, or rural? And where, exactly?

Either way, nice to see people giving some time of themselves to help others.

The projects were either small town areas or (less likely) suburban areas in Pennsylvania for the Appalachian poor. The job sites really ranged from a house that is declared unsafe to live in, a vineyard, apartment, and nursing home, to cover some of the places that were visited.

Helping them is a tall order. Seems like no matter how the government, private charities, or religious groups try to help them, the Appalachian people remain very poor.

Sometimes I wonder whether many them may actually prefer it that way. They have a very isolated culture and most of them don't see the benefit to education. So their poverty just continues from one generation to the next.

Wait, you were in Pennsylvania? What city/town if I may ask?

Somewhere around Clearfield, since I went to the fair on Tuesday.

Cool. I live about 1 and 1/2 hours from there. There have been a couple fairs these couple weeks.
