JETPACK HERO

Platform Shooter

https://dl.dropbox.c...32/ND v0.08.exe

This is not by any means finished. I didn't even manage to get a cutscene made in the end. That said, I enjoyed making this, and it's an alright game.

Controls:
Left/Right - move left/right
Up - aim diagonally upwards
Down - crouch

Z - Tap once: Jump. Push again and hold while in midair: Jetpack. The fuel in the jetpack is indicated by the orange healthbar in the top left.
X - Shoot. Hold until charged for a charged up, more powerful shot. The fuel in the jetpack is indicated by the purple healthbar in the top left.
C - Hold to stop moving and use the arrow keys to aim instead of move.

Stuff missing:
- Cutscene
- Tutorial
- Story stuff

Anyways, Enjoy the game.

How does it relate to the theme? There are always 2 worlds, the dying world and the new fabled world.
Does it have the handicap? Yes there is an introductory cut-scene.

Posted Image

Yes there are evil pirates too :woot:

I started the comp a little late, so the game is a little short, but nonetheless I hope you will enjoy it (I prefer to think of it as short and sweet ;) ). I know I had a lot of fun making it.

Author's Note: While I didn't have enough time to fully balance and test the game, the engine is fairly sturdy and working. Additionally, you'll note that the upgrade tiers are rather short. This is obviously due to time constraints, so expect much more upon full release. The instructions are included in-game. As a hint - I would recommend starting with a few upgraded towers. They significantly help your defenses.

This is my first jam! I had to do something last minute for my project, since i failed to finish the first version:

EDIT: PLEASE READ CONTROLS. I'm sorry I didn't put them in the game, but I made it in an hour.

My entry: Cherry Chomp
https://dl.dropbox.c...herry chomp.exe

Fail: Squimato
https://dl.dropbox.c...88/squimato.exe

About cherry chomp:
Use your mouse wheel to move the squid up and down. Avoid bombs. Get cherries.
1 cherry: +1 life
1 bomb: -1 life
(when the game freezes, it means you died. Again, this game isn't perfect)

It kind of sucks, but at least it's a working game.

Welcome back to this week's episode of...

11clock's Reviews

I am your host, 11clock, and I bring to you today a bunch of games! So let's get started, shall we?

A few notes before you see my reviews. Instead of using the 5 star system that most people use, I'll use a simple 3 star system. I'll judge based on the following categories: Gameplay, Polish, Audio, and Theme. Each star adds a certain amount of points to the total score, depending on the category. How much each star is worth is listed below.

Gameplay Star: 3 Points (Maximum Points: 9)
Gameplay is the fun factor, level design, and story (if there is a story).
Polish Star: 2 Points (Maximum Points: 6)
Polish is the neatness of the game, the feel of the game, and the lack of bugs and glitches.
Audio Star: 2 Points (Maximum Points: 6)
How nice sounding the music and sounds are and how well they fit with the game.
Theme Star: 1 Point (Maximum Points: 3)
How well the game fits the theme of the competition.
Handicap Star: 1 Point (Maximum Points: 3)
How well the game fits the handicap of the competition.

I'm not going to judge the handicap this time, since I'll probably not make it to the end of every game, and some of these games probably only have an ending cutscene.

Notice that Graphics isn't a category. This is because I strongly feel that graphics don't matter in games, and if I do actually rate the graphics, it will be extremely biased. I don't like realistic graphics and I love cartoon and retro graphics, so realistic games will score poorly and cartoon games will score highly. It's better if I simply don't rate this category, and it makes my rating more accurate because of my viewpoint on graphics and their importance.

If the game does so poorly in a certain category that it's pathetic, I'll give the category no stars at all. Games with no music will be given one star because that's still better than listening to absolutely horrible music and I can listen to my own music.

I am also NOT a very nice reviewer and I'm brutally honest on what I think of a game. Don't take my negative comments personally; remember that these reviews are only my opinions.

Top Votes:

Divided Existence by TerraFriedSheep 24/24
Out of all of the games, this one surprised me the most. The concept is ingenious, and well used. I highly recommend this game to everyone who enjoys an original puzzle game.

Morph Worlds by orange08 23/24
It's simple, and the concept has been used before. However, orange08 adds a new twist, the ability to turn purple blocks on and off. This adds an entirely new dimension to this type of game.

Chickens & Moles by GameDevDan 23/24
A fantastic puzzle game. I would of liked to see more interaction between the two areas, but it's overall a well done title.

Best Use Of Theme - Divided Existence by TerraFriedSheep
Best Use Of Handicap - Twice by Lune
Best Presentation - Conquerors by ChessMasterRiley
Best Devblog - N/A (I'm not going to vote this.)

GameDevDan's reviews n' votes.

As much as I dislike voting when I haven't played all the games, I figure it's fairer than not voting at all. I don't have bucket loads of games left to play but I might not finish them before Wednesday so I'm just going to vote now.

Votes

1st :- Double World by Venomous - 92%
Double world is a clever game with a similar game mechanic to quite a few other jam games but used in a different way. I'm not usually a fan of 3D GM games as they can look and play quite badly - but this was an absolute gem. The attention to detail in the graphics was amazing and the game play was challenging and fun.

2nd :- Asperous Flux by Darzoz - 87%
This was the first game that I really spotted as winning material in this jam. Again many entrants have used the same basic mechanic as Darzoz, but I don't think anyway executed it as well. Graphics were cute, game play was fun and play time was long, what more could you ask for?

3rd:- Knockdown by Centauri - 87%
Knockdown earns a place in the top three by being a unique concept in this jam executed at an awesome standard. Fluid animations, decent physics and a host of funny projectiles make this game a must play.

The bonus prizes

Best Use Of Theme :- Knockdown by Centauri

Best Use Of Handicap :- Twice by Lune

Best Presentation :- Hellscape by Viloen

Best Devblog :- Team Ultimollusk

Chris_Devls Votes (completed):

This was pretty tough, I hate deciding on a "best" anything without being told what it's supposed to be best at. But when I DO have to decide among incomparable things, (and I do this for everything), I ask myself, "If I had to choose only 1 of these to have access to for the rest of my life, and the others to never have access to again, which would it be?". Unfortunately this puts a slight emphasis on the fun and replyability factors of the games I'm looking to vote for, but I tried to be unbiased in that regard, so here are my votes nevertheless:

My votes go to:

1. Hellscape - Viloen
2. Nostradamus - holgersson1988
3. Little Comet - sisyphus
4. Sendling by DXSmiley (Awesome game, but too short :/)
5. Knockdown by Centauri (Very addictive, but no sound, and sometimes buggy. :/)

Best Use Of Handicap - After It's Over by Bill23

Very nice sleek world switching, loved the idea and the story. Would replay as i destroyed the worlds :( 16/20

Great music, if not a little repetative. Loved the gameplay and the fact that different coloured obstacles dont effect you 17/20

Well, I ran out of time to put together a massive list of reviews for each game, so I instead just provided scores in each section. If you want to know why your game got a specific score, feel free to PM me.

1st Place: Chickens and Moles by GameDevDan
Overall, I feel this game really encompassed this competition very well and provided a unique approach to a puzzler. While many of the basic mechanics used in the game have been done, the two worlds interacting within the puzzle was a fantastic addition. The graphics were also very well made given the time restrictions.
2nd Place: Dual Personality by Snail_Man
Morphing the characters together to create a mix of abilities...what an awesome concept! The graphics were also very consistent and well made given the short development time. An epic addition to the competition.
3rd Place: Virtual Trial by Blake
This game felt the most complete of all of them. I actually felt an attachment to the character in the game given the atmosphere and smooth, realistic game mechanics. The ending wrapped it all up and left me feeling devastated, but impressed. Well done.

Best use of Theme: Morph Worlds by Orange08
Best Use of Handicap: Insomnia by Chris_Devl
Best Presentation: Chickens and Moles by GameDevDan
Best Devblog: - Not a fan of this vote. I'm not entirely sure the purpose of this.

NOTE: Each main section, Concept, Execution, Presentation, Polish, Theme is given a score out of 100%. I then average the category scores and add the handicap as a bonus/extra-credit. Here is the math: ((Concept+Execution+Presentation+Polish+Theme)/5) + Handicap

Best Use Of Theme - Venomous
Best Use Of Handicap - Orange08
Best Presentation - True Valhalla
Best Devblog - Orange08

Reviews:

Double worlds: It's a very addicting games which allow you to control two characters to get out from a room. It has a great PERFECT graphics, nice 3D, easy puzzle makes you not frustated to play it. And what i liked the most, when the player stop walking, i feels it like looking at me, and saying, "Could you get me out from this room, please?", I feels it alive. 10/10.

Morphs world: Is an isometric game which about get out from a puzzle. Nice graphics (half of hand-drawn), Great idea, and a puzzle which not too hard to beat, but still fun. The puzzle is most likely; The player won't stop walking in a direction unless there's somthing in his pathway. Nice difficulty curves, and the music is really matching with the game. 9.7/10

Spectrum: Speechless! everything is nice PERFECT! the puzzle, the graphics, except the addicting factor. I don't know why, but i feels it's not challenging me after i get lost in a level. Doesn't like another game, this is not too addicting to play. Sorry to say.

Spoiler

The way I judge Jam games is based mostly on “HOW AWESOME WAS THE CONCEPT?” followed closely by “How well was it done/how fun is it?” cause as we all know, everyone’s totally rushed when they’re doing one of these 72-hour things and the execution sometimes doesn’t quite match what you envisioned. (so in other words, don’t mind too much if I complained about the controls lol.)

Since the point of the Jam is to experiment and a bunch of us are Jam regulars, I'm also adding another criteria: how unique it is compared to your other Jam games. I think creating something different and taking risks is more important than sticking to the same tried-and-true formula with a few changes, but hey, it's just my opinion. It won't affect my votes, by the way - it's just something I might mention in my review, so don't stress too much about it.

Also, if I missed something important about your game, please PM me so I can give you a fair review. :)

Good luck to everyone!

This is the second part of my review list. I'm doing all the games but, at the size of my reviews, it comes out to about twice the character limit of posts on this board. Like the other list, I'll be scoring the graphics, fun level, and general composition. The text is the important part, though. Also, here are my votes:

1. Double World - Venomous
2. Knockdown - Centauri
3. Morph Worlds - Orange08
4. Conquerors - Chessmasterriley
5. After it's Over - Bill23
6. Divided Existence - TerraFriedSheep
7. Dual Personality - Ultimollusk
8. Virtual Trial - Blake
9. Spectrum - 11Clock
10. 9999 - Newkill
Best use of theme: Double World, by Venomous
Best use of handicap: After it's Over, by Bill23
Best presentation: Conquerors, by Chessmasterriley
Best Devblog: Ultimollusk, for Dual Personality

Just as a reminder, none of this is personal. Writing bad reviews upsets me and makes me feel like I'm taking a dump on peoples' dreams. Sorry if your game gets a bad review! :(

Due to the file-size of the .zip, and my internet, I've been unable to review absolutely every game.

But I've played almost all, and loved every one of them!

So, without further adieu, here are my votes:

Out of the small hand full of games I've played...

My votes go to...
1. Twice - Lune - I love the plot and the breaking of the forth wall.
2. Makaijima - YAL - Great content, but suffers from flow issues (i.e. too hard too early)
3. Senseless - True Valhalla - Plays well and looks great. Excessive loud gun shots were annoying.
Best Use Of Theme - Lune
Best Use Of Handicap - Lune
Best Presentation - True Valhalla

My votes go to:

Dual Personality - Team Ultimolusk
This game is the best in my opinion because of it's great graphics, great gameplay, interesting story, and because it is an all around fun game. I did not take note of the sound track because I tested the game at night and had the volume muted, but it was fun even without music. I love the feature that allows players to combine characters, and only wish that this character crafting was used more, and you could implement it in more ways. The only thing that I would change is the spikes. I absolutely hate spikes :verymad: But besides that, everything is great!

Double World - Venomous
Double World is a fun puzzle game about escaping from a certain place. Despite this "escape from prison" type of game that is way over used, Double world is a good representative and none the worse for the stereotypical-ness. The game is set in a 3D world of two dimensions, each of which, only one of the two characters can travel in. Using these differences to your advantage, you must walk your two characters through the game and on to the end.

Morph Worlds - Orange08
Another puzzle game, Orange08 presents Morph Worlds, a game that contains more than it first appears. I had a good time with this one, and I am sure everyone else who enjoys puzzles will as well.

Best Use Of Theme - Venomous
Best Use Of Handicap - Team Ultimolusk
Best Presentation - Team Ultimolusk

Reviews:
Note on all ratings: All rating are given from 1 through 10. No 0's. So if a game has no sound, it will receive a 1, rather than a 0.
Note on gameplay ratings: Having a unique game will increase the gameplay score. So a well-made [insert very common game type here] may receive a lower score than a not-well-made game that is original in concept and gameplay mechanic.
Note on handicap ratings: I'll be rating the handicap based on how well the cutscene was made and how many there were. So even if you have a cutscene in the game, it may only receive a 3 out of 10. This is not because it didn't fit the handicap, but because I want to rate on how well the handicap was implemented, as well.

First off, very big thanks to the people who made this jam happen, and happen smoothly. Alot of great games have been made and everyone has benefited from feedback so its been a win win for everyone really. Well done to everyone who made a finished game, it takes alot of energy to stick it out for 72 hours and good luck for the final vote.
It's really been so difficult to narrow down my top 10 out of all the games uploaded.

I have played all the games and voted below. For some of the games I've provided comments.

VOTES

1) Nostradamus by holgersson1988
Nostradamus is a beautiful game with a unique concept. It isn't very challenging though and feels like you are guidied through each of the puzzles, but this can be forgiven as it is entirely to advance the interesting story. Overall a fantastic entry even if the mere mention of Nostradamus has me cringing at the quacks who claim he predicted the future... Decorated with the 2-4-1 Medal for Two Levels in One, the Grandfather Paradox Award for Altering the Past, the Graphics Medal for Looking Flawless, the Theme Medal for Original Interpretation of the Theme and the Gameplay Medal for Being A Triumph of 72 Hour Game Making.

Posted Image

2) Underworld by Oracizan
Underworld was fun to play with nice graphics and a great story. I really enjoyed playing it and would have loved it to have been longer, but short play time is to be expected from a jam game. Decorated with the Creepy Award for the Paranormal, the Artschool Award for Being All Dark and the Graphics Medal for Looking Flawless.

Posted Image

3) Chickens & Moles by GameDevDan
Can't quite believe Chickens & Moles was made in 72 hours! It is a solid game in every aspect with fun, but not particularly challenging puzzles. Decorated with the Graphics Medal for Looking Flawless, the Audio Medal for Sounding Flawless, the Theme Medal for Original Interpretation of the Theme and the Gamplay Award for Being Another Triumph of 72 Hour Game Making.

GOLD TROPHY
Morph Worlds, by orange08

The game was really fun, and the puzzles interesting. This was one of the few games I really enjoyed playing. Nice work with the level progression, too; that was done perfectly by introducing a feature every couple of levels. My only criticism is that it needs to be polished up a little with a nice menu, GUI, etc.

SILVER TROPHY
Double World, by venemous

The game was very clever, and looked great. Making it in 3D got you some bonus points! Puzzles were challenging, and level design was spot on.

BRONZE TROPHY
Divided Existance, by terrafriedsheep

A legitimately unique game! I must admit that, generally, I dislike platformer games, so I didn't FINISH this... But yeah, the concept was great. Nice one!

THEME AWARD
Divided Existance, by terrafriedsheep

See above.

HANDICAP AWARD
Twice, by Lune

You cheated a little in that it was entirely a cutscene, but I enjoyed it. A bit of warning that I needed to jump would have been nice, though!

PRESENTATION AWARD
Conquerors, by Chessmasterriley

The graphics were excellent. Enough said. I hope you continue to work on this game; add some more structures (such as a factory to increase production), more units (such as some repair drones), more turrets (allow the player to build more turrets, even?), defensive stuff, the ability to delete old structures to make way for more, the ability to pay a little extra to rush production, online multiplayer, etc!

DEV BLOG AWARD
Senseless, by True Valhalla

Uhhh... well written :P Yay!

my votes:
1: cheeseburger quest, okay, some people think that its too hard. really the reason that this gets my vote is because of its difficulty. i mean, I love hard games. always will. which is the main reason for my #2 vote

2: UTWPVG , okay. UTWPVG kindof takes diffuculty to the limit, with some people saying that they couldnt get past level 2. I beat it though (not just level 2) I think that I might be the first one. loved it. love the retro graphics (even though there not anything special, I liked them because they fit the game.

3: double world: the graphics are 3d. its beautiful. the puzzles are good. its not too hard but I liked it nontheless kindof what my game was supposed to be like :3. whatever

best use of theme: double world

best use of handicap: twice

Best Devblog - I don't read devblogs

School started a bit earlier than expected, so this time around there was A LOT of games I never got around to before the deadline. I'm very sorry to everyone whose games I didn't play. I'm aware that my second and fourth place votes do not have reviews. This is because I wanted to spend more time with each of them before writing it, but I ended up not having the time to do so.

In short, Viloen's entry was predictably of high quality as always. The man is a prodigy! I wasn't able to find save-points or anything so I never did very far in it and simply couldn't find the time to get more skilled at the game. Nonetheless I'll trust the game to keep up the high quality I found in the beginning and as such I'm voting it for second place. It was kind of a tossup between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th places, honestly. Still not sure I made the right decision there.

As for Divided Existence, the concept shined so brightly I'm willing to look straight past the game being made entirely out of ugly squares. I think the hitbox could use some work, as I got killed by spikes without touching them a lot. Nice music.

Reviews of the games I did play:
