So I was trying to open up Game Maker 8.1 standard, and it didn't open a window.

5 minutes later I open up taskmanager and I see that it has taken up 65 mb of memory and it still hasn't opened a window yet.

What the heck is going on?

I have the latest .net framework. And Game Maker has worked in the past.

I started GameMaker 8.1 this morning like any other day and the first thing that came up was a box saying that it received an invalid response from some server. The UI had come up in spite of the message, but I wanted to make sure this problem wouldn't repeat, so I closed GameMaker and tried to open it again. It hasn't since.

Now when I start GameMaker, it'll hang in my process list in the task manager slowly accumulating memory, but the window itself never shows up. It won't run even after I restarted my computer. I'm at a loss for what to do next - anyone have any suggestions?

Goes without saying I think that I was in the middle of a project when GameMaker decided to up and not work on me. Unless I've got a fix soon, my only alternative is to use GameMaker on a machine where this hasn't happened yet, which would be a little inconvenient for me.

Have you tried waiting for it to start up? For me, it sometimes takes several minutes before anything appears.

Yeah that's true. Same with me. Sometimes it'll take a while to load. But if you're using Windows 7, even while it's not appearing and still loading you should see the application's icon in the task bar. If you don't, then it's definitely not working.

What you could try to do is re-installing it? Maybe you deleted some files by accident.

I know that sometimes I have to wait before it comes up, and I have no problem with that. However, it's been at least 15 minutes and it's not coming up.

Would reinstalling it remove my registration with the program? And yes, I am using Windows 7, and yes, I do see the icon in my task bar, but no dice.

Don't uninstall, just install Game Maker, again, in the same folder. I'm sure that wont remove your registration.

You know, I realized this problem is affecting me as well. It could be something to do with the server or your Internet connection. As a workaround, pull out your ethernet cord and/or disable your wireless card/adapter and start Game Maker. It'll error, but it should still start.

This is going to sound weird, but GameMaker inexplicably... decided to work.
As in, I launched the program and I didn't expect the UI to appear, just stalling as it had been, but it did actually come up. I did what I did before, closing it and relaunching it, and it's launching just as it should. I didn't do anything!

That's fine and dandy and all, but I'd still like to know why it happened to begin with, especially if a more permanent version of the problem occurs to somebody else.

I have a feeling this is to do with the YoYo games server and licence verification... If it happens again, either be patient or try disabling the router, starting GM and then enabling it again. if it is a server problem, then the lack of a connection will skip the licence check and should start GM without problems.

That makes sense, and I'll definitely give that a try next time this problem occurs.

Thank you all for your suggestions and willingness to assist me.

Same problem.

(An error box pops up after long pause and says: The following tags were not closed: plist, dict, array. Line 0.)

Disconnecting from Internet allows GM to start normally.

Excellent. Thanks for letting me know!

This is a transient problem and should soon be fixed, but it's nice to know that there is still a way to continue using GM until it's resolved.

Thanks for the solution Nocturne! And thanks for making the topic KitaoL, I would've wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work.

Popping in again to say that this was an error message that popped up when I tried running GM as an administrator before my problem solved itself, though I don't think running it as an administrator caused it itself.

You're welcome, and I'm glad I did - I tried looking everywhere else for a solution first and when I didn't find one, I made this topic. Happy it helped so many other people!

Just as Nocturne said, there is a problem validating the registration key with YoYo servers, which sucks for me, I bought the license today, so when i typed the license this morning the game just crashed. I disabled the ethernet card and it works but, it works again as "lite", so i cant make any progress in my game since i bought it because i needed the full functionality :/.

Any idea when this Issue will be resolved?
