It's all about branding, making the brand stronger... the simplistic: title, character design, gameplay made a lasting impression to all kinds of people, people refer the game to their friends, and then friends unintentionally provides word-of-mouth advertising, then comes these merchandising companies who will further do the dirty work by selling your brand through many kinds of products that will even make the brand stronger global wide.
Arrrghh... what makes "angry birds" is everywhere?

Angry Birds is so popular simply because it's easy to pick up and play on the go. It may not be the most fun ever, but it's still entertainment. People love cheap entertainment.
