The sprite editor crashes, particularly when working with multiple frames after 5-15 minutes. It freezes in such a way that you can no longer save any of your work, and are forced to restart the program.

This has been around since I first started using 6, and still occurs in Game Maker 8.1. I've been through multiple computers, both slow and currently, extremely high performance, and it has occurred on all of them over the last 7 years.

Since I started making games with game maker, the sprite editor has always been what I've used, it's what I'm accustomed to and I prefer it to any other program for pixel art. Is there any way to solve this problem? Again, it is not a lack of ram, or processing power, or a bad video card. This happens all the time, and at this point, I'm kind of disappointed that such a problem has persisted for so long. Saving every minute and exiting and re-entering the program every so often is not a solution.

Any solutions?

Thanks for the response, but again, that's what I do anyway, I'm looking for an actual solution.

IF this as been since Posted Image i think it would have been fixed by now. You could always submit a comment/complaint to yoyogames and see if they have a solution. It would have been fix now if there has been multiple complaints. Make a video of you using the sprite editor that way yoyogames can know EXACTLY what you are doing or the program that way they have a better idea on how to fix this problem.

Well, looking at the task manager, game maker takes up memory every time you do something in the sprite editor, but the memory doesn't go down afterwards. It adds a lot more memory when you're zoomed in, and it adds even more if you toggle between frames. For me, it freezes when it gets to around 1800,000k, since I have multiple sticks of 2gb ram, I assume it freezes when it uses more ram then what is available on a single stick, perhaps.

For anyone who is interested, you can simulate prolonged use and memory build up by making 50 or so frames, zoom in all the way, and hold down shift + >, or shift + <, open task manager and you'll see GM's memory usage raise by like 10,000 everytime.

Well, you could always make a frame at a time and then import them all into one. Have you tried to set GM on High priority? or unless it's low. Try both in the task manager,

This isn't really something anybody should have to make a compromise for. It's more or less expected that a simple paint program shouldn't take more memory than running 15 instances of Photoshop CS5 combined.

Changing priority makes no difference, either.

Well I understand that, but life has obstacles and you must find ways around the problem Sometimes it's unwise to take it head on. If you want to take it head be my guess, contact YoYogames and they might have a solution for you. Posted Image

It's not up to me to find a way around the problem, it's up to Yoyo Games to fix it. Life isn't the same as commercial software.

If you're making a game and the game freezes when you crouch 50 times over the course of a session, you don't advise the player not to duck under things or encourage them to jump instead, you fix the problem.

Anyhow, reporting the problem now. Doesn't look like this is something that can be fixed.

This happens to me too. It just started with my laptop on GM8.0. I actually never had this problem on GM7 at all. I'll keep an eye on the ram some day. My laptop has crappy ram.

It only freezes on me when I click the green check box to get back to the window that lets me actually save the sprite progress in the GMK.

So this is what I can say to contribute:

SAVE YOUR WHOLE BLOODY PROJECT BEFORE YOU EVER ATTEMPT TO EDIT A SPRITE!

I can't count the number of times I had to redo any changes I made to a project because I mindlessly edited a 2-frame sprite without saving the project first.

Hmm, this happens to me every so often as well (gm 8) But I never paid it much attention. I always assumed it was my laptop...

It's even more frustrating now that I know it happens at a particular amount of memory. I have to have a memory monitor in my system tray just to keep track of how much "time" I have left. And I tend to run out every 15-20 minutes.

In my case, I can reboot my computer and still freeze on a 2-frame animation. It seems kinda random in my case. I've edited sprites with 10 programs (one of them Paintshop Pro and another an emulator) running in the background without freezing. Then reboot my computer, load GM, open a sprite, and FREEZE! :skull:
