Okay so I have this idea to make a fighting game when the Characters are monsters from classic horror movies. Not to mention Levels from scenes depicted from the movies.
But I'm not talking about movie monsters that are more modern like Freddy Krueger, or Jason.
I'm talking about classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstien's monster, and the Wolfman.
I want it to be less a arcade fighting game and more like platform fighting game.
I want to call the game "The Monsters Brawl"

Anyway here is the list of the 13 monsters I want to work with for now.

Classic Monsters (These are the mostly black and white screen era monsters I want to use)
(1) Dracula
Posted Image
(2) Frankenstein's Monster
(3) The Wolfman
(4) The Mummy
(5) A Zombie (Female)
(6) Dr. Jackal/Mr. Hyde
Posted ImagePosted Image
(7) Gillman (The Creature from the Black Lagoon)
(8) The Invisible Man
Modern Monsters (These Monsters are the modern versions of the classics only different, And no the Vampire is not a sparkle one.
(9) Modern Vampire (Female)
(10) Beastly Were Wolf
(11) Fast Zombie
(12) Headless Horsemen
Posted Image
Iconic Concept Monsters (These two are monsters that have appeared in various media book don't have a single idenity. They are just your run of the mill kind.
(13) Ambiguous Alien
(14) Demon

Next are the locations of some one the Levels I want to put in.
1. Dr. Frankenstien's Lab
2. Dracula's Castle
3. A Boat in the Black Lagoon
4. The Mommy's Tomb
5. Random Graveyard
6. The Dark streets of London
I'm also thinking of putting in assist characters that pop in and help on player or hinder their rival player. If i can think of enough characters, they don't have to be monsters either. Here are a couple I have thought of.
1. Igor
2. Reinfield
3. Vanhelsing

So give me some suggestions, here are some one the area's I could use it in.
What monsters to put in, descriptions of what you think the Levels should look like, What assist characters to put in?
Not to mention anything else you can think of thats relevant.

Just some random ideas I have for now, maybe they can at least spark more ideas for other people. But I'm imagining a monster version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, sounds neat!

Characters:
Sandman
Evil Tooth Faerie (scary looking dark faerie that throws bloody teeth at ya)
Troll or Goblin
Chupacabra
Witch with flying broomstick
monsters from other places around the world?
mythical monsters like the Minotaur?

Levels:
Dark Forest
Hell
Farm at night with crashed ship in background
Stone bridge over a river
Front gate of haunted mansion, maybe see ghosts walk by the windows or headless people
Nightmare Land, something inspired by Salvador Dalí paintings

I'm not monster literate enough for assist ideas.. :(

Just pointing out - make sure these monters arent trademarked. I am almost certain Godzilla is (which you dont have listed).

Dont want you to work hard and get the game half done and learn you cant use the characters or the name

The trademark / copyright thing is going to be a problem... you might be able to get away with something like Dracula since it's an old book and probably in the public domain, but The Mummy was created by Universal Studios and probably still has copyright on it (since they've reused the concept in the 1999 Mummy movie)
As a matter of fact, even if hey hadn't remade it then the copyright still probably wouldn't be expired... movie copyrights last a long time. So any character that was created for a movie and not based on a book is probably not legally usable.

And you probably can't use "Brawl" in the title... even though it's a generic term then that doesn't mean it hasn't been copyrighted or trademarked or anything... and I'd assume that it has been since Super Smash Bros. is so popular.

Other than that, this game sounds pretty cool.
For Imhotep's assist character, you could use Ancksunamun (sp?). Every time he dies then she could read from the Book of the Dead to revive him.

First I would like to say thanks for you guys for your responses, But after getting a lackluster response from everyone I told about the game personally I have decided to drop the idea. And go back to the Project that this one spawned from. I would have stuck with the original one if I hadn't come to the conclusion that I didn't have the spriting skill or resources to make the characters. But while looking for sprite resources for The monsters Brawl I found what I needed.
So I'm going back to the other project, and incase anyone is curious this one is pretty much the same Platform fighting game only with character's level and story based on a book I'm just begining to write, I doing it because I want my characters to come to life.

Anyway like I said thanks.
Also I would like to clear some stuff up, from what I understand, even if I'm using copyrighted stuff, as long as I don't make money off it even if I am infringing things I doubt the holders will take the time to sue a tiny krill like me in giant ocean. I mean GM users are making fan games of copyrighted material all the time, Even my friend Dantheman(Dan Fornace) made a fan game called Super Smash land.
So you see where I'm going with this. Also You can't Trademark a normal word or phrase like brawl, otherwise Trump would have gotten the rights to the phrase "Your Fired". However If I was to use Brawl the same way as Super smash bros, then I could be in trouble.

That is true for the most part, but there have been cases where big companies have shut down fan-games before... typically as soon as the game becomes somewhat popular and they find out about it. Not always though, and it depends on the company (some are more tolerant than others)... either way it's still technically illegal.

So you see where I'm going with this. Also You can't Trademark a normal word or phrase like brawl, otherwise Trump would have gotten the rights to the phrase "Your Fired". However If I was to use Brawl the same way as Super smash bros, then I could be in trouble.

Yeah, it depends on the phrase and the situation. Normally you can't trademark / copyright a general phrase like that, but there have been some exceptions. Especially since SSBB is a fighting game and this would be a fighting game... if they do have some sort of trademark on it then obviously it's similar enough for it to be in violation... so if you were going to make this game and use that in the title then you might want to check that out first (although even if you did violate a trademark then most likely they'd tell you to change the name, not shut down your game for good)

headless horseman

Right thats the guy that I had wanted to put on the list but forgot to. He is one of my favorites, I'm even writing a story that he is in out of his normal context thought.
I guess you guys didn't read my earlier post, I said that I'm not going to do this exact project anymore.
However now that more people are showing interest in the game I'm going to continue with it. Yay
Now about godzilla, much as he is my favorite, and I like him so much I tried to make a godzilla version of Super Smash brothers before but stopping in the middle of development. But I don't think he would work for this game because I'm trying my best to keep the monsters to scale and Godzilla is skyscraper high how do I explain him being the size of Frankinstien? or some one else.
As to mach3000 list, I would like to point out that I'm only using monsters that are from Iconic movies and even then classical ones.
I just doing the modern monsters so people can decide if new beats old for them selves.
Lastly if any one should have a problem with the title it would be the Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation.
Because the name of my game is a joke and the title of their movie "The Monster's Ball".

I honestly don't see a problem with using those graphics right now as a "placeholder". Later, when the game is almost finished, then replace with new graphics. That way, you don't have to worry so much about trademarked. Oh and MasterElement, do us all a favor and DON'T let the vampire be all sparkly.. Not everybody like Twilight.. lol

Maybe if my spriting gets better then I will try to make sprites from scratch but right now I can't do that yet.
Also of course the vampire is not sparkly lol, I believe I already addressed that in the first post.
Speaking of the vampire I don't know how to dress her? I don't want her to just wear plain clothes like all the Vampires do these days in movies and TV.
But the only clothes I could think of is goth, but would that be over doing it?

Anyway here are the first example sprites of monsters that I made using base sprites.
These ones require problably the lest amount of effort, especially the last two. They where already so close to what I wanted already if not even funny.
Dracula
Posted Image

The Headless Horsemen
Posted Image

Dr. Jekyll
Posted Image

And Finally Mr. Hyde (I will be working on him some more.
Posted Image

More to come, I also think that the mummy will the hardest to make, all those bandages.
I added the sprites in to the monster list in the first post. So you can keep track.
And if you have any ideas for the sprites or suggestions let me know. Especially for hyde.

I have made some more sprites of the monsters in the game I'm making.
First is the Classic Zombie
http://i1107.photobu...ZombieNecro.png

Next is the Beastly were wolf
http://i1107.photobu...WolfExample.png

The classic wolfman
http://i1107.photobu...fmanExample.png

The modern vampire
http://i1107.photobu...ireExample2.png

And finally the Fast moving Zombie
http://i1107.photobu...mbieExample.png

Some could really use some help, especially the last two.
If you guys have any ideas on how to improve the way they look please tell me?
