I was just on Facebook and noticed that on the YoYo Games Page it's spelled "GameMaker".
Then I went to yoyogames.com... it's "GameMaker".
Then I come here... it's "GameMaker".
But I could've sworn it was "Game Maker". Even my copy of Game Maker has it named "Game Maker". When did this name change occur?!

Also the name of these forums is inconsistent. Sometimes it's listed as "Game Maker Community" and sometimes it's "GameMaker Community"...

I forget when the name change occurred... but it did.
Though they are the same thing program, YoYo changed it to GameMaker officially a while ago. If you ever have doubts: 'GameMaker' is right, 'Game Maker' is wrong.

It matters because "GameMaker" just looks weird. Probably because of years of seeing it written as 2 words... I think back when I first started using it then I incorrectly referred to it as GameMaker, lol

I think it was officially changed around the time GM:HTML5 beta was released. There are probably many reasons why this was changed, some things that come to mind is finding it through search. The term "Game Maker" could return results for "Game" and "Maker", but combining it makes for a more refined search.

Another possibility could be the ability to copyright the game. For example the tv channel "sci-fi" changed their name because they could not copyright the name, so it was changed to "SyFy".

The first time it was called "GameMaker" was in a Glog post I think by Sandy if I recall correctly.

I thought they were renaming it to make it look like a brand name or something.

It really doesn't matter to be honest.

So do I. I always name my variables like 'myVariable', not 'my variable' (since it's not allowed) so I find that GameMaker gives a more programming-ish feel... It would really look weird if they called it game_maker though.

It still reads the same, Game Maker or GameMaker, it's just the look that changes.. Which is so minimal I don't think it's worth any fuss. If YoYo did it so they could copyright the name than props to them.. If they didn't, well, its a pretty minimal change, we still get to have the Game Maker or GM title we all love so I don't see any harm.

The name changed at GameMaker 8.1

One of the motives might have been a desire to tademark GameMaker recognising that "Game Maker" is to generic to trademark. In reality, simply removing the space and conjoining the two words as a single word is typically not enough to get around the trademark laws.

I believe the primary motive for the removal of the space was purely that "GameMaker" looks like the name of a program, whereas "Game Maker" looks more like a description.

Although I can't be sure, I don't think "GameMaker" is trademarkable either, not only since it too is pretty generic (I know more generic terms have become trademarked, but it's not common), but it also shares the name with a few other programs with the same purpose that share that name (Example 1 | Example 2).

I like "Game Maker" better than "GameMaker".

They could just call it GM, like:
GM:Windows
GM:Mac
GM:Studio

For some reason, for me, saying Game Maker makes it sound more aimed towards kids, and not professional. I honestly have no idea why.
