@FamousJellyfish I agree with some of your points, except for your entire "bad games as examples" argument. I'd like to argue that a game being bad is never, ever, a fact, but an opinion. I happen to like every single game I listed above. I made sure to only compare games that I like so I wouldn't be unfair. You only say it's a bad comparison because I'm comparing games that you happen to not like. The comparisons I'm making are completely fair.

Meh i like both. i really don't care about what the camera position is like or the amount of dimensions being rendered. all i care about is if the game is good.

however i do have to point out, certain times of games work well with certain types of camera positions and depth. an FPS game is a totally different experience from a 2D side-scrolling shooter. (Contra vs. Halo) both are great experiences but they are very different experiences even if they have similarities in the gameplay, adding that 3rd dimension changes the experience a lot and i don't think it takes away from it at all. it lets you explore a more realistic world and can be a great system for many different genres of gaming.

OP, I feel like your latter three reasons are..contrived, to say the least. The first reason is really the only one you need.
I don't prefer either.

Although, have you heard of the game Fez? It's 2D and 3D at the same time. It is also not 2.5D.

I've never played it, but I really want to.

I have seen reviews of the game Fez, but from watching some gameplay videos it looks kind of bland. The perspective switching is a pretty good main mechanic based on what I've seen, but that's really all that stands out to me. Also, the game isn't available for PC.

Oh, and here is another reason why I prefer 2D. Simplicity! :D (This does not count the strategy games...)

Just a note that I've never said that I don't like 3D. I just have a preference.

I do agree with a lot of points made by the people here. I guess it all depends on the game's genre.

I don't prefer one over the other in the grand scheme of things. Some games work well in 2D and some work well in 3D (some work well in both!). Since you (OP) seem to like platformers, I can understand why you prefer 2D. I haven't played one 3D platformer without camera problems. But can you imagine playing an air combat game in 2D? It just wouldn't work.

1: Really? really? I mean, I get problems with 3rd person camera as well, but the first person camera, I find just fine. I don't know if it's due to the fact that I have very good spacial awareness, but I can often judge a character's position and size by sight (and arguably by experience) as well. I find your argument on first person games invalid.

2: Yes.

3: Again, really? Does this mean you find it difficult to memorise the layout of your house, or your town, because these locations exist in a three-dimensional universe? Would you find it significantly easier if they existed in a two-dimensional universe?

4: Yes.

Not much to say at 2 and 4, as they're just facts. 1 and 3, I find invalid. Possibly because I have great spacial awareness. However, you have ignored the advantages of 3D games, which you must not do if you want a balanced and educated opinion. In fact, you should be biased toward 3D games to compensate for involuntary bias.

My own opinion is neutral; I decide whether a game is good based on how well it plays, not how many dimensions it has. For instance, I enjoy 3D games like Minecraft, Portal and Team Fortress 2. But I also enjoy 2D games like Plants vs. Zombies, Purple and Dynamite Jack.

meh, I think the camera in Banjo Kazooie is terrible. But messing with it is kind of a minigame in of itself, and without it would make the game too "in your face". What I mean by that is the world would become too "navigable", and you could fly through the game without really feeling any sense of being in the game. Secrets would be easy to find and it would not seem like the game had any substance, that you were just a floating bear on roller skates sliding against walls like you were made of plastic.
