On the internet you are anonymous. This anonymity has peculiar effects on how people interact with each other; absolute safety from consequence means you can say anything you want. I see the negatives of this appearing in Youtube comments. People who likely are decent in real life lash out at others in ongoing, ceaseless tirades. The positive effects I can see in well-moderated forums like this one, where members are surrounded by those of similar interests. Being able to read over what you're about to post ensures you can be articulate as possible.

For me, I don't think I'm any less reserved online than I am in real life, but far less austere. I'm notably quiet in both realities; though I check these forums regularly I only feel the need to post if my input would actually be of use. I have a nervous habit of re-reading anything I'm about to post several times.

Post how you think your "online self" deviates from your "real life" one.

Eh...I like to think they're about the same. My typing style even matches how I really talk most of the time.

there isn't much difference from me online to offline. i'm a brutally honest person. the only difference for me would be how little i talk to strangers offline while online, everybody is a stranger yet i still talk.

EDIT: you might see me say "lol" online a lot, this is different from the real me as i almost never laugh unless i'm watching a really funny anime or comedian.

I'm not totally different, but I'm not really shy here, but I'm one of the most shy and quietest people you would ever meet. I also like to look over my posts before I actually post.

I actually have more clear thought and I'm in control online.

If I notice I've said anything bad, I can change it.
I'm more easily ignored if I irritate people online.
In real life, talking has a lot of other unread rules regarding it. I don't have to really watch my speed, pitch, or tone on here. If I have nothing to say here, it's not as if I'm sitting around doing nothing. Because I can participate in multiple conversations.

Great question for the Off Topic forum (+1).

I'm totally different online versus real life.

In real life, I'm somewhat egotistical. And I can be very sarcastic when people make stupid comments. Also, I like needling people when they screw up -- especially if they're normally smart people.

Nothing like my online persona.

I'm mostly the same, I usually type something as I would say it. I also joke alot and take things less seriously in real life, mostly because online you can't throw your tone of voice or body language in with what your saying, and I obviously can't use someones tone of voice or body language to tell what they mean either, so a joke or sarcastic remark can be taken seriously. That's why I like smileys .

But yeah, I'm a lot calmer online than in person. So if I get annoyed online, I usually let it pass, and only talk back if I need to. But in real life I get a lot angrier a lot quicker when an annoying kid won't shut up .

Oh, and in real life I tend to overuse my sarcasm if someone says or does something wrong. And when explaining something I like to use my hands a lot too, to try to get the point across.

In real life I often go completely spasticrazy and shout random things at my friends, expecting them to listen to me. However, when I'm not doing this I'm actually quite a sensible person :P

On the internet, I'm usually quite serious but sometimes I can be a little sarcastic (nothing compared to chance, NPT or Rusty though xD).

I'm very intimate and personal with the select few I call my friends on the internet. I'm very nice to them as much as is possible, It's literally my #1 rule in life when it comes to them. But alas, this applies only to those I know on the internet. IRL, I'm cold, bitter, and you probably won't want to meet me unless if we spoke over the internet previously.

Today, I've told two people the following things. To A kid, who did something wrong, I told "Go tell your dad what you did and then get yelled at", then I told my friend that he's "as sweet as maple-syrup". x3 Ok, that's a bad example. But you know what I mean.

I'm the same on the internet as in real life.

I've been thinking about this for a few minutes, and I can't figure out anything else to say.

I feel more comfortable approaching random people online, I think in most part because I can get to understand their train of thought before actually communicating with them.

I don't like investing time in people if I know I'm going to dislike them. Online I can evaluate them before bothering, so I end up connecting with more people that I actually like, and therefor being more social.

As for how my personality is different online...well I'm probably less restrained or worried about offending anyone, and I'm more aggressive in my response to stupidity. Stupidity and physical violence often go hand-in-hand, so I avoid it in real life, but online I can address it without having to worry about consequences.

I am a lot quieter and shy in real life, but not here. That pretty much sums it up.

Pretty different. When I'm online, I talk more than I do in real life, and to more people. I have found that I talk better online, especially on forums like this one, because I can take my time to think out what I'm saying. This makes debating much, easier, useful, and educational.

Like roy said, I don't have to worry as much about saying the wrong thing on the internet, because I can go back and change it(unless I use facebook).

I'm also less sarcastic on the internet.

Online, I am very straight-forward. (At least I think so.) In reality, I always get off topic. For example; Online: Pencils write things. Computers compute things. WARNING: SKIP THE NEXT PARAGRAPH IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ SOMETHING COMPLETLY POINTLESS.

Reality: Pencils write things. Speaking of pencils, I need some new ones. What kind should I get? #2? Bah, I don't know. I'll just get all of them. Wha? Wait? Oh yeah, my example. Pencils write things. Oh darn! I already said that. Ok, ok. Computers compute things. You know whats funny? We are on the GM forum! And what do we use to code? Computers! Do you have a PC or a Mac? I prefer PC, honestly. Wait, what was I talking about?

Yeah... was this post too long?
