The competition has ended

Video by Davve

Rules

- You may only submit one entry.
- You may work in teams (Maximum of 4 people).
- Your entry may be updated upon receiving feedback, however all updates after the deadline will not be rated.
- the only pixel colors that are allowed in the game window are the colors of your chosen scheme.
- Your entry may be of any genre (refrain from using sexual and drug-related content).
- If you would like to be a judge you must PM me and are then also disqualified from the competition (judges can not win).
- while not necessary it would great to see a daily update log of you game.
- Have fun, please do not break this rule, as it is the most important one.
- Although not required, streaming your development is always appreciated

- The competition starts on June 22nd (6/22/12) at 6pm GMT and lasts for one week until June 29th, I will post a message one hour prior to the comp - end letting everyone know.

- STATUS: The Comp. has started!

Go Make a Game!

RGB Judges
- EIVGL
- FAAAEBS
- Craig321
- WMCD
- Not taken
- NeoTalon
^ This is updated on a daily basis. (mostly)

Color Schemes

- There are three different color schemes that you may use, but once you choose a color theme, you may only use those colors in your entry.
- Using colors that are not part of the color scheme that you chose will result in severe point deduction of your score.
- You may not use transparencies other than 255 or 0 (opaque or fully transparent).

A side note: The palette files are meant to be read by Paint.net

Oak: A scheme for creative mindsets
Spoiler

Retro: A scheme for experienced designers and developers

Orbit: A very difficult scheme to adapt to

Voting

Voting for RGB will work in a rather linear way:
- 20 Points are awarded overall
- Points are based on the average of all participating Judges
- Every game must have received votes from at least 2 of the 8 Judges

Points are awarded on following categories:

Game play - 8 points
Style / Use of Color Scheme - 4 points
Atmosphere - 4 points
Innovation - 2 points
Polish - 2 points

Total - 20 points

I am presuming that an average game will score around a 12 - 14.

Really sweet idea, I'll join in for sure.

Perhaps "Oak" should have less colors?

The reason Oak has so many colors is because it is meant to be easier, although I do agree and will therefore remove 4 colors from Oak.

I like this.
How will entries be entered? A post in this topic?
Can we use transparency? What about texture interpolation?
Those two things can make your game use more colors.

Yes, the same goes for updates

Can we use transparency?

No, only alphas 0 and 255

What about texture interpolation?

If you are referring to dithering(see image) then yes it may be used, if you are referring to the option under game setting, then yes, that may also be used, although it kind of takes away from the challenge. Dithering

This sounds like a really neat Competition.
I'm loving all these mini-comps around the GMC now! They're great fun to enter!

I assume that the competition winner will just receive a badge and the advertisement of their game - like the others?

So yeah, I might wip* up a game! The competition is just in time for my end of semester break, so I'll try and make something extra special :3
So count me in! :D

Thanks for posting and giving me something to think about :P

* Get it?!

Yup. Joining. Quite an awesome idea, basing the competition around colours. Deftinitely using the Orbit theme because I'm an awesome pixel artist and all that. Just a question...
What about engines? May one use one? 'Cause I wanna do a platformer, something I'm not good at doing. If ya can't, I'm screwed. Unless I make sure to learn some platforming programming and start prototyping. Still, there's one problem if engines aren't allowed. I'm probably making a platformer. If I can't use engines, I'm gonna make prototypes for the platforming engine. When I'm done and the competition starts, my code will probably be close to copy-pasted into the game. Therefore, I've basically made an engine anyway.

Looking forward to the competition! Gonna be fun to see how good I actually am with pixel art.

Edit: Uh... Your coulours have weird values. I mean, "132, 66, 0". Where'd that come from? Should be something like 128, 64, 0, for example.

Can I judge?

Yes you may, I will shortly add you to the list, I still have to update the 'Voting Section'.

What about engines? May one use one?

Yes you may use engines, but you may not re-use any of the sprites.

Can you tell me which theme it came from? The BB code is really messy, I am sure I did something incorrectly.

Orbit. Anyway, I suggest you edit all numbers to be evenly divisible by 32 (0, 32, 64, 96, 128, 160, 192, 224, 255) (255 isn't but you should use it). Right now, I see most are quite close to mentioned numbers. Being the slighly OCDish person I am, I beg you to fix those numbers.

I will soon, but considering how long it takes( Colored Square, #color code, FFcolor code, RGB values, and the .txt file) to be changed for color individually I will not be doing this right now, expect it to be done soon though.

MODS: I am asking whether this topic should be moved to 'competitions', the reason I posted it under challenges was because it was originally not meant to be a competition.
