Sonic was originally designed as a competitor to Mario, but was made to be "cooler" and "faster" and honestly, I'd say at least at the time He succeeded, at least until the change to 3d, where things were forced to slow down some.
@11oclock, the speed was the point. I never had a problem running into enemies, because when on level ground, you can pretty much roll into a ball when you feel like it, and the main things that would kill you then would be spikes.

Reason why things like physics change in these games over the years is because of the developers. the problem with big company games is that it's not the same developers anymore. The developers that made Sonic 1 or Sonic 2 are probably not working any position within Sega or Sonic Team anymore and publishers like Sega hand their IP's off to different dev teams all the time and dev teams change often. So Sonic 4 was most likely made by a bunch of recent college graduates with little experience or were given very little time to work on the game.My point is that the sonic 4 series is horrible(or at least the first one is). The physics in sonic 4 were horrible, but Sonic 1's physics were better (seriously, the sonic series is getting worse about physics) and sometimes when I hit an enemy I'd lose rings although the enemy was supposed to die.
I hate this kind of development because i like to think that the original developers should own the IP as they did all the work. it's like an artist painting something and than having the guy who sold him the canvas take it and claim it as his. Because of this bad business, franchises dramatically change over the years as it's handed to different people all the time. People who don't know what to do with the IP or people who don't care about the IP.
IP = Intellectual Property.

I find the franchise VERY repetitive. I mean, every game is almost the exact same. At least mario occasionally throw some new twist into their games.
the only sonic game I have ever enjoyed is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. That game was really, really good. Other than that though, I've never enjoyed a sonic game, even though I've owned a lot(Sonic Riders, The original 3 games ported to the DS, etc).

Has far as i know, the physics were fixed for Sonic 4 Episode 2, but can't say for certian that they are identical to Sonic 1, 2 etc.
When it comes to speed, i can't really agree with "The 3D games go so fast that i bump into enemy and die." i Would say that is also the case with the 2D games, given that you can't see very far.
And when it comes to variety, i can't agree with the series being repetitiv, there is a big difference between games like SA2:B, Sonic Generations, and Sonic and the Black Knight.

actually if you run fast enough you kill your opponent (boost, roll, spin dash or homing attack whilst running)
I used to be a Sonic fan, but not anymore. It's not because of the newer Sonic games, it's because I've come to not like the speed that Sonic moves. *runs at max speed* "LOOK AT MEH I MOVE SO FA-" *runs into enemy and dies*
I will never forget sonic adventure2 it's so freaking awesome

Here's a question I have. Is it at all possible to replay levels in Sonic Adventure DX? And I mean re-play the original mission, not the second mission associated with the level (ie: beat it in X time)? I remember wanting to replay some Sonic levels, but without the annoying secondary mission. Just play through the original level.
I prefer DX over 2 actually. I LOVED the adventure stages. I spent an hour just exploring some areas. True, it got a bit annoying, but it was so neat. Plus, I feel the levels in DX are longer than in Sonic Adventure 2.
Sonic Heroes was a neat concept, but a flop overall. I guess it was an okay game though... just didn't have that same allure as the older 3D games.

Do we just get entertained by exactly the same thing or something? I say that because this is virtually the same as my opinion.I prefer DX over 2 actually. I LOVED the adventure stages. I'd probably play 2 more than DX on account of the chao gardens being better, though.

Agreed again! Although part of the reason I'm binging on DX is because I got it last year, as opposed to 2Battle, which I got about 8 years ago. Wow. I had that game for almost 10 years? Whoa.Do we just get entertained by exactly the same thing or something? I say that because this is virtually the same as my opinion.

I've played Sonic Advance 1, 2, and 3. Advance 2 was easily my favorite. 3 was a lot of the gimmick, which I really didn't like. Advance 1 was a bit too slow.

Again, I completely agree.I've played Sonic Advance 1, 2, and 3. Advance 2 was easily my favorite. 3 was a lot of the gimmick, which I really didn't like. Advance 1 was a bit too slow.
Sonic Advance 2 made its way into my childhood. I remember the day that I unlocked the Tiny Chao Garden. I had so many rings, I got a chao to level 99 in everything in the same day. Good times.

I don't like 2D Sonic games as much because when you first play them, you can't see much in front of you, and then you unfairly run into spikes/enemies randomly, so it pretty much depends on memorization to beat them. Plus you had limited lives which makes you start the games ALL over. Basically there's just not as much freedom that allows for replayability like the Adventure games.
I love the Adventure levels because they are much funner to look at, and easier to 'sightread' since you have a much better field of view.
