I started working on this project 2 weeks ago.enhancing graphics and creating maps.
The gameplay of this game is going to be a metroidvania or castletroid where you can freely explore the map and need to obtain item powerups to access new areas.
inspiration for this game is mainly zelda 2:the adventures of link and the wonderboy series.it also include elements from adventure island,Ys,startropics and metroid.
I'm now building the rooms in gamemaker and expanding each area.
Made new sprites for link such as being knocked down on the floor,climbing ladders,dying,dropping bombs,throwing the boomerang,using magic,lifting objects and riding epona as well as walking in four directions in case of overhead view.
I'm slowly learning how to code with GM to add the new features.managed to add a heart and rupee counter,create various enemies,make moving platforms,make animations for various field sprites and many more.looking at the coding in the ''hello engine'' for various functions is very helpful.
about the music;it is very easy to find very good remix of various zelda songs on the web,and I'd like to include various songs from other games I liked throughout my gamer life.I can remix songs myself with fruity loops if needed.
anyway ALL of the game's content is intented to be and look 16-bit as if it was released on a SNES.

here's some sprites mockup:
Posted Image
link's sprites so far.
the equipement link is wearing will be visible on the player such as his type of sword,shield and tunic ...
three death animations are planned.
Posted Image
walking in 4 directions /without the sword and shield.need to make him a bit taller though when walking up or down.his left and right sprites are not done yet.
Posted Image
the levels desing so far.
I plan to include all typical areas included in these kind of games.upcoming is the caves,the beach and the ice cave.
I'd like link to meet some other video game heroes such as Pit in the cloud area,who would give you your bow or the wing boots who would make you float when falling down from a jump...

various sprites ...

a video I made to show the levels design so far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpdcNW3J6c4&list=UUun28axfFFrTSsX0w_EWZEQ&index=1&feature=plcp

I'll soon post a game.exe file when the curent level design will be implemented in the game engine.
anybody interested in helping with this project is welcome.

UPDATE:
I'm gradually learning and building.
many thing has been updated,especially sprite animations and the game's usual rules.enemies now gives exp. points and randomly drop an item whem killed.most of the hud and health,life,money or anything related to score is pretty much completed.
you can see the game in action here:

and here's the second demo:

the tal tal mountain remake for the waterfall/high mountain theme song was entirely remade by gamecrazy,thanks dude.

Looks great, but if your willing to put so much effort into a game why not make it a original game that way you can tell a
whole new story and possibly sell the game, but ether way it looks promising. Good Job and Good Luck-Mat

dude,you're exactly the guy I was expecting an answer from!LOL
I seen your engine and tried it a few weeks ago and that's what gave me the taste to get back on this project.As you say,your engine is pretty smooth.I'd say it's very solid.very good work there.I like the up and down shield blocking.that's some pretty good coding there.Your engine ROCKS!!
here's what I've got done so far,it's not much,but I'm adding stuff constantly.
http://www.mediafire.com/?72vzd91i67xczvo
I'd be more than happy to work with you on such a project.it could be lots of fun.

news update:
credits and first alpha engine added in the first post
gamecrazy781 is willing to create brand new original music for new areas! :smile:
now expanding all areas ''on paper'' if I may say so they look like ''levels''.even regular areas gotta be challenging and may even include bosses,such as clawgrip among small crabs in the beach area.I want to build the actual map before including restricted areas related to the need of an item and reasons for backtracking.

I could send you my .gmk file so you could merge your character coding and update stuff.do you mind if we get rid of the overhead view segments??
I aim at a platformer action-RPG type of game.
for the title I'd like the adventure of link 2 or the adventures of link : something ... I don't know ... lol

The funny thing is, I was going to make a game just like this, but I gave up due to graphical issues. It looks like it will be a great game by the way.

here some climb code from an old game of mine it goes in the step event

//CLIMB
if place_meeting(x,y,obj_ladderv){
vspeed=0;
gravity=0;
}
if place_meeting(x,y-16,obj_ladderv) and keyboard_check(vk_up){
y-=2;
}
if !place_meeting(x,y-16,obj_ladderv) and keyboard_check(vk_up){
y-=0;
}
if place_meeting(x,y,obj_ladderv) and keyboard_check(vk_down){
climbingv=true;
y+=2;
}
if !place_meeting(x,y-16,obj_ladderv) and keyboard_check(vk_down){
y-=0;
}
//EXIT CLIMB LEFT
if keyboard_check_pressed(vk_left){
if place_free(x-1,y) and place_meeting(x,y,obj_ladderv){
x-=16;
}
}
//EXIT CLIMB RIGHT
if keyboard_check_pressed(vk_right){
if place_free(x+1,y) and place_meeting(x,y,obj_ladderv){
x+=16;
}
}

then in the player object's collision with ladder code put

x=other.x;

that basically locks you to the centre of the ladder you could use a variable to check if you are climbing beforehand to allow it work more effectively. this is basically a megaman style ladder :thumbsup: any problems let me know ill be happy to help

thanks for the help nathaniel,I messed a bit with this code and sadly couldn'T get to get it to work properly.the right animation wouldn't play,the char is unable to climb up but can climb down below the floor.I'm still working around it and getting closer to get it working good.
I'm gradually learning and building.
many thing has been updated,especially sprite animations and the game's usual rules.enemies now gives exp. points and randomly drop an item whem killed.most of the hud and health,life,money or anything related to score is pretty much completed.
I have a hard time getting the player to die however,maybe poeple here can help me with this??
you can see the game in action here:

this will be updated in the first post.
the tal tal mountain remake for the waterfall/high mountain theme song was entirely remade by gamecrazy,thanks dude.
I'll try to keep you guys updated about this project's progress as much as I can.
here's some more concept sprite edits:
Posted Image
this is how link will start out in the game without his first costume.as a tribute to the wonderbot game and series,from wich this game is inspired,not so much graphically but spiritually.
Posted Image
climbing anim
Posted Image
this willl probably be the animation before being healed by a fairy if you have one in your bottle
Posted Image
this was intended at first as a step on a rock animation,though it looks more like a head butt or some king of special move,simon belmont style.
Posted Image
classic zelda 1 death animation.I'd like it if he would make a blood explosion mortal kombat style at the end.
some of those sprites are going to change since I now make a better shading to link's sprites.
feel free to comment,happy gaming!
